Dwight Yoakam.  His voice might not be that good or unique, but apart from his own music, I think he brought new attention to the genre and to some classic elements of it.

Technically not country, but Alison Krauss.  She's way the fuck more country than many other "country artists."

Bluegrass isn't country?  Fairly serious question.

Also, relatedly, Hank Williams.

Not as old school as most of what has been proffered so far, but I always loved Martina at her peak, and this is her peak.  Less than 3 weeks after 9/11.  Much like the Tom Petty clip that has gone around, you can see she is seething, even if the song wasn't written to directly address the elephant in the room.  She was an absolutely monstrous singer in her prime.  And, I should note she clearly never relied on auto-tune.  Pull up some new live performances and you will hear what I mean.  We all get older, she chooses to do it with total integrity.

alright fuckstick-

Bluegrass music is a genre of American roots music that developed in the 1940s in the Appalachian region of the United States originally from Kentucky.[1] The genre derives its name from the band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys.[2] Bluegrass has roots in African American genres like blues and jazz and North European genres, such as Irish ballads and dance tunes. Unlike country, it is traditionally played exclusively on acoustic instruments such as the fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar and bass fiddle. [3] It was further developed by musicians who played with Monroe, including 5-string banjo player Earl Scruggs and guitarist Lester Flatt. Bill Monroe once described bluegrass music as, "It's a part of Methodist, Holiness and Baptist traditions. It's blues and jazz, and it has a high lonesome sound

Interesting that that credits it to the 40s.  A lot of American Music/Femmes from the 19th century pretty strongly resembles bluegrass, to me anyway.

Ken Burns country doc spent some time on that, and definitely there is one intersection. But bluegrass is a format with some rules and characteristics that are rigid and differ from country music. Old-time string music is a precursor to both.

anyways, I don’t care about leaning too modern so I’ll say it - Sturgill.

someone said Willie, right?

Well I would say my other voices would be Chris Stapleton, Charlie Rich and Vern Godsin. Not necessarily my favorite artists other than Stapleton, but voices.

I love Stapleton's voice.  I'll add a wild card, not technically perfect but incredibly iconic:  Lyle Lovett.

Not necessarily one of my favorites but I’d throw Vince Gill’s name in the ring for top voices.

My top 5 favorites are George, Alan, Stapleton, Whitley and Travis.

Yeah for sure Patsy.

there’s a weeping willow hanging over the pond near my house and I was trying to explain to my wife why I loved that tree so much, and it took me a second to realize that it was 1000% because Patsy and that song when I was a little kid.
