KJ Lacey using up his redshirt this year putting him a year ahead of schedule in front of Bell isn't a bad thing.     Not so important that you would push him out there if he is not ready, but if he takes the 2nd team spot, all the better.

25- Arch - KJ takes over 2nd

26 - Arch with KJ the clear number 2  Bell red shirt

27 - Arch to NFL  - KJ starts with Bell 2nd

28 - KJ to NFL - Bell starter

What we do in 2029 after 4 straight Championships, i'm not sure.

I fully agree that for these teams and more specifically this season for these teams this is being over emphasized as critical. I'd be pretty shocked if both don't end up in the cfp and likely the semi-finals or in a semi-final match up.

That said, right now, broad strokes, its hard to argue that two teams are on a better trajectory. One could reasonably add Oregon and Georgia into the mix for the 4 best programs in the country currently. Given that reality, both teams lost similar amounts of talent to the NFL and both start new QBs. Plus it's a massive match-up of 1 vs 2 in the "first" weekend of the year. So which team can reload faster between the two best programs in the country has never, in my recollection, ever occurred the first game of the year. When you add the massive Arch question into the mix it's going to feel absolutely enormous, not only for the fans of the respective teams but for all lovers of college football. Just a few years ago losing 1 game could eliminate you from even competing for the national championship, and that reality echoes in the college football mind.

Ohio State will need to figure out what they want to do with NIL long term. Currently Bjork wants to hold the line with payroll costs, and that's simply not doable and still maintain a championship level team. They're getting outspent right now for the 2026 recruiting class in ways they weren't the last few years. They also got money whipped for Jim Knowles. Penn State shouldn't be able to do that to Ohio State for a lateral move. It's like if Pete Kwiatkowski got hired by another SEC school as their DC. We'd all be wondering wtf? I don't think that happens if Gene Smith were still the AD.

Bjork is extremely problematic for multiple reasons. How he/OSU handled the Portnoy issue was sloppy as fuck for example. I know it's  shocking a Surly poster doesn't like Bjork, but I'm really glad he's at OSU.

If Owens transfers and arch leaves early, we'll be looking at a QB room of a likely redshirt freshman, a true freshman and whomever we can coax out of the portal.  As much as I like the potential of lacey and bell, that is not an ideal QB situation for a title run IMO.

Had to double check that this wasn’t saltynash’s handle

I get that. He still got paid $3.1 million to take the job at Penn State. If he was so miserable it shouldn't have cost a $900k bump in salary to get him.

He's not entertaining offers if there's more zen in the staff room. But Ohio State didn't exactly try to golden handcuff him there, either.

Regardless of the reasons, there's an identifiable issue when your ace defensive coordinator leaves for an annual in conference opponent with a $900k bump in salary while the AD is demonstrably trying to cut costs around the athletic department. There are all kinds of narratives that are going to come out of that. To me it would behoove you not to believe every single one of them.

Again, if Pete Kwiatkowski left for...say...Georgia...I would have a serious problem with that. I realize that's not apples to apples, but if OU is the analog to Michigan, there's not a great analog for Penn State. A program that is very talented that we beat every year with a head coach who can't win the big game. All I know is if another SEC program hired him away I'd be really pissed and wonder what is going on in the program. Instead the borg that's the Ohio State fan base just shrugs it away and says we have NFL defensive master mind Matt Patricia. Profit!

He got more money leaving, yes but he was not money whipped to leave. The power struggle between him and Larry Johnson and how the defense should be called/played is what made him leave.

I'm sorry, but Jaggy McJaggerson is not going to be a priority this weekend. Run inside, run outside, jet sweeps, hit Wingo, Moore and Endries, win by 11 and leave town. They're going to play 21 and 12 personnel as much or more than 11. Who are you taking off of the field in order to keep McJaggerson out there? A better blocking TE? One of the talented RBs? "Don't throw it to that guy!"

My overall point remains that there are issues at Ohio State that were not handled at the AD level. They're not going away. If the same circumstances were to occur at Texas we would not react to it in the same way the Ohio State fan base has. It's one data point among a myriad of them. Bjork is making a series of odd moves as the AD this offseason. I question whether the Ohio State athletic department is in competent hands that will keep them on their current trajectory.

