I was looking at the roster on Texaslonghorns.com

I had not seen a pic of our punter. He um... looks like a very experienced punter. Zero hate, just taken back.

Pretty sure he's one of those old ass Australian Rules football guys that they converted at their academy. He looks 35 here though. Damn.

I don't disagree. but we worried about this last year as well. There's definitely going to be attrition every year from here forward that hurts because the roster is simply loaded. I see risk on youth at WR and at TE, depth at QB, RB and in the secondary all being factors. That said, they have a process for managing it all, and money to help. The scouts they have covering the portal have also shown that they are top notch. Sarkisian got to learn under the roster retention master in Saban. Keep putting 10+ guys into the league every year and more players will wait their turn than they would virtually anywhere else.

I may be a chick but I'm not a sandy vagina. I was not worried last year and thought to the hand wringers --> insert michael keeton jack off gif. I'm also not worried this next year, you can't be so fucking loaded that you add from the portal, add from NSD and then have no attrition of "good" players. it's just not possible.

We should have a pipeline to the aussies and get a new one every 3-4 years.

If you could see how the sausage was being made in the last cycle, you'd have been plenty worried. It's just best to remember that multiple dudes will be putting a gun to the program's head in December, no matter much we all may like them as fans. Moore, Muhammad and Niblack all got way out over their skis in the last cycle and we could very well be looking at all 3 on other rosters.

We don't care and kind of laugh at Niblack's deal, but playing chicken with the other two luckily wound up in Texas' favor with Muhammad and broke some spirit with Moore. Neither would have been good losses.

Apparently they need at least 1 year to get used to the ball spinning clockwise or something so they don’t do stupid shit like drop it or shank it. Better get a new one every 2 years so we can break them in just in case.

fair enough. from the cheap seats it looks like we will win more than we lose and be net benefactors from this system with the money all out in the open and above the table. salary cap type shit - the stuff Mack Brown has been talking about - is what will worry me, because that means the bag game comes back to be a differentiator without even the faux police force (NCAA) to scare folks, unless a new armed governing body takes over and there are real penalties for cheating.

Don't tell that to @Helobious. He's going to fuck your take up, bro.

In truth, I think the last 2 Aussie punters that Texas had didn't work out. Pearson has become really good at SMU, if memory serves, but he never kicked at Texas. I can't remember the other dude's name but it was like Polish or something and he punted for us for a year, poorly. I don't know where he went from Austin, however.

I'm a bigger proponent of chickenhawking proven FBS punters into and through the portal. Worked with the Stanford dude and returns on the new guy are positive. But, apparently Banks disagrees, as we have some high schooler teed up to be here next season again.

I wouldn't worry about the bag game. It will always show up in the dumbest of recruitments even today, sure. That said, the monetary requirements have elevated to heights that make it largely irrelevant. LSU, Bama, Georgia, OU, Clemson, etc., these are all programs that are going to repeatedly struggle to hit their nut on the revshare side to begin with, so boosters will be tapped and fatigued. We're seeing that already. $800k used to win a recruiting cycle for Bama or LSU. That seems quaint now.

The bigger thing to worry about is when a program with plenty of money starts pushing large sums above the $20.5 revshare allotment into the payrolls and acting like that's not what they're doing. A limited number of programs could do that, but the most obvious one to go there and be fucktards about it sits 90 miles east of Austin.

Now that the team has finished six days of practice, there are a few questions we can answer with a little more definitiveness (based on both what we’ve seen and what we’ve heard).

Here’s one of the biggest ones I had going into camp:

What role will each of the portal transfers play for the team in 2025?

**

QB Matthew Caldwell - Caldwell is a little better than perhaps what the Texas personnel and coaching staff expected. Not from a talent standpoint, but from a leadership and professionalism one. He takes every snap seriously, and pays attention to the details. He is the odds-on favorite to be the team’s back-up heading into Columbus.

WR Emmett Mosley V - He was expected to be a starter when he was brought to Texas and that remains the expectation after six practices. With Ryan Wingo and Parker Livingstone, Mosley adds another good-sized receiver that is both faster and quicker than you might expect. The o/u for number of receptions is 45 this season IMO with 5 TDs. Note: he could be a key third-down receiver for Arch Manning.

TE Jack Endries - Unsurprisingly, six days into practice, Endries is running with the first unit. Endries has been perhaps more athletic, often able to leave his feet for catches, than first thought, while he may not be as explosive as or have the catch radius of a Gunnar Helm. Similar to Mosley, Endries will undoubtedly be a key piece of the offense. O/u on receptions is 57.

DT Maraad Watson - When I say that folks inside the building are extremely high on Watson, there are no two ways about it. Watson is seen as a real steal. He is expected to be a rotational starter and has opened eyes all camp long. He is a very good athlete for his size. I’m not sure Texas would trade the tandem of Watson and Alex January with any sophomore duo in the country.

