I've met quite a few football HCs from corporate speaking engagements at national corporate events and other similar shit. Honestly, most of them had a strong air of true asshole. There was one who hung around WAY after his "allotted time" chatting with various groups of people for hours. It was Lou Holtz as much as I don't want to admit it. So.. being a dick seems like a prerequisite for the gig. He and Dick Butkus were the nicest NFL folks I personally ever met.

Yeah I've met quite a few as well and you're not wrong. I'd describe most of them as forceful personalities, direct, etc.

Yeah, that a much more apt description. Some air of underlying control issues too, but that all tracks logically for an HC, football or otherwise.

What do you think?

I have mixed feelings. Obviously he's a Red Raider and he was a fun player to watch, but I have a deep, personal dislike for him for a number of reasons. He can be an extremely unpleasant, downright nasty person behind the scenes, I've seen it with my own eyes, but that's not all that uncommon in the CFB coaching scene. It was also years ago so I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt on personal growth. I do think he's a smart, excellent coach that will do good things for you guys.

All in all, I think this is a very good hire. I'm curious to see how he will shape the staff and handle the NIL scene but he's young, adaptable, and smart so I suspect he will do pretty well in that respect.

It’s a great hire for a lot of reasons. He was going to have a lot of offers especially once the dominos started to fall and took our offer before the season even ended. Tells me we had a damn good pitch on nil etc. Arky fans wanted him bad and are pissed. His credentials speak for themselves. If the stuff you’re saying is true it was surely vetted and not anything that would be of concern as far as winning football games. Plenty of quotes from his peers praising the hire. He has players he can bring for an immediate turnaround. Nothings guaranteed but on paper it’s the absolute best we could hope for and I’m happy Chad Weiberg pulled it off.

I agree with you 100% I think. The personal shit doesn't matter, it's just been hard for me to root for him over the years because of it, but I try not to let personal shit color my evaluation of people's skills, and I think his skills as a coach and football IQ are top tier. He seems to be a good leader and well liked in the coaching sphere so I'm leaning towards he's had some personal growth over the years and the past is the past. I think he is a slam dunk hire considering his personal talent and what is available. I also think he turned down Arkansas for y'all which should feel like an immediate vibes win right off the bat.

Sounded like he was headed to Stanford.  CSU seems almost lateral.

More coaches should make this type of move. He has a better shot at the playoffs as the G5 rep at CSU than an ACC championship at Stanford. Same reason Mullen should stay at UNLV for a few more years.