And that's still a huge bump in salary to depart a position that you're allegedly dead set to leave in any case. It's not just more money to leave. It's a 40% pay raise to move to another program.

Since Paul Brown got to OSU in 1941 (before winning our first NC the next season) OSU leads the country in winning percentage.  The main factor has simply been a long string of good coaches.  Since Woody arrived, the worst HC we've had was Earle Bruce and he's in the CFB HoF.  There are a lot of factors at play in maintaining that success - primarily being the only major program in a football-crazed state - but high among those factors is simple good luck.

13 hours ago, WhatTheBuck said:

You’re skipping over a fair bit of history there. Remember that period of time between Brown and Hayes when OSU was referred to as the “Graveyard of Coaches?” From Widdoes to Fesler, it wasn’t a exactly a who’s who of coaching acumen. Fesler’s bumbling of the Snow Bowl opened the door for Woody.

Earle Bruce was a better coach than John Cooper. Cooper was just a better recruiter. Cooper once said, “You gotta recruit players who can play better than you can coach.”(10/11/21 - If that date fell on a Monday then it was on the Buckeye Roundtable radio show). You might counter by saying recruiting is part of coaching and that’s true, it’s one of the most important parts. But Earle was a mentor to both Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer and all three of them have winning records against Michigan. Earle’s impact has arguably been a more crucial part of the ongoing success of the Buckeyes than Cooper’s. John Cooper’s biggest contribution to the program was to modernize the recruiting strategy. As an X’s and O’s coach he mostly delegated and he was questionable as a motivator, unquestionably a disaster when it came to the most important game of the regular season going 2-10-1 in The Game.

In my earlier post I didn’t mean to imply OSU wasn’t an elite program prior to Meyer. I was responding to a specific post about OSU the last several years.

I’m well aware of OSU’s long term success. As I’ve mentioned on other threads, I was born in Columbus in OSU University hospital, my dad was on the OSU faculty, and his handball playing partner for several years was Woody Hayes. At an early age I was a massive OSU fan.

Fortunately, I made it to Texas at a young age and successfully was re-programmed to root for the greatest college athletic programs in the country. An unfortunate byproduct of this was the development of a deep dislike for my former favorite team. I kept waiting for the OSU program to finally drop down to a lower level of success. I really thought post Meyer would be it.

How many more replies from BO&W where he ignores your points and keeps hammering home that the move was only about the coaching room rift will it take before you realize that you’ve been wrestling a pig in a muddy pig sty who is enjoying himself as you just get filthier and filthier? I’m setting the O/U at 5.5.

Yes, they aren't going to club it as far as I know. Technology has come quite a ways. They can now isolate it where he still has some mobility in the hand. Though I  don't know if Goosby's particular injury calls for that treatment.

Either way they're going to cast it up in a way he can play. Elite LT isn't missing a game of this magnitude with a finger injury. NFL scouts would question his toughness if he did.

Don't have to. I can already see and talk to your delusional, brain dead ass.

Columbus looks like is a shithole.

FIFY and my 12 year old daughter. We got diverted there a couple of years ago when Southwest melted down. After we gave up hope of catching a flight to literally anywhere else, we spent Christmas Eve at one of the airport hotels. It was 4 degrees and our coats were in our checked bags in some other state. She didn't have any presents the next morning, but Santa did leave some pop-tarts in her dirty socks. Needless to say, she's not a fan of Columbus or really anywhere even remotely close to Ohio.

Can someone explain to me why it’s the consensus belief that our run defense will be on par to the previous two seasons? Not doubting at all, just genuinely curious. Murphy, Sweat, Collins, and Broughton were all extremely disruptive. All were drafted relatively high. Do we think that our current room is of that quality, or is the idea we will manufacture that production through sheer depth/fresh bodies? I’ve watched tape of Cole and Travis. Cole is huge and has a great motor. Travis is twitched up and explosive, maybe not consistent due to injury. I don’t know what we have with January but he appears to be developing well. We lost Sorrell who was a rock in the run game, I think the belief here is that Ethan Burke will provide a similar presence. Do we think Simmons will play the run better than Trey Moore did? Hill & Lefau are demons in the gaps, I suspect that’ll remain the same. Norton & Lole were solid, one made an NFL practice squad and the others playing days appear to be over. I think the additions of Shaw, Brevard, and Kanu appear to be upgrades to the depth. I think we take a step back in the front line interior though. Just thinking out loud.

