how do you feel about the inclusion of a Palestinian flag (and the fact that only one of those flags' people are actually, right now, currently being herded into camps and starved to death?)

That’s the problem though. We can’t decipher the intended message. Which makes it a poor message.

I have some pretty simple rules— don’t walk around with Nazi slogans and imagery. Don’t say or walk around with signs that have the n-word or nooses. Don’t use homophobic slurs. There’s just not a way to “context” your way out of it.

At best—at best—you’re being deliberately edge-lordy.  That’s maybe one percent of all cases, most of the time it’s just people who want to flout norms and decency and are excited to do and seek negative attention. There’s not a single reason to ever give someone with a “Final Solution” sign the benefit of the doubt. It’s pretty pathetic to trip over yourself to do so, and expected since you believe Hamas is an “emancipatory force.”

Exactly.

Did you hear the joke about the two Chinamen and a rabbi that walk into a bar?

Yeah, I just did a cursory scroll.  It’s not most but it’s certainly not just the vilified majors represented on there.  Lots of professionals.  And as the old saying from Curly goes “and the semester ain’t over yet…”

A lot of those STEM professors have funny sounding names and don't meet the "okay, not okay" skin test so they might as well be a African Gender studies professor.

Analytical STEM folks understand the obvious. Humanities libtards, or at least a particular segment of them, are the ones that are inclined to find ways to cape for the military industrial complex under cover.

I havent been paying close attention, but is the president of the University of Texas at Austin not a progressive type?  He's in cahoots with the Abbott/Patrick/Paxton/MAGA cabal?

That seems incongruous?  Or at least very unexpected...

He is career business/finance academic and a late Gen X'er (the most conservative generational cohort in the country) who came of age during the Reagan revolution. There was the whole working with Dan Patrick on the Liberty Institute bit - though given it didn't go anywhere it seems like he was just humoring the politicians who wanted to get involved in a flavor of the month crusade.

I doubt he is some mouth breathing, election denying, texags dipshit and prior to this week has always seemed to handle himself professionally - not injecting politics into his job - at least from what I can tell as an unconnected observer. But simple demographic probability and his track record at UT suggest it's unlikely he is any kind of progressive.

Considering that track record includes pre-emptively calling in a company-scale deployment of state troopers to put down a protest because he didn't like their speech and was scared of something happening in CA and NY.... He's got some major fascist points on the board.

Oh also Stateman just dropped. Charges dropped for all 57 people arrested.

https://www.statesman.com/story/news/local/2024/04/26/ut-austin-pro-palestinian-protest-charges-dropped-against-all-57-people-arrested/73468467007/

All charges have been declined against the 57 people arrested in connection to the Wednesday pro-Palestinian protest at the University of Texas.

The Travis County attorney's office said all 57 arrests, which were all criminal trespassing charges, lacked probable cause.

County Attorney Delia Garza, whose office handles misdemeanor cases, told the American-Statesman on Thursday that her office agreed with defense lawyers that there were "deficiencies" with the probable cause arrest affidavits, which are the documents filled out by law enforcement to justify an arrest. At that time on Thursday, 46 of the 57 had charges declined.

You are right, I crossed early and late in my mind. Should have said early Gen X'er (i.e. came of age under Reagan as opposed to Bush I or Clinton). Though as a whole Gen X is still the most conservative generation out there, for all the shit boomers get.

Is that right? Cause it doesn't sound right. Us GenX think all this shit is fucked and wish that you would leave us alone and to our own devices as society did when we were growing up.

Funny, no reports of that one from the UT protests, so I guess we're just asking questions again? Let me guess, you're one of these people who think "Free Palestine" means "Go Hamas" because how dare anyone consider nuance.

Edit: And although not relevant to this discussion, I agree, that phrase is not helpful because too many bad actors in the Levant have used it in support of very bad things. Israel uses it too as justification for cleansing Gaza btw.

If we're just talking about the Texas protest, 100%.  But you reference anti-Semitism going back to 2016,  Now we're talking across the country, and it very much is being weaponized across campuses besides Texas.  You're talking about Nazi rallies.  That wasn't Austin.  And no, it's not "helpful" - it's talking about wiping an entire race of people off the face of the map.  This is about what happened in Austin, and they did nothing wrong, but against a backdrop of other campuses, what they are shouting seems problematic.  This isn't death to "America", this is targeted on a very specific ethnic and religious group.

I don't recognize anyone born before 1971 as Generation X, they are Boomers. Also, I don't recognize anything east of Bastrop as part of Texas.

Gen X is a 1972+ cohort, imo. 1980 is probably a bit too early to cut point the millennial cohort. I'd go like 1973-1983 for Gen X. Sorry, if you were born when Jimi, Jim, or Janis were alive you are not Gen X. If your formative childhood experience included AIDS hysteria, fall of the iron curtain, satanic panic, dial up modems, and dirt weed by the lb, you are Gen X.

I knew this chick in grad school who was Edging-worthy.   Oh wait, did you say edge-Lordy?   What the hell does that Even mean?  Is that a like a Cleveland steamer?

An edge lord is someone who is offensively cringe as fuck but thinks they're blowing minds. An edge lors is basically the default of a 4chan protestor. Edge-lord examples would be doing stuff like "ironically" wearing blackface or doing a nazi salute.

Our governor cares DEEPLY about anti-semitism....when it comes from a group not likely to support his regime.  But when it IS from a group likely to support his regime.....well, let's see how committed his regime is to not tolerating anti-semitism:

Texas GOP executive committee rejects proposed ban on associating with Nazi sympathizers and Holocaust deniers

Some members of the committee said such a ban, proposed two months after a prominent conservative activist was caught meeting with a famous white supremacist, might be a “slippery slope” or too vague.

Those are your boys, man.  They had a chance to take a stand.  And boy, did they take one.  "Anti-semitism will not be tolerated!" indeed.  Not tolerated.  But affiliated with, working in close association with, and working hand-in-hand because they share the same goals?  You betcha!

You care to revisit your stanning of hartzell's statement about how he was completely justified because they bagged a couple dozen folks that weren't officially affiliated with UT?

Did you see the AAS article upthread outlining how all 57 trespassing charges have been dropped? And that their probable cause affidavits were literally just copy/pasta?

It's crystal clear what happened on Wednesday. I don't understand your shared impulse to talk about everything except what happened on Wednesday at Texas.

No, several years later. Everyone I've known born in the late 60s and even in 70 had a different experience coming of age in the 80's vs the 90's. As previously mentioned, the Bush/Clinton post-cold war era was pretty different than the Reagan era.

JFC, no surprise your critical thinking skills are non existent. The VAST MAJORITY of college protests are about support for Palestinian people and criticism of the State of Israel's military actions. The VAST MAJORITY of chants and signs at these events are "Free Palestine" or the like. A few who go off the rails does not = "the protests are antisemitic."

The stuff Brisket is pointing out are protests, events, people in which the VAST MAJORITY are promoting nazism. The signs and chants and signs are "The Jews Will Not Replace Us."

Yeah, both anti-Semitic.
