I mean, yeah it should be beyond obvious that going forward it’s likely that the SEC has 4 or 5 title contending type teams many/most years and the big 10 2 or 3. If the Domers are legit talent acquirers, which I see no reason to believe they aren’t that makes 6-9 teams every year right there that should feel like they have legit aspirations to a national title.

that leaves you needing 3-5 teams amongst the rest of D1 needing to be on an up roster cycle where they feel like “fuck it- our window is now” and you have a pretty solid 10 or 11 with a shot to win it all. Between Miami, FSU, Clemson, SMU, TCU, Tech, BYU and Pitt it feels like that’s more likely than not most years and you will have off seasons with 12-15 teams entering the portal cycle with money to burn and the idea of “why not us”.
it’s going to be Major League Baseball. The dodgers and Yankees are always going to be good and spend a lot, but in the last 10 or 15 years you’ve also had titles won by the nationals, Royals, Astros, Giants, Cardinals and Rangers. Most of those teams aren’t in competition every year but there’s enough out there that some will always be.
It’s not the dumbest take on this board in the last 2 or 3 weeks but it certainly isn’t well thought out or intelligent.

Major League Baseball is a terrible example, if you want to talk about not well thought out or intelligent. MLB  has two leagues and there are big/smart spenders spread across divisions of equal size where they can get to the playoffs to begin with. Which is pretty fucking important. There’s not a wildcard spot reserved for the Savanah Bananas (G5 equivalent) or an autobid for the best AAA team (ACC this year).

Turn this into two conferences with pods of equal size? Ok, I’ll buy the thesis.

Depends on who #10 is, is it Big 12 #2 or SEC #5? SEC #5 has an infinitely better shot to get hot and win than some Mormon 2 and 3 stars.

And yet, there’s a plenty good shot that BYU will be there. Or even just 3 SEC teams while four and five sit at home in favor of a ACC team with a gaudy record.

Well yes, because the system is flawed and doesnt properly weigh conference strengths. The truth is that no system will be perfect but with ND, a G5, and an ACC school bid stealing every year, it leaves the SEC at a disadvantage. The new changes will help address this going forward (9 game schedule for more conf balance, more autobids for the SEC and BIG 10, getting rid of conf championship games).

lol aren’t we debating whether 4 or 5 SEC teams get in? I think the SEC is fine.

Yes, that’s the argument. There may be 15 teams with the roster to win. Three of them will be outside the top 12. No use mentioning them. One will be replaced by a G5 team. And that means you need to hope that the remaining two must navigate the autobid and committee process and be in the right league at the right time; that is far from automatic and thus far some of the better ones will be left out. And even THEN these teams are still playing as dogs in a four game series.

And further to the silly MLB analogy, you cannot plug holes in a roster at the trade deadline or dip into the farm system for the playoffs. The injuries and deficiencies you own, and that’s often what derails even very good teams.

The SEC as a league is fine; individual teams for sure face a tougher row. Texas, OU, Oregon, and USC likely all looking much better for bids in the former conference format.
