2023 Rangers/Astros thread of hate

I was reading the Astros thread earlier and the discussion of Dusty gave me flashbacks to the end of the Ron Washington era, with Maldonado playing the part of Michael Young.

Both guys are very successful managers who IMO did the hardest part of the job very well (creating a clubhouse culture) while pissing away one of the easiest duties (creating optimal lineups).

Anyways, I feel for my Astro brethren, because I remember how fucking maddening it was to repeatedly see Young in the lineup at DH, batting 2nd or 3rd with his 80 OPS+.

That said, I hope Dusty buries Diaz on the bench for the week and the Astros go 0-6.

Apparently, the Astros needed more paint:

Quote

9/15/23

HOUSTON — A silent series against baseball’s worst pitching staff may have prompted a change Astros players have long desired.
Workers spent Friday afternoon adding more green paint to the right side of the batter’s eye at Minute Maid Park, an Astros spokesperson confirmed to The Athletic.

The spokesperson cited “player feedback” as one of the reasons for the enhancement, which comes two days after Houston lost a series against the 100-loss Oakland A’s. The Astros scored two runs and recorded nine hits across their two losses. Only one of those hits fell for extra bases.

A photograph obtained by The Athletic on Friday showed green paint covering a part of the previously-red Budweiser bar that runs along the right-center field wall. In a statement released Friday night, the team said it is “adding green paint to the right side of the batter’s eye.”

Last week, multiple players voiced concerns about the batter’s eye to The Athletic on the condition of anonymity — and one cited the colors on the Budweiser bar as a particular distraction.

“It’s like night and day,” one player said of the difference in hitting at Minute Maid Park and on the road, where Houston has an American League-leading .800 OPS.

On-record comments this week from general manager Dana Brown and bench coach Joe Espada reinforced what has long been whispered both inside Houston’s clubhouse and around the league: hitters find it difficult to see the ball at Minute Maid Park. The Astros have a .732 OPS and a negative-8 run differential inside Minute Maid Park this season. Only 11 teams have a lower home OPS.

“Guys have talked to us about the batter’s eye but, at the end of the day, this team has been good with the same batter’s eye last year and the year before,” Brown told KBME 790 on Wednesday during his weekly appearance.

“I think there could be one or two tweaks that we could make that we talked about, but I don’t think it’s anything significant. I do think there’s a minor adjustment in the view with a left-handed pitcher that we may have talked about. All in all, this team has been successful without making any adjustments to the batter’s eye, so I’m not too worried about that.”

As Brown mentioned, Astros players have said left-handed pitchers are particularly difficult to see inside Minute Maid Park, though the team does boast an .802 OPS and .270 batting average against southpaws at home. This week, though, A’s left-handers Ken Waldichuk and JP Sears teamed to throw 12 innings of two-run ball in Oakland’s two victories against Houston.

The current batter’s eye has been in place since 2017, when the team removed Tal’s Hill in favor of an ivy batter’s eye with restaurants and bars nearby. This will be the second time since the renovation that the Astros have extended the batter’s eye farther right.

The latest extension is scheduled to be completed prior to the team’s home game on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles, according to a team spokesperson. The Astros are 38-37 at Minute Maid Park this season and are guaranteed to finish with their lowest home winning percentage since 2016 — the last time Houston did not make the postseason.

“The batter’s eye has been something that I’ve heard players talk about in the past. Also, visiting players when they come here to Houston, they have some difficult times seeing the ball here,” Espada told KBME on Monday.

“In the past it hasn’t been talked about as much. I think we need to look at our overall work here at home. We need to come in here with the same intensity, same goals … We need to press the gas pedal and continue to push forward. There’s been mention of (the batter’s eye) in the past, but I don’t think it’s the reason why our home record hasn’t been as good as our road record. We just need to continue to push forward.”

Blaming nothing but the batter’s eye for Houston’s poor home performance is short-sighted. Both teams stare at the same backdrop when batting. The team managed a .743 home OPS while looking at it last season and a .783 mark in 2021.

Houston has a 4.16 team ERA at Minute Maid Park this season — its highest in a 162-game season since 2019 — and five of the team’s nine extra-inning losses are at home.

Still, when presented with the team’s stark home and road splits, players brought up the batter’s eye. Asked on Monday whether players or coaches had brought concerns to the club’s higher-ups, Espada acknowledged it could be a possibility after the season is over.

