Probably anything.

The monetization of personal data has been a known problem for decades and America has sat around with their thumbs up their ass the whole time.

Congress has never considered it a serious problem so this shit will continue unabated.

Congress considered it. And then the tech lobby said here’s some bags of money to forget about it.

you aren’t kidding about people not considering loss of privacy for money. A ton of my friends are big privacy from government hawks, but then have Alexa’s and Google speakers all over the house listening 24/7.

Mothers Day Lol GIF by reactionseditor

Meta AI is designed in such a way that causes boomers to publicly post their AI prompts and questions.

PSA: Get Your Parents Off the Meta AI App Right Now

Wild things are happening on Meta’s AI app.

The feed is almost entirely boomers who seem to have no idea their conversations with the chatbot are posted publicly.

They get pretty personal (see second pic, which I anonymized). pic.twitter.com/0Hoff1psPU

There were a lot of tweaks when Meta crossed over from the Meta View app to the Meta AI app back in late April, and it seems not all of them have been registered by the people using it. Arguably one of the biggest shifts, as you can see from the tweet above, is the addition of a “Discover” feed, which in this case means that you can see publicly what kinds of prompts people are funneling into Meta’s ChatGPT competitor. That might be fine if those people knew that what they were asking Meta AI would be displayed in a public feed that’s prominently featured in the app, but based on the prompts highlighted by one tech investor, Justine Moore, on X, it doesn’t really look like people do know that, and it’s bad, folks. Very bad.

I spent an hour browsing the app, and saw:
-Medical and tax records
-Private details on court cases
-Draft apology letters for crimes
-Home addresses
-Confessions of affairs
…and much more!

Not going to post any of those – but here’s my favorite so far pic.twitter.com/9KqGeLB5UN

As Moore notes, users are throwing all sorts of prompts into Meta AI without knowing that they’re being displayed publicly, including sensitive medical and tax documents, addresses, and deeply personal information—including, but not limited to—confessions of affairs, crimes, and court cases. The list, unfortunately, goes on. I took a short stroll through the Meta AI app for myself just to verify that this was seemingly still happening as of writing this post, and I regret to inform you all that the pain train seems to be rolling onward. In my exploration of the app, I found seemingly confidential prompts addressing doubts/issues with significant others, including one woman questioning whether her male partner is truly a feminist. I also uncovered a self-identified 66-year-old man asking where he can find women who are interested in “older men,” and just a few hours later, inquiring about transgender women in Thailand.

I can’t say for sure, but I am going to guess that neither of these prompts was meant for public consumption. I mean, hey, different strokes for different folks, but typically when I’m seeking dating advice or having doubts about my relationship, I prefer it to be between me and a therapist or close friend. Gizmodo has reached out to Meta about the issue, and a spokesperson stressed that posts are only shared when users tap the “share” button at the top-right corner of the Meta AI interface after asking the chatbot a question. There’s also a “post” button to send the exchange to Discover. When asked why it thinks so many users may have mistakenly posted what they intended to be private queries, a Meta spokesperson did not respond.

so I only heard about this book because Zuck sued to get it taken off the market, so thanks Streisand effect.

What a great book, really enjoyed reading it. Zuck is an even bigger piece of shit than I thought. From telling heads of state that he doesn’t meet before noon, to trying to shove internet.org down poor countries throats so Facebook can get more users and most of all completely casting all morality aside if it means more users he is 100% shitbag. He is also one of the most self centered unaware dorks I have ever heard about.

I said this was my next in list, but it ended up taking me a little longer to finish it because I put it down for a month or so. But i just finished it.

100% agreement with this review. I knew Zuck is 100% a piece of shit, I just didn't realize how big of a piece of shit that resulted in. And how little the guy can read a room is unbelievable. So damn unaware it's unbelievable (except I can believe it). Not to mention his company and how shitty they are.

I won't disagree with the Swisher review - much of the fluff shock pieces can be called into question. But the facts that she does pull out of there are really good deals - China, Myanmar, the brush with the Facebook Files, Internet.org, etc - really great revealing stuff. But the soft piece leave the book open to critique.

Anyway, Great read - highly recommended.

This is the segment from back in March that I mentioned - good stuff

But I'm really bumping this thread because Zuck put out an AI manifesto.

You can find it here - https://www.meta.com/superintelligence/?srsltid=AfmBOop5BoRERP2kcCDRh682D0o-FxSKArqt2F0VOcYwSAQvSU6zUlVj

But I posted it here because I went to that shitty site, so you don't have to:

Personal Superintelligence

Over the last few months we have begun to see glimpses of our AI systems improving themselves. The improvement is slow for now, but undeniable. Developing superintelligence is now in sight.

It seems clear that in the coming years, AI will improve all our existing systems and enable the creation and discovery of new things that aren't imaginable today. But it is an open question what we will direct superintelligence towards.

In some ways this will be a new era for humanity, but in others it's just a continuation of historical trends. As recently as 200 years ago, 90% of people were farmers growing food to survive. Advances in technology have steadily freed much of humanity to focus less on subsistence and more on the pursuits we choose. At each step, people have used our newfound productivity to achieve more than was previously possible, pushing the frontiers of science and health, as well as spending more time on creativity, culture, relationships, and enjoying life.

I am extremely optimistic that superintelligence will help humanity accelerate our pace of progress. But perhaps even more important is that superintelligence has the potential to begin a new era of personal empowerment where people will have greater agency to improve the world in the directions they choose.

As profound as the abundance produced by AI may one day be, an even more meaningful impact on our lives will likely come from everyone having a personal superintelligence that helps you achieve your goals, create what you want to see in the world, experience any adventure, be a better friend to those you care about, and grow to become the person you aspire to be.

Meta's vision is to bring personal superintelligence to everyone. We believe in putting this power in people's hands to direct it towards what they value in their own lives.

This is distinct from others in the industry who believe superintelligence should be directed centrally towards automating all valuable work, and then humanity will live on a dole of its output. At Meta, we believe that people pursuing their individual aspirations is how we have always made progress expanding prosperity, science, health, and culture. This will be increasingly important in the future as well.

The intersection of technology and how people live is Meta's focus, and this will only become more important in the future.

If trends continue, then you'd expect people to spend less time in productivity software, and more time creating and connecting. Personal superintelligence that knows us deeply, understands our goals, and can help us achieve them will be by far the most useful. Personal devices like glasses that understand our context because they can see what we see, hear what we hear, and interact with us throughout the day will become our primary computing devices.

We believe the benefits of superintelligence should be shared with the world as broadly as possible. That said, superintelligence will raise novel safety concerns. We'll need to be rigorous about mitigating these risks and careful about what we choose to open source. Still, we believe that building a free society requires that we aim to empower people as much as possible.

The rest of this decade seems likely to be the decisive period for determining the path this technology will take, and whether superintelligence will be a tool for personal empowerment or a force focused on replacing large swaths of society.

Meta believes strongly in building personal superintelligence that empowers everyone. We have the resources and the expertise to build the massive infrastructure required, and the capability and will to deliver new technology to billions of people across our products. I'm excited to focus Meta's efforts towards building this future.