DT Travis Shaw - The combo of Shaw and Watson is almost unheard of in the portal. Texas got an elite younger player in Watson and a more seasoned bigger player in Shaw. A former five star, this is Shaw’s contract year and he’s treating it as such. Texas thinks getting his knee scoped and holding him out of spring ball is just what the doctor ordered. He will be a rotational starter and has a chance to be a higher draft pick than one might think.

DT Cole Brevard - Run-stopper up the middle. Brevard has been a pleasant surprise, in large part because of his work ethic. He has not stopped working since he got to campus. Expect 25-35 snaps per game later in the year, perhaps less early in the September heat.

DT Hero Kanu - Kanu is a well-rounded player who lacks an elite aspect to his game. He’s not super big, and he’s not super quick. Yet he is solid and will likely see 15-25 snaps per game. The plan is to rotate the DTs heavily, especially early in the year when the heat can be so debilitating.

DT Lavon Johnson - Johnson has been a sneakily good player at times during camp. Held out early because of a sprained ankle, Johnson shows good ability against the run and surprising quickness at times. Somewhat similar to Kanu, we expect 15-20 snaps per game.

Edge/LB Brad Spence - Ask any player on the Texas roster who the most physically impressive player is and, despite his smaller overall size, you’re sure to get many of them who will say Spence. As one player said, “he’s rocked up.” Texas will be using him primarily as a pass rusher in 2025. And he could be a surprisingly huge asset in that regard. O/u on sacks is 8.

K Mason Shipley - Shipley, the Liberty Hill product and Texas State transfer, is very likely your starting kicker. I say likely only because final decisions usually aren’t made until there’s a final competition for the job during scrimmage situations. But there has been nothing from camp to lead anyone to believe he won’t win the job.

P Jack Bouwmeester - If I had to bet on one portal transfer earning an all-conference nod, it would be Bouwmeester. O/u 45 yards per punt.

**

The portal class was definitely underrated by national folks.

But if there is one piece that is lacking, it might be that true, older first-round level pick.

Someone like Matthew Golden last year or Adonai Mitchell the year before.

Travis Shaw has an outside chance to be that. Endries, though very good, is unlikely to be drafted that highly.

However, Texas certainly seems to have hit paydirt with Watson, Mosley and Spence among the younger players with multiple years of eligibility remaining.

And Bouwmeester could be a real difference maker as well

Just to piss in the Kool-Aid a little bit, I checked last year's fall practice thread and on August 5, 2024, Bobby predicted that Amari Niblack would be the highest drafted of that year's transfers and that he "looks like a major weapon" in camp.

Allen Iverson said it best, we're talkin' bout practice. I think the likelihood is that after the season we'll look back on a couple of these guys and say actually they didn't do shit for us. That's fine. I'd say we really only NEED Endries, 2-3 of the DTs, and the K/P to hit.

No Way Jose! BlowU has by far the best DT tandem in the country and it's not even close. I know for sure about that because I read it on gooner goop.

A few notes on future opponents this season.

Florida:

-They're having offensive line issues, particularly at Tackle, and they also have some OL injury issues with very little depth.

-They've had 5 WRs go down with injuries, and the Dallas Wilson injury could be season-ending. Gerry had called him the second best WR recruit in the last cycle behind DK Moore and the early reports at Florida confirmed that. The guy was showing out. Nothing is official as far as I know, but there's a lot of hand-wringing from everyone on their boards.

-Is Napier like Venables East or something? They beat their roster to shit heading into the season last year and had injury issues all year. They're back at it again now. How many Oklahoma and Man in the Ring drills is Sunbelt Billy pacing these poor bastards through each practice?

Regarding Matt Patricia's defense and their install progress at Ohio State, spoilered below is an update from Bucknuts:

Spoiler

** Install intel … Will Matt Patricia be able to make ’Nutters forget about Jim Knowles? Until, that is, Ohio State hosts Knowles and the Nits on Nov. 1?

Well, we have to see Patricia’s defense in action first. Not a bad first test in Texas, huh? We are told the next few weeks will go a long way towards determining how Patricia’s crew fares this season.

“Next week to 10 days gonna be huge for the rest of Patricia’s install,” our source said. “Guys are starting to get their legs under them. So now it’s adding exotic blitzes, being able to switch defensive looks mid snap … lots of NFL elements.

“Base foundation was installed in spring. Summer was lots of whiteboard work. Now it's time to put it all together for Texas. Gonna start seeing the fun stuff … special packages … like CJ [Hicks], Arvelle [Reese] and Sonny [Styles] coming off the edge but disguised.”

Can’t wait.

I'm mostly out of the loop on details as they've developed their ways of working internally. Sometimes during peak nonsense periods, you hear a lot. I know from one conversation recently that Tech is absolutely on the radar and one bit of intel folks have picked up is that they're basically forming like 100 LLCs that can each pay players $4899 for NIL as an apparatus for just avoiding the clearinghouse in general. Sounds absurd and complicated, but, hey, it's their problem to manage and sell to the roster/recruits.

good info, i don't spend a lot of time thinking about the financing of college football teams, in a parallel universe I might go all in and want to be on the team but the universe i'm in it's a passing interest and other things tickle my strategic finance itch. but it's good to roll down the bowling alley with bumpers and learn a bit more this morning. thanks.

