It wasn’t garbage time. We had the ball on the 50 with a chance to tie on 3/5. Not a single garbage time snap in that game.

Somewhat agree. I think Arch will improve, and we'll win a lot of games. We should be able to ground/pound and lean on the defense against every team we play other than UGA and maybe UF and OU. Win 2 of those games and we're be right back in the SECGC. What happens from there is where I have concern; if the red zone/goal line issues don't get fixed (3rd year and still waiting), we will once again come up short.

All our issues are fixable. Baker is gonna get a thorough ass chewing by Flood. I don’t think Arch sucks. Our OLine will improve as the year progresses and WRs just went up against the best pass defense they’ll play all year.

This loss just means we have no more room to dick around. Win the SEC…point blank

I hate to lose, but I'm ready for the rest of this season.   We are going to fuck some shit up as the year goes on and I promise that we'll kick the crap out of OSU if we meet up with them at some point in the playoffs!

I hope our freshman WRs improve enough to get a lot more reps later in the season -- Texas needs more athleticism at WR.

I only have two concerns, but they are both big.

1) Can Sark create and execute an effective offensive game plan against a top ~5-8 team with a good coach?

2) Can Arch Manning quit looking like ass in three weeks?

The first is an issue we’ve all been aware of now for going on three seasons. The Arch concern today was a massive new shock.

I like Sark, I really do. My fear is he has a ceiling and we are seeing it. It's a similar ceiling that Mack had. He is a much better coach than Mack. I don't think we're going 0-5 against OU under him. But he has shortcomings that cost this team in games that matter. He is now what, 3-12 in top 10 matchups? We can never convert these high leverage games to our advantage outside of Alabama. It is worrisome that year after year the same problems creep in. He had all offseason to get ready for this game and the offense looked dreadfully behind last season. I do credit Ohio State for a great gameplan but we looked to break out constantly and never did. Run game was good. Passing was awful and unimaginative. No creativity. No balance. He didn't get to the TE until the 2nd half. He didn't motion much at all. He didn't run counters or misdirection. It was a vanilla offense that wasn't going to cut it against a team like Ohio State. I don't know what exactly the offensive game plan was other than don't make Arch f up and that didn't happen.

All of this.

Sark really needs to consider taking points. We didn’t get to see Shipley today but if he is an upgrade from Auburn, taking 3 points isn’t always the worst thing. Especially with a new Oline

I don't think the sky is falling. There is a month to improve before we play another competitive football game (if SJSU, UTEP, or Sam Houston frustrate Texas to any degree then just check out on the season). The defense appears to be as advertised and we have a weapon of a punter. It looks like we can run the ball to some degree. That sets a high floor. I think the majority of the schedule is just not going to be able to hang with Texas in the trenches. We don't need the passing game to carry the offense but today it wasn't a credible threat. Any defense worth a shit is going to make Texas run over heavy boxes or beat them throwing the ball going forward, though, and it's not at all clear to me Texas is going to be able to face that from the 4-5 capable defenses on the schedule and not take a couple more Ls. I came into the year thinking that 9-3 and on the CFB bubble was probably the floor for the team but that feels more like the ceiling now. That's not a 2010 grade meltdown or anything, but an adjustment of expectations based on the offensive deficiency to start the year.

And frankly, I can live with that if it looks like the offense is improving and we beat OU and aggy again. I've been consistent in thinking next year is the year.

We need to stop losing close games to good teams due to QB play, in our QB whisperer offense with generational 5 star QB talent.

Yeah, these are alarming. I'd never have criticized Arch Manning for having a weak arm or super sloppy mechanics but he was out there with, at times, the same dead feet and sidearmed throws that would get Ewers in trouble. He was as inaccurate as I've seen a Texas QB in a while (Ewers 2022 vs OSU or TCU come to mind), short on several throws (including his INT). He had some sail on him for good measure.

Arch displayed issues with timing or accuracy at the margins in the short and intermediate game last year. A throw like the terrible 3rd and 5 miss to Wingo comes to mind. That doesn't seem to have improved so I wouldn't count on it going forward. Clearly that didn't get fixed and if it didn't get fixed in a full offseason and camp it's probably going to linger as an issue throughout the season. I have to think he will be better mechanically and not as woefully inaccurate though, particularly with the underthrows.

The book is not yet written on Arch Manning and I think we can still more or less chalk today up to nerves/pressure, so I'm certainly not jumping to conclusions, but QB coaching is starting to be an eyebrow raiser between the lack of development from Ewers between years two and three (and really never making progress in the vertical passing game) and the stunningly terrible season debut from Arch.

