Saw it a few nights ago. It was...... goodish? Maybe I'm just not into vampire musicals? The first half of the film was really good. Then came the vampires and the songs. All of the songs. They were good songs too! But it was all a little much and felt kinda corny (especially the vampire white-devil jig scene. Huge eyeroll there). I was disappointed, but I know I had my hopes up too much. Like the idea. Didn't love the execution.

Finally saw it tonight with very little attention paid to the hype.  I enjoyed it.  I definitely loved the music, but I thought the (intentional?) low budget horror scenes were kinda silly.  Defintely worth the price of admission, though.

New Orleans has 100-year-old theater where Sinners was shown in 70 mm - one of five theaters in the country with that format.  It was mostly filmed in and around New Orleans, so they gave us that small gift.

A very interesting take on the vampire genre. Vampires, black folk, blues music and a great 1930s set.  I highly recommend it.

Do you feel you were discriminated against by the film?

No he just has shitty takes about a lot of things.

Imagine thinking there was no thread about this movie already

My son asked me to go to the movie with him because there are five theaters in the country showing it in 70 mm.  As far as I knew, it was a new release.    It is a rare day that I go to the movies, and absent sports I don’t watch much television/commercials

I salute you on your perspicacity regarding coming attractions.

Was very very good. Well acted, good cross genre movie.  Did slip a bit in the final battle, but liked the ending when he knew the Klan was coming.

I will say, as someone who LOVES musicals, I thought it might have been a bit too much of one in the middle.  Soundtrack was great though.

Better the 3rd time than the first. (Admittedly I have the AMC A-List and I struggle to find 12 times a month I want to see something at the theater).

Highly recommend the vinyl.

Don't have AMC where I am...what is that? Like a pass for 12 movies a month?  i LOVE movies and going to the theatre, but not sure even I could do that, lol

It’s actually 16 movies a month - they just changed it. I pay $24/month and can see up to 4 movies a week at any AMC theater. Additionally I can skip the concessions line and get discounts (small but they add up) on food. It’s a ridiculously good deal imo.

Only issue with me is finding movies I want to see. I live closest to the Clear Fork AMC in Fort Worth - which is a great theater A/V wise but they hate showing anything that’s not mainstream. I don’t even think they had Sinners opening week? Let’s have 12 screens showing Lilo and Stitch or whatever instead.

I mean that's a hell of a deal but not sure I could watch more than 6-8 movies a month(still good) and some month not even that many movies are worth watching.

Cinemark has a similar deal, not as good on the tickets($10 for a free ticket, and another extra one yearly) but you get like 25% off concessions, and coupons for even more.

When I went to see Sinners I spent a total of $3.  Got in for free, and ended up spending the whole $3 on a Medium Popcorn, Drink, and some reeces pieces.

Not bad for that.

I saw it today, I'd say I was slightly disappointed.  I don't regret seeing it, but I'd read this thread and heard way too much about how fucking awesome it was for it to live up to my expectations going in, I think.  It was beautifully set and shot, the musical aspects were fantastic, the acting was very good to great -- but overall the movie felt less than the sum of its parts to me.

Spoiler

I understand that it took blacks and whites from southeast America in the 30s and introduced vampires into the mix as a juxtaposition.  The "evil monsters" -- the vampires -- wanted to welcome the blacks, to integrate them into their family, while all the whites wanted to do was murder them for being black.  Which brings up an interesting question: who were the real monsters?  These supernatural bloodsucking vampires?  Or the ordinary white folk who couldn't see any humanity in a black person?

But all the vampire stuff felt pretty cliche, the whites were just an over-the-top stereotype, and how it was all stitched together felt pretty disjointed to me -- especially the ending massacre.  So as a whole, it fell flat to me.  I thought 28 days later did a better job of using a horror film to make the point that humans can be more monstrous than monsters.

I would have liked it more if the climax would have required the twin brothers being forced to choose a path, and with them choosing separate paths.   One chooses to go vampire and one chooses to stay human.  Epilogue first shows the one who stayed human living oppressed as a black man in the south during the Jim Crow era, then it shows the one who went vampire living a life of relative equality and freedom in this integrated vampire family where the color of your skin doesn't matter.