This makes me happy. This is a common mistake for NFL guys. Wink Martindale learned it the hard way. Michigan fans were very down on him early and in particular his 3rd down defense. He would dial up NFL blitzes and some receiver would get lost in the secondary. These guys love to exotic and forget they have a talent advantage in 80-90% of their games. I hope Patricia falls into this trap

In past years, it was much more confusing with different sites having very different takes on practice reports. Sure, some may have been clickbait but before, it became a worry. This year it seems to be not enough positions for the players deserving playing time. And that’s one good problem to have. My NFL team is the chiefs and it’s amazing how similar the teams are. If we can just protect the QB, give him time and open up some holes in the running game, the sky is the limit. My only concern, minus the OL, is a weird one but it’s kind of been our bugaboo and that’s having a lead going into the 3rd/4th and not keeping the distance or extending it. I hope we can get back to some blowouts and limit the heart attacks we’ve all suffered the last 10+ years.

To build on this, we've kicked ass in the first half and then stalled out in the second. It has been this way since 2021. Remember when we would build up solid leads and then watch them slip away? We got better at that in 2022, but still had the same issue and still lost games because of it. KSU in 2022 and 2023 are a good example. Then more of the same in 2024, albeit less dramatic because our defense was able to hold the line and - credit where it's due - the offense would usually do just enough in the fourth quarter to keep us up.

I just do not understand what happens at half time. Is it a failure to adjust? Did Ewers injuries cool down and get sore, limiting him in the second half? Do we get comfortable and just play like shit with a lead? I can think of plenty of explanations but still none of them really make sense.

Here's an odd sentence. We added a walk-on RB, formerly a LB at Stanford.

Though the Texas Longhorns are at 85 scholarships with the elevation of Marshall Landwehr, they did make an addition at a key spot.

Stanford running back Carson Berger is listed on the Texas Longhorns’ 2025 online roster. Berger, a member of the class of 2023 out of The Woodlands (Texas) John Cooper, was part of the Cardinal’s 2023 squad. He was listed as a 6-foot-0, 216-pound linebacker by Stanford in 2023. He was not on their 2024 roster.

Texas lists Berger as a sophomore. His height and weight is 5-foot-11, 193 pounds. His bio only states “a first-year, walk-on running back who played the 2023 season at Stanford.“

He joins a room that features scholarship backs like CJ Baxter, Quintrevion Wisner, Christian Clark, Jerrick Gibson, Rickey Stewart Jr., and James Simon. Senior Colin Page is the only member of the walk-on corps in Chad Scott’s position group and is in his final year of eligibility.

Berger was a two-time SPC state champion in the 3A division that features schools like Houston Christian, Trinity Valley, Fort Worth Country Day, Oakridge, Greenhill, Cistercian, and St. Andrews. He was also the SPC linebacker of the year in 2022. Berger was selected to the Houston Chronicle’s 2022 All-Greater Houston private school team.

Walk-ons currently on the Texas roster include Carson Marshall, McCoy Bruce, Graham Gillespie, Ziky Umeozulu, Jackson Duffey, Isaiah Coleman, Tate Haver, Spencer Barnett, Brady Sarkisian, Eric Garza, Rick McBroom, Robert Sweeney, Brooks Kieschnick Jr., Gehrig Heil, Joe Tatum, Luke Dunham, Ridge Barker, Rett Andersen, Quinn Merritt, Remy Patson, Hamilton McMartin, Bryce Chambers, Hudson Powell, and Ty Boatright.

Texas continues its preseason training camp with a light practice on Friday. The Longhorns will have their first scrimmage of camp on Saturday. Stay tuned to Inside Texas for the latest details.

I sometimes wondered how much of it was the staff being in their heads about letting leads go and turtling. The late-3Q/4Q conservatism was maddening at times. But we also didn't have a lot of consistency on explosive plays, so they were probably trying to call to our strengths. Hoping the deep ball will be the panacea to a lot this year.

I always just figured the defense would adjust to our short game and we couldn’t make them pay with the deep ball. If the opposition had some success slowing our run game down we would just stall out in the second half. Not ragging on Quinn but his lack of legs to make a play to keep a drive going in the second half forced some punts we shouldn’t have had. Hoping arch can get a few first downs with legs to keep the train rolling in second halves this year. Wear em out baby.

I don't even think Arch needs to make that many plays with his legs. Assuming he isn't a nervous, happy footed self-sacking machine I think being able to hit the deep ball will force teams to lighten the box and running will be just fine.

Dad is a litigator who played football at Pomona and went to UT Law. Mom is a pediatric dentist in the Woodlands who went to dental school at Ole Miss and Georgia.

The sad thing is, I have no idea if this is true or if you just made it up, because it tracks either way.

3rd quarter offense and to a lesser degree D has been suboptimal for sure.
