Oh wow, another one

I'm a little surprised by this as an alum. Always heard that the AD and student/athletes really liked Bronco and I didn't see him stepping down. I'm not up to date on all the inside chatter (Twitter or whatever yall use lol) of college football but I'm interested to hear if there is any chatter at UVA already? I know it early.

I think he just wanted to stop. He’s 55 and has been earning a cool 3 mill or so at UVA each year. He’s set for life and so are his kids most likely (well, he is Mormon). He did OK but not great at UVA and so what else is over the horizon, he’s not getting called to coach Bama or USC, although he seemed at one point to have that trajectory. Why keep grinding if you don’t have to? I said it earlier on this thread, most college coaches don’t seem like they enjoy their job or life in general these days. There’s no Spurriers or Bobby Bowdens or Spike Dykes.

Thats my feeling about him steeping down too. He was an OK coach for us. I don't expect huge things, we aren't getting SEC talent in Charlottesville lol

So Fickell isn’t that fickle? Staying at Cincy?

UC is gonna be P5 - XII, XII, XII

Being #2 in Ohio is a good spot, Cincinnati isn't a bad town, and he should get a nice raise, soon, too. Not bad for a Midwestern, Catholic boy with young children.

He should get out while the gettin’s good if he really wants that path. People are discounting how much harder it will be in the Big XII, the overall level of competition is so much better. Replacing teams that you beat 9/10 times or 8/10 for teams you beat 7/10 or 6/10 add up to a LOT more losses really quick and your options start shrinking.

Clearly Manny can't even attempt to find a staff when he doesn't know if he'll be canned.  I'm sure everyone there is interviewing.  What a disaster for them.

Not at all true. A simple plane ride from the president and interim AD to show their support smooths it over just fine.

Leave to where?

OU is the only upgrade still on the board. Yeah, he should interview for that gig. Otherwise, I won't be surprised if he stays.

QB Adrian Martinez jumped in the portal today so maybe the Rattler stuff has legs. I feel like Martinez should coach now. He should be old enough.

It's funny you should mention that. When I saw his name on Twitter earlier I was like how long has that fucker been there

I'll bet he goes to Hawaii and surfs for a year then coaches high school or something. He seems like a good dude....albeit a weird one... and I kind of believe he was just burnt out. I know he's close with Dave rose...byus old basketball coach...and maybe he decided he was just done with the meat grinder. Good for him.

Most plausible thing I've seen so far is future AD.

I do think he was just burnt. I'm glad he recognized it before total flameout.

Quote

What was initially just a thought now has conversations behind it. According to sources, Texas and Gary Patterson have chatted about the former TCU head football coach joining Steve Sarkisian’s staff in some capacity, likely as a defensive analyst. One course close to Patterson said that he is not planning to make a “fast decision” and will weigh his options. For the last few years Patterson has told friends that whenever he left TCU he envisioned a scenario where he could join a coaching staff in this role, or potentially as a defensive coordinator. He would also like to be in a position to be a part of a team that won a national title. Texas’ current defensive coordinator is Pete Kwiatkowski, who has two years remaining on the three-year, $1.7 million contract he signed after he joined Sarkisian’s staff. According to sources, Patterson is kicking around a few different opportunities beyond just Texas. One potential scenario could have Patterson join Bob Stoops at Oklahoma if the now interim head coach of the Sooners decides to stay longer than just coaching the team through the bowl game. The Oklahoma job is technically vacant after Lincoln Riley left for USC, but the prevailing thought is if Stoops wants to come back for another go he would be welcome. Patterson and Stoops are friends, and a spot on that staff makes sense. It’s merely a question of what exactly Patterson wants to do professionally in 2022.  Texas makes sense for a variety of reasons. He is familiar with Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte; the two worked together for years before CDC left TCU for Austin in 2017. Patterson’s wife, Kelsey, is a Texas alum. The drive from his home in Fort Worth is only three hours to Austin. He’s made it clear Fort Worth is his home and he intends to keep it that way. By being an analyst, he would not have to recruit; the role of the analyst on coaching staffs have grown in the last 10 years. An “analyst” can interact with coaches, and the role is vaguely defined by the NCAA but they are not permitted to coach players. For a coach who wants to remain in the game but doesn’t want all of the headaches that come with being a head coach, or even a coordinator, it’s not a bad job. It could be an ideal fit for Patterson. Texas is not going to fire Sarkisian, and it’s doubtful he will dismiss his defensive coordinator even though the Longhorns had one of the worst defenses in 2021 FBS football. But Sarkisian has to do something. Hiring Patterson in any capacity will at the minimum be a good look. If he goes to Texas and helps Sarkisian turn around a team that finished 5-7 in 2021, it will only enhance a resume that doesn’t need much. Patterson may have not had good teams the past few seasons at TCU, but he is still regarded as one of the best defensive coaches the sport has ever seen. Several teams want Gary Patterson for that reason. Texas is one.

Might be an odd dynamic taking a backseat to DC. But he could help whip our players into shape like Dick Tommy in 2004. Or like Greg Robinson in 2013, he could slide into the DC role if Sark fires PK early in the season.

I would not be opposed to hiring that sweaty fat fuck.

Edit: And he could probably land a decent DC gig. Why go to Texas for something less?

Because he thought he was getting the job after Mack, and this is a way to word his way j into the Texas Boosters good graces for when Sark doesn’t work out.

Or to royally fuck us.

The article said "analysts" don't have to recruit and aren't allowed to interact with players. It's basically a consulting type gig, where Fatterson can analyze film and advise the defensive coaches on personnel and scheme. Sounds like a good deal for a semi-retired guy.

TFB is putting their confidence level for Venables at an 8. Think it gets announced Sunday afternoon. Lebby strongly hinted at a go for OC.

At this point, errbody be surprised if that doesn’t happen.  That’s a great hire combo, too.  You could easily make the case that they upgraded.

I would agree. Just getting rid of Bennie Wylie is a plus. Him tied to Lincoln’s hip is a blind spot for Lincoln.

Imo an advisory or analyst role gives him more flexibility and less accountability.
