It's going to be embarrassing when you have to go to a game with him wearing that McJaggerson jersey

I have never worn a jersey to a sporting event, as a fan, in my life. Surely I did not actually make a bet about wearing a jersey if McJaggerson rips off a good season. Right? I’m seeing it mentioned enough now that I’m paranoid I had some sort of delusional break and blindly agreed to stuff while mentally unconscious.

That said, I will be wearing a “Grumpy” shirt as part of a themed trio at Magic Kingdom tomorrow, so I guess public humiliation via clothing is not impossible for me. I don’t think my wife posts here surreptitiously, though.

There's usually an empty suite next to ours. I'll just hang out there.

We're not losing to fucking Florida in the swamp. Even if Lagway is healthy, which is a big IF, they're still coached by sun-belt Billy. I don't see Lagway handling our pass rush well. At all. And it's not like our secondary is fucking weak. He hangs his hat on the deep ball, and he's great at it, but if even if he delivers some he's going to be fucking punished for it.

I understand not having your mouthguard in sometimes. Even most of the time. That shit gets annoying when you are winded.

But why does he have two mouthguards? Why is one attached to his mask and tangling while he actually has another in his mouth? Is the one on his facemask a backup? Or is it just to look cool?

Welcome to the party, pal.

Saban won a NC with Greg McElroy acting as a QB. National Championship level defenses can overcome a shitton of deficiencies.

By all readings, this may be a NC level defense. Arch is light years better than Greg Mc. I'm not worried.

Our media has always been this way. So have many of our fans. My dad (RIP) was a Texas alum, loved the Longhorns, and hated Longhorn fans for this very reason.

Bobby did pick us starting off 3-2, but he was the only one of the guys at OTF picking us to beat Georgia and then running the table after the Florida loss.

He is just buying into the inexperience more than most.  But he isn’t really doing his normal hand-wringing too much.

Can you explain why that would matter?

Most college offenses have the QB in shutgun or pistol on early downs and bolt RPOs onto their run games. It’s much easier for the QB because he’s not putting his back to the defense and the RPOs are typically easy defined reads; sort of guard rails for college QBs. The QB being in shotgun limits some of the potential run plays based on timing/geometry, although lining up in pistol mitigates some of that. Under center keeps every possible run on the table, and it allows the OL to be more aggressive blocking at the second level. The playaction is more effective because the defense has to honor the run more aggressively, and it’s more difficult to see the handoff

Some of the best offenses in the NFL by advanced metrics are under center on early downs for a reason, although there are also some great offenses that aren’t. There’s an interesting career trend where as high end QBs become more senior, they prefer to pull the strings from shotgun so they can keep eyes on the defense at all times, although that probably hurts the run game and offense as a whole

This is all even more effective when the defenses are sitting back in coverage to take away the easy button TD passes by alignment, and also if you have a mobile QB

Yeah yeah, I'm sure that 10 year old looked at you with watery, pleading eyes and said "Pappa, Pappa, will you please wear a 'Grumpy' dwarf shirt for my Snow White themed Magic Kingdom Birthday Party? It's all I want in the WORLD" and your three-sizes too small heart just burst and you said "Of course son, I will grant your VERY specific wish for a Magic Kingdom themed birthday party group, and not because it was totally my idea in the first place."

If B Wizzle 2145 says it, well take it to the bank. Also it's a coin flop that that guy's actual name is Brad or Braydyn Wizzle and 2145 is his 401k balance.

To be fair, I said Snow White/Magic Kingdown party. For all we know it's Avengers or Star Wars and CloseToJaggering and his Disney nostalgia chose to buck the trend and go with Grumpy.

One of my treasured Disney World memories was travelling to Florida as a kid. My parents' marriage was on the rocks, although I didn't know it at the time. I just knew they had epic fights all the time. Two people who demand to get their way 100% of the time and the marriage doesn't work out. Who woulda figured? Anyway, this was kind of a last gasp to see if they could make it work.

Narrator: They could not.

My father's whole identity was giving off this Darth Vader type energy everywhere he went. It wasn't that he scowled. It's like his whole energy was this "I'm going to suck out your soul" type of deal. That's not all of who he was, but that was his default.

So it's a family of four at the "happiest place on Earth" with Dad at the last place he'd ever want to be among people he felt were beneath him, with a wife who made him miserable, pretending to be the family man he never was, at the end of a miserable marriage with two kids in tow.

The person playing Happy the dwarf decides this is the guy he's going to charm. He (could've been she, I don't know) spent the next 10 minutes grabbing Dad's hands and dancing in circles with my sister, Mom and I laughing hysterically, and Dad sending laser beams of pure hatred out of his eyes at this shit head who had decided it was his personal mission to try to evoke a smile out of him.