The fact that Sark went to the portal to replace the DTs seems to have a lot of people gruntled. I’ve been hearing that Watson might have been a huge get. But sure, we don’t really know.

Im still more confident in the D line than the O line.

I may be misremembering, but I don't think anyone really thought of Collins and Broughton as great run-stuffing guys heading into last year. They took the next step in their development and in Collins' instance, finally put everything together that he had flashed his whole career.

Like you said, I think the depth is much better this year and we have guys like Brevard who specialize in clogging up running games between the tackles.

Well this time last year if you told hte board Collins and Broughton were the starters, nobody would have expected a good run defense (especially in Broughton's case).  Brevard and Shaw can anchor better than either, I doubt they are as disruptive but good luck moving them. You expect Hill and Lefau to improve in the run game. Hill improved dramatically in this regard from Freshman to Soph year. Liked Makuba and he was not afraid to come down and make a tackle, but Williams and McDonald will match that and then some (much bigger players). McDonald was one of the surest tacklers on the team last year. That is the bullish case for the run defense.

The OLB/Edge responsibilities will be more experienced and deeper, that will help. The LBs are running 2 deep at starter level. We know that the safeties will play run responsibilities well. Baker did an excellent job with the interior last year. Hindsight is your position regarding Broughton and Collins. This time last year, hope was our strategy on both guys. Collins always had potential, but potential doesn't pay the rent. Broughton sucked until his JR year and then he flashed being potentially above replacement as a SR if we were lucky. And then no one knew shit about Norton or Lole and everyone was wringing their hands.

The 5 guys brought in at DT don't all have to hit. It sounds like they're all pushing for PT along with January though, so, yay! for us. How many preseasons and off seasons in a row do we need to bawl all over ourselves with worry about the DT room before we just trust that the staff knows what they're doing and, if they like what we have, we should as well? My number is 2. I am out of off seasons for that handwringing with this regime.

Regardless, we'll know whether our thinking is folly on the first drive of the game for OSU if Day is worth his salt, and I think he obviously is. They're going to run right at Simmons several times and make him, and the Texas staff, make absolutely sure that he's a 3 down Edge.

Just going to put this here because it surprised me. PFF run grades for the Edges last year:

Sorrell: 72.4

Burke: 57.6

Moore: 57.9

Simmons: 73.4

I would have never guess Simmons would have a better run grade than Sorrell. Even if you dont have 100% faith in PFF, it makes you think twice about how good Simmons was last year.

Lies! Damned Lies! And Statistics!

That grade for Simmons is illusory. He wasn't on the field in obvious running or potential running moments for most of the year. Day would be a buffoon to not make certain that a score like that is merited.

second we have too much PTSD around here, we are pretty much in a reload with equal talent at most positions (accounting for exceptions where the starter is a boss man but we have boss men popping up like fucking whack-a-moles all over this team)

Seriously - other teams that lost significant talent to the NFL are hyping up their lines and brand new QBs, but here? Oh no, we are doomed af.

By and large in 2023, outside of Bama, Williams was pretty heavily rotational which means he basically had to prepare as a starter.  He went down in the early second half of OU with 22 snaps.  He was probably working roughly half time there.  His reps have not been garbage time.

The positive for he and Baxter is that they got the taste of it then were able to sit back and observe.  Potentially a little better insight than not getting the game time feel.

I agree. Granted, we are ranked #1 preseason. It's not a super hot take.

I just want to see how good Arch is before I finish the pitcher of Kool-Aid. If he's say, the 6th or 7th best QB in the country then Texas ultimately has a good of a chance as anyone but may drop a game here or there or have to come from a lower seed in the CFP. If he's the BEST QB in the country I think America is in trouble.

It's always somewhat dependent on injuries and luck but Texas has the type of roster to weather guys missing games.

Technically, I didn't attack you in my post. I pointed out some direct actions you've taken multiple times today, and I asked you a question and suggested an alternative strategy of participating on this thread. Feeling attacked is your own personal reaction to what I said of your actions. I can't control your Shame. That being said...

I don't attack people who don't do or say stupid fucking shit. It's not a hard concept...for most.

If I did fuck myself, and rotate it, and came back here to let you know, would you even fucking read the post?
