My biased view of the RB room:

Wisner - great after contact, great at cutbacks, pretty slow, reliable, good attitude. Solid contributor but not Ricky Williams, obviously.

Baxter - showed a few tiny flashes as a freshman but basically a non factor until there’s evidence he can not only get on the field, but also produce. I’m skeptical.

Gibson - the fumbling is slightly less of an issue than it was and there were a few tiny flashes at times, but also a lot of bury his head into the line and gain 1. I think he’s got something but he needs a fresh start I guess.

Simon - flashed several times but obviously still learning protections, etc.  I’d like to see him get more carries.

Clark - just meh. Average at everything.

Ricky Stewart - whispers of an issue there?

Thin RB room, yet again.

The staff has to figure out a solid #2 in this group for this year. I like Baxter, but its just hard to depend on him this year. Simon is leading the team in Yards/Rush, but he has 3 carries the last 2 games, so you cannot make any kind of judgement based on that. He looked vs UTEP and SHSU, but I would like to see it vs a P4 opponent. Might need to use this UK game to figure out/develop the #2 RB. Clark seems to have the best cutting ability of the group, but he tends to cut to nowhere. He has 2 carries the last 2 games. Wisner wore down last year. They need to find someone to help carry the load. I wouldnt mind seeing Wisner getting a light workload vs UK (assuming the score allows it). HE probably could use it after OU.

Yeah I was hoping for a Silas Bolden or Jayden Blue out of the portal this year, but nope, we got prayers that Baxter would be healthy and Mosley...

Thank God it seems like Moore and Wingo are finally starting to vibe with Arch and contributing. Can't just rely on the creatine caucasians Livingstone and Endries all the time.

Sark used a lot of 2 TE sets and seems to be a little more comfortable giving the rock to Washington as well. Still not really seeing where adding 2 TE is getting more guys in the box and opening up passing lanes though. Need to actually fully punish teams for playing a light box with those 2 TE sets or just go spread.

Maybe somehow Nibblet puts it together finally and we can use him on some Jayden Blue type plays.. Isn't he a RB/WR hybrid?

Texas had a great run so maybe a couple of 4*'s that are really 3 at best is probably expected. Certainly Roschon, Brooks and Wisner exceeded expectations and there should've been a special 6* for Bijan. But I have to say none of Baxter, Gibson, Clark looked like difference makers when I watched their video.

I wasn't counting any of Roschon, Brooks, or Bijan because they weren't recruited by this staff. This staff has taken 7 RBs out of HS since Sark got here.  Of those 7 guys, one is a hit (Wisner), 2 are already busts (Gibson, Stewart), 3 are incomplete due to injury/too early (Baxter, Clark, Simon), and it's debatable whether you consider Blue a hit or miss. He gave us good production his final year, but his overall production during his time here was very underwhelming for his ranking.

There's no doubt we've had terrible injury luck at RB. The staff was raving about both Baxter and Clark, but injuries haven't given us a chance to actually know how good they could've been, and it's possible neither guy will ever be the same after their injuries. Simon looks like he has good potential to be a hit, but only getting one clear hit in 4 years while taking 7 RBs, 4 of whom were very highly rated, is not good enough even with bad injury luck factored in.

Baxter was. Gibson was the 9th RB in the class and 117th overall, so not nearly the same tier as Baxter. Obviously still a bust/miss by the staff, which we've had way too many over the last few years at RB. I remember being fairly underwhelmed by Gibson being our RB1 in that class. His highlights were mostly running through truck-sized holes thanks to IMG's loaded roster. He reminded me of some of the Katy RBs we've seen over the years.

Gibson was 3, IIRC

So when does player development on offense come into question?  We have quite a few four star receivers who haven’t played either.   This isn’t on tom Herman anymore right?

Clark can cut on a dime, but like someone else pointed out, the dude cuts INTO trouble all the time. He needs to run with more power too. Hell, every RB in the room needs to run with more power.

Dont have to be Ricky/Earl, but generally falling forward when going down adds a yard to nearly every run. See Benson, Cedric

Baxter, yes. Gibson, no. Gibson was behind Taylor Tatum (#1, considered missing and possibly dead), Nate Frazier (#2, should have been #1. Is a baller), #3 Gibson.

Just to add insult to injury, Caden Durham was #6, Kedren Young #4 (TX kid at ND- zero fumbles), James Peoples #7 (TX kid at Ohio St - zero fumbles.

Choice fucked up hard.

My comment was just a general comment after a great run, but I agree Sark and co. haven't done to well at RB. No school has a great RB every year for an extended period in time. RB has certainly been one of the better positions since I've been watching Texas FB.

As I said, Baxter, Gibson and Clark would not have been at the top of my list. Simon may end up being the best since Bijan, but only slightly better than Wisner. I do believe Cooper can be a difference maker. He looks like the real deal.

Yes. Big time.

Here's  what we have:

Baxter - made of glass (not entirely his fault

Wisner - small (can't take 15-20 carries a game all season, he's not built for that with his frame)

Clark - frosh, learning the game, came back from Achilles tear, so far meh. Same class witg Gibson

James Simon - will be good, he's still learning to not run into his own blockers, but he's speedy af.

Stewart, Jr - no clue. Probably gone.

Yeah, I haven't been the biggest fan of our strategy of taking 2 HS running backs every year up to this point. It has clogged the room with unknowns/JAGs (of course, injuries have played a role as mentioned several times in the thread already).