Eventually Happy slinked off. Probably quit that day for all I know. PTSD related.

This sort of thing happened somewhat often, so my reaction when it started was to grab metaphorical popcorn and think, "well, this is a train wreck. Let's see what happens!"

That's awful and I'm sorry, but your explanation of how you reacted to the situation is hilarious. It reminds me of a buddy I had in college, whose parents split up when he was about 10. His dad was a huge asshole and an egomaniac. I met the man several times - he was fun, he liked to party, and he paid for everything, but he was a massive dickhead. As a 20 year old, he kicked me out of his house one time for wearing a Pink Floyd shirt. I wouldn't take it off so he said go sleep in your car. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway, my buddy told us that back when his parents were married, his mom and dad would have these massive fights. His mom was a really pleasant woman but she wasn't a pushover. The boys all idolized their dad but felt like they had to defend their mom. Anyway, they are driving to church and the dad is fired up about something. He's screaming at the mom, screaming at his sons, telling them how they make him miserable. Finally he tells his wife to pull the car over and that he's walking back to their house. As he's leaving he looks in the car and shouts "YOU'RE ALL ASSHOLES AND I CAN PROVE IT!"

If that happened to me at 10, I would be bawling. It would be a core memory. But my buddy was so used to it that he just looked at his mom and asked "How is he going to prove we're assholes?"

It's just amazing to me how unphased COD are about shit.

If Sark runs the Akers' 1-2-3-Punt predictable non-offense on the opening series, I'll be pissed.

For the young-uns on the board, this was Texas Coach Fred Akers' offense:

1st Down: Badly-blocked Run into the center of the line -- stuffed/TFL
2nd Down: Repeat of the Badly-blocked Run into the center of the line -- stuffed/TFL
3rd Down: QB does a 7-step drop to setup to pass, gets sacked/crunched by a jailbreak defensive blitz
4th Down: Punt

Yeah, that wasn't exactly our dynamic. For one thing, my Mom eats men for breakfast. She has a beauty queen sort of charm about her, a twinkle in her eye, but she gets energy from destroying people. She just managed to destroy my niece (her granddaughter) this morning. It will be the wind beneath her wings all day long. Her problem was always being attracted to alpha males and then crushing their souls. Finally late in life she married a beta that became her favorite puppy to kick, and that worked out a lot better.

And my Dad was awesome. Hilarious. Erudite. Took over pretty much any room he was in by his sheer presence. When the world wide web came about we started posting on the GoBig12. It was hilarious watching Dad become this larger than life internet personality. Not because it was some kind of surprise, but because that's how it always went.

I wasn't a Disney kid, I was much happier just going to the beach or the mountains, but my little brother wanted to go to Disneyland so we went once. It was fun, there wasn't any family drama, and I don't have any keen desire to go back. Drinking around the world at Epcot sounds fun if I have the deep misfortune to be in Orlando for some reason.

Sounds like it was the Crucible for all y'all though.

How Will the 2025 Offense Stack Up vs. Sarkisian's Previous? (Wednesday)

Spoiler

How Will the 2025 Offense Stack Up vs. Sarkisian's Previous? (Wednesday)

Where Will the 2025 Offense Stack Up vs. Sark's Best?

Building on the conversation yesterday regarding the home run hitting ability of the 2025 offense, I wanted to dive deeper into the overall passing attack under Arch Manning and how it might compare vs. the best Sark offenses of the best.

For the most part, those offenses will include the four offenses at Texas, plus his two years at Alabama with Mac Jones and Tua Tagovailoa. For those who missed the conversation yesterday, give it a read before indulging further in your Wednesday morning hype reading.

***

The Deep Ball

All in all, the point of yesterday's article, but all in all the expected most improved aspect of the Texas offense in comparison to previous Texas offenses under Sarkisian.

% of Passes Thrown >20 Yards

  • 2019 – 15.5%
  • 2020 – 13.8%
  • 2021 – 16.3%
  • 2022 – 17.6%
  • 2023 – 11.9%
  • 2024 – 12.4%

For those wondering, the % of passes attempted at or behind the line of scrimmage sits anywhere from 24% – 28% among all years from 2019 to 2024.

Average Distance of Target

  • 2019 Tua — 8.7
  • 2020 Mac — 8.8
  • 2021 Thompson — 9.8
  • 2022 Ewers — 11.5
  • 2023 Ewers – 8.4
  • 2024 Ewers – 7.9

The largest outlier of the group here remains the 2022 season where my belief is Sarkisian continued to give the former 1.000, No. 1 QB in the country the benefit of the doubt with the deep shot attempts.

Still, the most consistent offenses under Sark, sit in that 8.0–9.0 range of average distance per target.

One thing I have to highlight is completion percent among the quarterbacks in each year.

