No.  We've had a couple of teen meet ups that have turned violent, particularily in the neighborhood that a lot of Trump staffers live in (Navy Yard).   The criminal code is a fucking disaster (both too harsh and too lenient at the same time).  In all fairness, Biden's US Attorney for DC refused to bring anything to trial for most of his presidency, leading to a car jacking crisis, but that was dealt with in 2023.  Crime has been plummeting over the last 18 months.  Really is just the teen issue, which is mostly just minor property crime and, for the lack of a better word, malicious loitering.

The Big Balls thing happened at 4 AM. Nothing about it ads up at all. He was probably coming back from a local gay club, but nobody knows, but just like Dirty 6th....what the fuck were you doing out at 4 AM.

Fox News has been ginning up a group altercation in Cincinnati the last week or so, which I think is really marinating in Trump's mind.

Baltimore has been making some real progress.  They’ve expanded drunk tanks and lock up youths who are out past curfew or maliciously loitering for the night and won’t let them go unless someone signs them out.  Worth looking at something similar.

Single daughter lives in Mount Pleasant area, just a block from the main drag/farmers market (and a block from where a homeless person lives in a makeshift abode.)

I love her area but it does make my wife nervous - she's a mom and I'm an unobservant dad.

It's not Cathedral Heights where she used to live, but daughter  likes the energy and it's an adventure.

They are. Turn the national mall into a holding center. Anacostia will be walled off. Like parts of Warsaw were.

IT's funny, the local progressive movement has been touting Baltimore as a solution...right up until people pointed out that Baltimore deals with their teen problem using lock ups. I think DC is moving in that direction. Or was.

Kiddo just graduated from GW. Walked the city (yeah we talked about where not to go) but she was safe. Parts of DC suck. But this move is amount the Mall, etc. That is the start. Did you ever feel at risk in that area?

Baltimore has invested in some other stuff too, but the lockup made a difference.

There’s no city in the country that has more free/interesting shit available for people so the “nothing to do” shit falls flat.  These groups of kids get a thrill by being antisocial where others are being social.

Me, Mr. Sentencing Reform, doesn't mind using lockups on utes.  As long as it doesn't go down on their permanent record.

So, let's see....crime is lower than it's been in 30 years.

And the man who blamed Nancy Pelosi, and her alone, for not deploying the National Guard on January 6th to secure the Capitol in DC....is now deploying the National Guard unilaterally, something he has insisted for years he had no ability or authority to do.

And the people who voted for them don't just not mind the the constant lying and authoritarianism, they LIKE IT.

Guys, y'all do realize now that there are some situations you end up in that are so dire the only way out is to shoot your way out, right?  Pick up a history book or two.  Read, reach your own conclusions.

well you see, Big Balls got beat up, so we can't let that aggression stand.

I mostly agree with this. MPD has absolutely been cooking the books a bit, especially around crimes in Adams Morgan at night.

The leniency on “minor” crime and property damage is a problem.  It’s a well known sociological phenomenon that that sort of low-level disorder causes extreme dissatisfaction.

The inability of MPD to get a handle on the gang war between the two crews on 5th and 7th by the convention center is a problem, but that has been going on for at least the last 15 years.  Teen violence is really the cities bug-a-boo.  Until trump got here, there was always decent employment opportunities for most adult's.

DC doesn't have that bad of a homeless problem, relative to somewhere like California, or Austin.

In fairness, last year when I was visiting daughter in Mount Pleasant I was staying at a hotel in Adams Morgan.  We and a couple of her friends stayed out late (OKPB) and I decided to walk home.  On the way back, hit a road block, where the cops said someone had been shot on the road.  I took a detour off the main road, and I have to admit, I did feel a bit uneasy.  But it was typical "big city stay on this side of that street stuff.".

It's all in the context - if we have President who legitimately and for non-partisan purposes wanted to make DC the poster child for safe cities in the US, I could see them loaning resources so that every tourist who came in felt perfectly safe at all hours of the night.  But DC has lots of brown people.  We scared the non-citizens.  Let's work on the citizens now.

Yeah. the "gIvE tHeM tHiRd sPaCeS!" bullshit is exhausting and completely wrong DC has some of the best community center/public pool/parks/libraries in the entire country. If you are bored here, it's because you've actively chosen to be.