I'm not completely against it some years if you can find guys with 2 different skillsets. Part of the issue we have right now is we don't have a Jaydon Blue or someone with a different skillset to complement the other RBs on the roster. We seem to have a bunch of guys in the room who all kind of offer the same thing.

I know this discussion is focused on RB, but it's hard to separate them from the offense as a whole where evaluations and development haven't been great lately. The defense is loaded and there are really good players coming off the bench. On offense... not so much. Livingstone is about the only guy exceeding expectations. I'd happily trade skill players with Florida, Bama, Ole Miss, and probably others.

I was always a bit puzzled by Choice's evals over some other guys. He seemed to value everything but speed and being a playmaker. Caden Durham was a guy that I was shocked they bypassed for Gibson, considering we were going so heavy on Collin Simmons from the same school.

Niblett is poor man's Blue, but with a great attitude. He is great if your OL is dominating and his speed becomes a huge asset. Outside of that fairytale, he is going to struggle. Texas has to find someone outside of Wisner that can fall forward and has the vision to find holes vs legit defenses.

Which I generally consider good, hard running.

Yep. I thought the tape was proving how very good of a runner he is. He has a quick ability at the moment of contact to slip between two tacklers and get a yard or two more falling forward. Cedric Benson was valuable in that way.

I like Baxter. He showed signs of being a good back as a freshmen. There was also a lot of "meh" in there also. To be honest, I am not sure what to make of Baxter. He is a very good football player. He blocks at a high level, has good hands, and by all reports has a great attitude. The issue is health. Even as freshmen it felt like he left half the games at some point for some kind of minor injury. I am not sure we have ever seen him at 100% (remember him leaving in the Rice game). No reason to write him off, but at the same time it is really hard to write his name with pen on the depth chart. Kind of view him as a call option for this season.

Maybe move Michael Terry into the RB room for the rest of the season??

He looked better at rb than wr in high school anyway.

Terry's been practicing at RB for the past week+ allegedly. He's getting reps with the better groups there now, apparently. Here's Bobby's thoughts for the day below. Of course he thinks the Kentucky game will be a slog. I've watched UK a couple of times and I don't get it. They look like a team that doesn't like its coach and Stoops looks like he isn't enjoying being there. So they're going to get up for this game? Okay.

Spoiler

What I mentioned in this column yesterday morning became public by yesterday afternoon.

Sophomore running back Jerrick Gibson has left the program.

Gibson’s role never quite took off at Texas. While some will point to his tendency to fumble, I think it’s actually more definitive than that.

Gibson just wasn’t as good as Tre Wisner and is not appreciatively more talented than Christian Clark or James Simon.

So when you add his propensity to fumble on top of it, Gibson just had no real advantage other than his size over the other runners. Size just isn’t enough to ever be a front-line guy at Texas.

Yet Gibson probably still harbors hope of a being a front-line guy somewhere, thus his decision to transfer.

We wish him nothing but the best of luck.

**

In the wake of Gibson’s departure, true freshman Michael Terry saw reps at RB yesterday.

I’m told Terry “looked natural” at the position. This could result in a full-time move for Terry as numbers at the position have dwindled.

**

CJ Baxter practiced some yesterday but was not full go.

Baxter had hoped to return this weekend against Kentucky.

I’d cautiously put his return at no better than 50-50.

We’ll see what Steve Sarkisian has to say later today when the SEC releases its initial injury report of the week.

**

This weekend, Texas faces a Kentucky offense that will try to mirror the success of Florida.

They have a big running back who is tough to tackle and a quarterback who can be streaky.

They’ll try to stay ahead of the chains and keep the Texas offense on the sideline, keeping the home crowd in the game, too.

The Kentucky defense plays hard and physical. The Texas offense will require a level of consistency and efficiency to be successful against the Wildcats.

Texas 20 - Kentucky 10

Terry is certainly intriguing at RB. Have to imagine his pass protection is weak but with his skill set you handle that in the short term by having him as a check down option instead of blocking help if he's in on any pass plays. Let's hope we play well enough to do a much better job using this next 3 game stretch to get talented guys looks instead of doing shit like trying to make Stroh happen.

We can argue about literally anything around here. Before we go using NFL draft picks as a measuring stick, I'd like to remind you that JaMarcus Russell was the first pick in the draft...

You can't ignore context. Golden was only at Texas for one season and ran a 4.29 40. He's was getting drafted no matter what. Same with AD Mitchell. Then you have guys like Banks and Worthy who were the best players at their position the day they stepped on campus. They could have played anywhere and done just as well. On the flip side, Cam Williams and Hayden Connor were late round fliers drafted on potential rather than production. Ewers would have been drafted higher had he left a year earlier. Helm, Brooks, and Christian Jones were probably the three biggest "successes" the last couple of years.

In any context it's hard to make an argument that a team with 14 offensive draft selections over two years, which also made the NCAA semifinals in those two years is missing evals and not developing players adequately.   Performance on the field and NFL Draft success are probably the best KPIs for both evaluation and development.  I don't want to die on any hills, but I feel pretty comfortable with that.

I understand the need to keep "culture" pointed the right direction, and I understand the likely greater Sarkian sensitivity to an alcohol-related incident, but punishing your team by sitting a player for something that happened six months ago seems short-sighted. I hope there were other reason(s) for leaving Stroh out there stumbling and bumbling around.

I just wonder if the culture issue was finally deemed taken care of or if it was a matter of realizing that either the OL got fixed and we let DWI-boy play or we might as well kiss our goals goodbye.

Anyway, it looks a hell of a lot better now.