Overall Completion Percentage + Completion Percentage >20 Yards

  • 2019 Tua — 71.4% ... 48.7%
  • 2020 Mac — 76.6% ... 58.9%
  • 2021 Thompson — 62.5% ... 32.6%
  • 2022 Ewers — 57.8% ... 30.8%
  • 2023 Ewers —  68.5% ... 34.0%
  • 2024 Ewers — 65.8% ... 38.2%

First and foremost, that Mac Jones 2020 season was completely absurd in terms of efficiency. Nearly a 60% completion percentage on passes beyond 20 yards downfield is outrageous, but considering he was throwing to the Heisman winner and two top-45 picks, it makes sense.

Going back to Sarkisian's time at USC in 2013-14, those numbers match up evenly with those of his two Alabama quarterbacks.

  • 2013 Cody Kessler – N/A
  • 2014 Cody Kessler – 69.3% ... 44.8%

***

Where Those Offenses Ranked Nationally

Obviously the biggest point of emphasis is putting points on the board if you are Steve Sarkisian. And while I have made this about the deep ball over the last 24 hours, the point of the matter is simple – it doesn't matter as long as points are scored.

Scoring Offense

  • 2019 Alabama — 2nd
  • 2020 Alabama — 2nd
  • 2021 Texas — 18th
  • 2022 Texas — 34th
  • 2023 Texas — 15th
  • 2024 Texas — 29th

Passing Offense

  • 2019 Alabama — 3rd  ... 342.2 YPG
  • 2020 Alabama — 3rd  ... 358.2 YPG
  • 2021 Texas — 72nd ... 225.4 YPG
  • 2022 Texas — 56th ... 241.4 YPG
  • 2023 Texas — 17th ... 289.1 YPG
  • 2024 Texas — 14th ... 278.8 YPG

Both Alabama offenses averaged north of 340.0 yards per game through the air. That's pretty ridiculous.

***

What Does The Mean for Arch Manning?

That is the overall question, right?

Is it fair to assume Texas will have a top-3 passing offense in year one under Arch Manning? Probably not. Could Arch average more than 300 yards per game in year one? Now that is something I could buy into.

If that is the case, then you can expect to see Texas with a top-10 scoring offense to pair up with what could be one of the nation's top defensive units. That is a championship winning ball club.

I don't think it is completely far-fetched to see a 67% completion percentage for Arch Manning in 2025. I have already gone on record with my expectation of a 4,000 yard season as well, which would be the first in Texas Football history.

If that is the case, that is exactly the offensive firepower desired with a defensive unit that already possesses an incredibly high floor.

Turn The Page, Fred.

It was a godsend switching from the wishbone to the I-formation in Earl Campbell's senior year. I can't believe the series of events that had to transpire to make that happen. Running Earl as the fullback in the wishbone was a crime against nature. No offense to Coach Royal.

But getting locked into that offense was hell on earth for the next 9 years. Then it didn't necessarily get better under McWilliams. The boosters pressured him to hire Lynn Amedee (huh, he recently died May 20) because Amedee ran an exciting offense at A&M with Kevin Murray at QB. Amedee's offense in 1991 is the worst one at Texas in my lifetime. When the boosters told McWilliams he had to go, he responded with, "I hired the guy you wanted me to hire."

Then the Mackovic years came. And while the offense was exciting, it wasn't a winning offense nor a winning head coach.

Just glad I got to live long enough to see the program where it is right now.

I gave a book report on The Stand in 5th grade. My teacher stopped me about a minute in to it.

More offensive firepower conjecture from Vogel. It's at least something to get us to 8/23.

Honestly, the ongoing Livingstone hype/resistance is doing a lot of work for me in terms of getting to 8/23. It’s a gift that keeps on giving right now and adds a really fun layer to the season regardless of how it plays out.

I mean, that's the purpose of it. CTJ is incredibly entertaining. He's leaned in to it because it makes the board dynamics fun. Good on him for doing so.

My eyes tell me that @DigglerontheHoof is right but man, do you make a compelling argument. It's interesting to see those numbers laid out. As an aside, do you find PFF reliable? I know they're good for the NFL, but I've always heard that their CFB analysis is somewhat superficial / lacking.

FYI, I like the 12-0 thought.  My biggest reservation is the difficulty getting up every week and a slip will occur somewhere along the line.

I do think PFF is reasonably reliable.  I’ve spent time trying to understand their approach and believe that to be reasonable. Their NFL work seems to be their bread and butter with a smaller pool of games so it’s likely better but would lean towards their CFB work as improving.  Their processes are very similar between the NFL and college.  It’s certainly not perfect but comparisons by position or stats should be pretty solid.  Within that, you cannot remove all the subjectivity.
