Bobby update this morning on the OL:

The offensive line is always one of the last things we hear about following a scrimmage. It’s only natural since most folks are focused on the skill positions and following the ball.

But I was fortunate to text with someone yesterday.

First, the basics:

- There were no pre-snap penalties from 1s. There were from other groupings.

- The 1s on the OL committed just one penalty, a holding call.

- The D may have started out strong, but eventually the OL got some good, solid runs in the Red Zone portion in the second half of practice.

- The first unit remains, from left to right, Trevor Goosby, Neto Umeozulu, Cole Hutson, DJ Campbell and Brandon Baker.

- The results of the second and third units on the OL were a little more mixed, with multiple pre-snap infractions.

I get it but every other area of Texas' team has improved damn near exponentially since Sark's arrival.   But i think the oline has not followed suit.  It was easily the weak link in the position groips the last two years.  I was expecting Saban/Bama type of dominance. Flood needs to do better.

They put out that he dropped one pass

So are we going to get a CloseToJaggering Bingo card going for the opening game(s) of the year? Or just wager on some yardage and scoring totals? We could do straight cash, homey, or make CTJ just names his next kid Parker Alan Jackson _____________.

While Ryan Wingo, DeAndre Moore and Tre Wisner all had plays of more than 50 yards last season, the one player on the roster I’d look out for in this regard is Parker Livingstone

Not based on the draft. It was arguably the best pass blocking unit in the country last year. Feels like people watch the game and if there is a sack it is immediately the OLs fault.  Despite mountains of evidence and research that is not the case.

My head canon now is that the sports writers that cover Texas absolutely know CTJ hates Livingstone, so they keep mentioning him positively to slowly drain his sanity away, update by update, until the season opener.

While I mostly agree with your post, I don’t want the narrative to become that I hate Jaggy. He’s a longhorn, in any event.

Huh? Where did he say that? If so, he has us losing @OSU & @UF.

Bobby has said that the likely regular-season range of this team is 9-3 to 12-0, with 10-2 likely, but I haven't seen him say Texas is starting 3-2.

I’d say the same for run blocking. Or the you’ve got 5/6 to block 7.  The old toss for a 7 yard loss versus Ohio State.  The two safeties made the play.  We don’t have enough to block them.

Yes.  On the OTF morning show on youtube they did season predictions this week.  Losses to ohio st and florida.

We would be going into the OU game with wins over UTEP, San Jose St, and Sam Houston. This place would be ready to implode.

We're going to elite defense and murderball offense the competition like 2021-2022 Georgia and 2023 Michigan, although Arch gives a higher passing upside than those teams had

Shit. If this team starts 3-2, Satya might have to be institutionalized for repetitious, uncontrollable orgasms. Meanwhile, the remainder of the board will look like the Quinn Ewers thread.

It's going to be embarrassing when you have to go to a game with him wearing that McJaggerson jersey

Tyanthony Smith is going to be a star.  He showed playmaking ability as a true freshman who was playing light.  He’s now added good weight.  My brother in law coached him at Jasper during Smith’s first two years of high school.  He raves about Smith’s character, work ethic and ability.

I really liked his tape. Keeping in mind I know absolutely nothing about playing LB. However, he looked like one of those Patterson specials where you take a 3* and they sit on the bench for a while and then stroll casually onto to field as a junior playing like they were a 5*.

Every time Parker makes a catch, you have to take a shot. When Arch throws a fade to the back corner for Parker everyone you grab the whisky bottle and finish it.

Should have gone with a third WR in Ryan Williams over Nick Singleton

No Colin Simmons or Dylan Stewart seems off

Don't underestimate the willingness of coaches, especially Sark because he is a very smart guy, to use the questions about standouts to subtly manipulate the media and his players.  Butler may have been a standout, or he may have had a solid practice and Sark doesn't want a continued narrative that Butler drops passes, because a blogger felt like he needed to be critical and find something negative to balance a piece.

A lot of young players need a shout-out publicly from a coach.  For confidence or accountability... hey we see that guy, we have expectations for him, and the bar is set.

You aren’t just going to have your OL manhandle everyone in a 16 game season in the college game.

flood basically did that at bama. whether it’s the players he’s recruiting here, or even sark, he’s just not putting a dominant OL on the field and he’s had five years to do it.  we are definitely not the next bama.

It is not a coincidence that Texas struggled vs teams with aggressive downhill safeties. Game has evolved. That pre-snap looks can be decieving. Lot of teams bring safeties down hard. Tom Herman is still trying to figure that out looking at the Iowa State defensive film.

I'll be here to eat my crow if proven otherwise, but the last 3 years we've watched opposing defenses sit on everything within 10 of the LOS with no running/scrambling threat at the QB position. Prepare for a Sark offense that is fully operational.

Any list without Simmons is going to look silly at the end of the year.

It really makes me laugh that Stowers has developed into such a good player.

He also has us beating UGA and the axis of evil. I think we're going 12-0, but if we have to lose an SEC game I would rather it be Florida than any other team on our schedule.

Your beliefs are obviously opinions so not necessarily wrong, but I’ll provide some counterpoints.

I reference PFF quite often for several reasons.  It allows for measurement relative to peers.  Keep in mind that their overall pass blocking and run blocking grades include all persons not just the Oline.  And with that consideration, our TEs based on what I’ve noted in the past are not great relative to their peers.  Last year, Texas graded out number 2 in pass blocking, number 46 in run blocking.  In 2023, that was number 3 and 54, respectively.

For 2024, let’s take a look at the opposing Run Ds.  We played 3 of the top 5 then 4 of the top 10 graded Run Ds.  Then UGA twice at 12.  Then 3 others in the top 20.  Overall our blocking grade 4th in the SEC one spot behind Georgia.  Our SEC schedule may not have the toughest, but we had OSU, Michigan and a 2nd game versus UGA to counter that.

UGA graded 17th in pass blocking to go with 45th in run blocking. The Ohio State was 102nd and 41st.  Both teams had several Olinemen drafted.

Only the Texas pass coverage rated higher relative to its peers than pass protection.  I’d wager the Run D grade for respective DBs trails their pass coverage similar to the run blocking.

Also relatively speaking, our offenses job was more difficult than the defenses last year.  You see it in the numbers, relative OFEI, DFEI, and sheer number of draft picks.

You can certainly make an argument were a better pass blocking unit.  Every player out there has relative strengths and weaknesses so you do have to pick a preference as to your strength.

Those guys were pretty damn good.  And likely one of the best units in the country with some limitations/injuries in the skill positions behind them.

My eyes tell me that @DigglerontheHoof is right but man, do you make a compelling argument. It's interesting to see those numbers laid out. As an aside, do you find PFF reliable? I know they're good for the NFL, but I've always heard that their CFB analysis is somewhat superficial / lacking.

Old man cloud - I hate, I mean loathe, the dangling mouth guard trend.  We need more good laws, like outlawing that.

I understand not having your mouthguard in sometimes. Even most of the time. That shit gets annoying when you are winded.

But why does he have two mouthguards? Why is one attached to his mask and tangling while he actually has another in his mouth? Is the one on his facemask a backup? Or is it just to look cool?