Eh, sort of disagree here. I mean, obviously there is no Worthy, Mitchell, Golden, etc. I like the RB room. Endries played well. WR isn't what it's been but the primary issue in the passing game was the QB. Wingo is a freak athlete, Livingstone's TD is a really nice play, we know Moore is solid. Mosely will hopefully get healthy and the freshmen can come on with time. There's enough there if you've got the QB play and the running game. Today they were simply not given a chance to make plays.

Arch will get better. I still think he'll be a star eventually. The bigger question is how fast. It might not be fast enough for this season but the next 3 weeks of cupcakes helps. We'll see.

I still think anyone who thought he'd be elite in his first road game, against an elite OSU team, is on crack. Yeah this was worse than I expected but people need to remember how long it takes most elite QBs to get there. Think about how many starts it took for guys like VY, Burrow, Nix, to get good...

It’s laughably wrong how bad you have floor and ceiling confused. Laughably.
this team would ho 9-3 with case McCoy. At worst. Arch isn’t case McCoy.

The last time we saw Arch start a game, the ball barely touched the ground over about three quarters. And when it did it wasn't his fault.

And yeah it was MSU and not OSU, but he looked like a completely different guy.

I'll preface all of this with it was an early game in a hostile environment against a top 5 opponent who has an excellent shot of winning their conference and the national championship. That out of the way, the same issues we've had under Sark are still there. Offensive penalties specifically on the OL that hurt drives. Confounding red zone playcalling and execution that lead us to 0 points and take points off the board. Poor player execution when it matters.

I like Sark, I really do. My fear is he has a ceiling and we are seeing it. It's a similar ceiling that Mack had. He is a much better coach than Mack. Is our season over, of course not. It's just disappointing that we're not able to pull ahead in these matchups. And now we have 3 straight weeks of games that make absolutely no difference other than getting Arch and the younger guys more experience. We won't know the measure of this team until Florida because the next 3 opponents are cannon fodder. My fear is we've hit a ceiling with Sark and we're going to need another VY type, like Mack did, to push us forward into anything great. Maybe Arch is that guy. He wasn't today and frankly he may never be. We've seen loads of talent at QB walk through that door and amount to not much in the postseason. It's tiring to smash our heads against the ceiling yet again. I want to break through.  I want to win games like today. I want us to finally be the team everyone claims we're capable of. I'm just worried we're never getting that with Sark. He failed his team today. Now he needs to rebound and learn, yet again, for another stumble. Has he yet?

This is my fear. Sark is a great guy who’s very well liked and has some really good capabilities, but he just may not be smart enough or ruthless enough to get to the promised land. I hope he can.

This is easy to say in hindsight but I honestly believe the decisions to go for it were warranted in all but one instance - doing so at your own 35 or whatever on the first drive of the game, with a great punter, is kind of insane.

All the others I think going for it was the right call. The actual play calls, maybe a different story. But especially the 4th and goal, you rarely get a better deal than 7 points for 1 yard and there was absolutely no guarantee the Texas offense would get that kind of scoring opportunity again.

I'm not really a believer.

That's not to be interpreted as calling for his job or anything insane like that. He's executed a full gut rehab and raised the floor dramatically. Texas is a legit top 5 program in the sport right now. He deserves the opportunity to keep taking cracks at hardware for a decade-plus as far as I'm concerned, so long as the bottom doesn't fall out. I personally don't think he'll get there though. As great as a program builder as he's been he's a pretty mediocre game day football coach and winning a national championship means ripping off three or four straight against the best talent and coaching in CFB. He's way too inconsistent in these types of games for me to feel strongly that he can get that done.

But, again, he deserves the opportunity to prove me wrong for a long time. Sure did after we hired him originally.

Our ceiling is limited by Sark. If he isn’t going to figure out how to score in the red zone or learn to take the points in year five, he probably isn’t going to. Because of this our ceiling is losing to the best teams on the schedule.

What is quite worrying is how our QBs simply don’t improve in their footwork and mechanics year over year. Ewers was the same inefficient and inconsistent thrower in year 3 as in year 1 and Arch looks like has regressed in that matter thus far.

Yeah, there were other things going on. What we saw against UTSA and MSU was translatable. He was terrible today. My hope and expectation is that he'll get better. But it was still disappointing. I'm sure for him more than any of us. He's not going to be able to watch the film of that game and think, "if only my teammates had given a little more effort, we win that game!"

Agreed but every athlete has ups and downs and playing OSU at the shoe is a very different head space. Not ready to panic on him yet from one game regardless of how bad it was.