Troops marching down American city streets is enough for the media to fully move on. That's going to be great video for the networks.

The thing is, the tourist areas of DC are probably the safest places in the entire country.  DC itself is a relatively low crime city, but it is a city. The density of people means the crime density will appear higher, even if statistically on a per capita basis is relatively low.

It wouldn't matter if the murder rate were 20% higher and other crimes the same.

He's ordering federal forces to seize an American city. There is only one reason. He's testing how much power he has. So far, he's got all of it.

Crime has nothing more to do with this than rodent control.

Keep relying on some sort of political solution founded in Dem messaging, and Trump will hit no boundary. Acid wit and astute argument are not the appropriate instruments to stop a seizure by force.

If anybody gave a real shit about this, there would be a national strike and unbridled outrage. Leaving protest and resistance only in the hands of the persecuted is pathetic. A joyful, self-satisfied, one-time event like "No Kings" is just checking a box. Check here if you did at least something.

There are a lot of checkboxes between that and Check here if you successfully stopped tyranny.

I begin to despise our passivity as much or more than the fascists' malignance. I'm being too polite in this world. I must act more or hate myself.

There’s just ZERO national coordination regarding anything like a national strike. Without coordination it will fail before it even starts. Until that happens, we’re drifting without any guidance

Not to mention it’s about to be football season. Sadly, that will distract a huge part of this country for the next 6 months.

I do think COVID and the more lenient fed work from home policies did a bit of a number. Tourist areas are fine but it was pretty stark how less foot traffic and legitimate business caused parts of downtown to get— not dicey exactly, but somewhat disorderly.

Along with teen lock-ups, Baltimore also mostly dropped its non-prosecution policies in combination with community efforts.  They focused on repeat offenders and anyone with weapons.

Study after study shows that a tiny minority of people account for a huge amount of crime, everything from violent crime to shoplifting. I don’t give a shit what age you are, if you’re past the third arrest it’s time for you to be ejected from society.

Something I have been struggling with is where to draw my red lines and how to react when they’re crossed.  Prior to Jan 6, I was not really that worried about how the Trump/MAGA movement would play out.  I considered it temporary and ineffectual, at least in the long term.  The Insurrection on January 6th 2021 was the first time I felt truly worried about how this was going to go.  But Biden took office and things seemed to settle down.  Trump’s re-election was yet another turning point for me, as it showed that the pendulum wasn’t really swinging back the way I thought it would and that the Trump/maga craziness wasn’t going away like I expected.

Now there are loads of things happening that I never could have imagined.  Masked men in unmarked cars kidnapping people off the streets.  Far right state governments gerrymandering at the behest of the president.  The president deploying federal troops to take over a city against the wishes of local leadership.

When do we decide enough is enough?  And what do we do when that line gets crossed?  I can’t believe this is where we are.  I know one clear red line for me would be Trump running for a 3rd term; I will NOT stand by and let that happen and would risk my life to prevent that from happening.  But Texas redistricting mid-decade for the sole purpose of handing Trump full control of congress for 2 more years also might be a red line.

Yeah. The high rent blight downtown is very real.

the small minority thing is so spot on. The carjacking crisis was basically 20-30 teens and young adults. They would release them after an arrest and they would often car jack somebody right outside the DC jail!

He’s talking about reclassifying marijuana to a schedule III drug. People are stupid and would eat this right up. It still doesn’t excuse being a pedophile. Or a rapist. Or a liar. Or a thief. Or a traitor.

I did a quick scan of some of the bigger news sites (not including Fox News because I knew they wouldn't have anything).  DId the old CTRL+F for 'Epstein' on 4x sites.  Got a mindblowing TWO hits.

President Donald Trump recently made his boldest claim yet in his longstanding promise to lower drug prices.

“You know, we’ve cut drug prices by 1,200, 1,300 and 1,400, 1,500%,” he told reporters on Sunday, noting the reductions will start over the next two to three months. “I don’t mean 50%. I mean 14- 1,500%.”

Trump has unveiled a number of moves aimed at cutting drug prices in recent months, but he has yet to move the needle on reducing costs – much less slashing them by 1,500%, which is mathematically impossible, experts say.

When you get a 1,500% discount, do you get paid for your prescriptions?

I had to fill a script last week for the same $5.26 it's always been. In a couple months I'll get that investment back at a 1,500% return. Can't wait!