“Maybe at the end of the year, maybe some of the players will think this is something we can explore and look at,” Espada said. “Maybe we could sit down and talk about it, but this is something that’s not going to get done in the next couple of weeks.”

Turns out it was a little ahead of schedule.

Max brought the Mets bad juju with him from Queens, NY and he has taken it away with him since he was injured. Rangers need to look to get rid of him in the offseason.

The Rangers have never won a World Series. One of the handful of baseball teams that haven't. That's factual and we get it. But the team is actively trying to change that by winning the AL West in 2023 and get to the playoffs. Is the pitching, both starting and bullpen, what you would think would be World Series winning material? No, not generally speaking, but as they say in poker, sometimes all you need is a chip and a chair. Crazier things have happened and you just never know.

So yes, Rangers haven't won anything in the past, they had a tragic outcome in 2011, but are looking to change that fact in the next 3-15 months.

When Astros fan talk trash about this on a thread of hate, it makes sense, though it doesn't really track when it's a retort to how the Astros are sucking right now and the Rangers are doing better, but whatever-- it's still a fact.

Here is another fact: the past Astros teams--and some current Astros on this team-- are the lowest forms of coward and scum that humans can be this side of being traitors. They are cheaters.

Traitors, horse thieves and cheaters used to be hung for a reason. It's such a vile and antisocial behavior to engage in because it threatens the very bonds and ties that hold society together in an uneasy dance of give and take and cooperation and competition.

Honesty, honor and integrity (and when all three are mixed together in the realm of competition, you get sportsmanship) aren't just lofty, swollen words that are meant to be ignored on corporate mission plaques in the board room. These ideals are what hold any social contract together, for the good confidence and security of the whole and many, and this holds true for the MLB and a group of franchises.

The Houston Astros is a cheating organization who cheated and are cheaters. Full stop.

That alone is so shameful and if the humans that make up the Houston organization and those around it were wired the right way, the cheating scandal (which is a fact) should be something that makes them ashamed for the rest of their entire, natural life.

Astros (and Astro fans) should hold their manhood cheap and when major leaguers gather, they should bow their heads a bit, not look at other major leaguers in the eyes, and forever be ashamed. The world series ring(s) of the cheaters are not celebratory trophies, but deeply painful reminders of what happens when man is at his lowest and sorriest moment; how pathetic men debased themselves to win at a game.

What is really bad are fans who attempt to sportswash the cheating and justify and rationalize it. We have seen it here and especially with @Rockethorn1978. You should be ashamed as you are betraying your poor morality and ethics, for us all to see.

But what is maybe the worst is that, when these charges of cheating and all the aforementioned that cheating brands you as are leveled, the retort and response is, "derp but you guys never won anything her her empty trophy cabinet img". It's not only not a sequitur for the reminder that you are a cheater, but it sort of implies the, "would rather be a cheater than have no honest trophies", which just shows that the current Houston Astros and Houston organization today are the same yellow-bellied, low-down, dirty, rotten, vile and immoral cads as they were then and that nothing has changed.

I rest my case.

Sadly that's the full on panic from anyone who works for, in or around the Astros.  They are flashing back to the astros historical attendance norm and realizing they are all fucked.  I have a buddy who is pretty high up in a contractor at minute maid and he said they are rolling out plans to slim down staffing if this year continues to go down the toilet.

If this team continues to implode and goes .300 over the remaining games this season they full well know opening day next year is 5,000 people playing hooky from work.  The Astros are about to go back where they belong, the sewer of baseball.

Bump.

I’m pulling for the rangers to do well. They have a steady fanbase that didn’t mostly jump ship on their team when they sucked, unlike houston fans. They also don’t have the snowflake petulance of astro fans, who get deeply offended when they find out someone doesn’t root for the Astros. You guys want everyone to like you and you play victim more than any fanbase in sports. So yeah if forced to choose Rangers is the easy way to go.

LMFAO at the Rangers having a steady fanbase that doesn't jump ship when they suck.  Look at the length of their team thread last season compared to this one.

And, no one is upset that you don't root for the Astros.  What people find weird is that you're so obnoxious about a team 1500 miles away.  The Yankees and all of the real Yankee fans don't even know you exist.
