The difference is...Campbell has that record at Iowa State with lesser talent than his opponenets, Franklin had it at Penn State with more talent.

Counterpoint:

ISU 7
Ohio 10

But you don’t just waltz into Athens (OH) and walk away with a win.

PSU traded down and paid $9M to do so. No way anyone in their right minds pay $9M to hire a shittier coach. Matt Campbell wasn't even on PSU's radar because they didn't think they would have to settle for someone so low.

B10 coaches: Day, Lanning, Cignetti, Riley.

He's 5th if I'm being REALLY generous.

I cant find the post, but I called this a couple of months ago. Campbell is legitimately a good fit for that school, not sure why PSU fans are melting down about it.

Bc they are aggy as fuck

Yeah and Franklin was supposed to be awesome because he won at Vanderbilt.

Getting it done at a small school doesn't always translate to being able to run a major program.

If Pedo tires of Franklin, I could see Campbell to State College.

IMO he's been holding out for Ohio State or Notre Dame (he's from Ohio and his whole family is still there; he's also Catholic) but think he'd take Michigan or Penn State.  All the jobs he's turned down previously were in the south or on the west coast.

Franklin was 0-8 vs. ranked opponents at Vanderbilt. Was cited as a weakness when he was hired.

Conversely, Clark Lea has 5 wins against ranked opponents (he's 5-17 overall with many losses coming earlier in his tenure). He's 5-4 over the last two years against ranked opponents.

Yes it does. Everybody knows and claims that success at a small school leads to huge success at bigger schools WITHOUT FAIL!

I will give you that, but I also doubt that he goes 0fer against those top coaches over multiple seasons.

Campbell is a thin skinned little bitch (remember when he approached that heckler who was barely talking shit?) and he couldn’t even strike when the iron was hot with the Brock Purdy success. If waiting for the right moment to make a move is taking the Pedo State job nobody wants to touch, good for him.

Penn State did not go into this process expecting to end up with Matt Campbell and they certainly didn’t plan to burn an entire recruiting class, but given how many swings and misses they have made they could have done a lot worse.

This cycle has revealed a lot of information about where coveted jobs are and aren’t.

It blows my mind how dudes from Rutgers get great P5 jobs. Like Flood’s bench warmer 3rd string Rutgers QB Mike Bimonte who is teaching Arch everything he knows.

You might have missed the Charlie Strong hiring process.   Pretty sure he was not the first choice.

So are you making an argument for my case that PSU shit the bed with this hire?

I’m saying the situations are similar.  Neither was anywhere close to the top of the list and I can see Campbell flaming out and retiring a wealthy man in 3-4 years.

8 years?  For a guy with a 0.567 winning percentage?

Damn.  Fred Akers won 74% of his games but got canned.

I think a lot of Campbell’s success, and really all coaches in the portal era, hinge on how well they are able to instill their team’s character with the number of transfers he’ll have.

OSU, UGA, UT, ND, UM all have 5 or fewer transfers starting for them.

Ole Miss, Tech, Aggy, Indiana all have 13+ starters that are transfers.

How well can you get a team of mercenaries to buy-in when shit goes a little sideways? I expect a lot of the mercenary teams to wilt when the heat gets turned up. Last year’s playoff had all mercenary heavy teams lose before the semifinals. Maybe I’m reading too much into that.

ISU unsurprisingly has 4 starters that are transfers.

Because of how badly psu bungled the coaching search, they are going to have to buy a ton of players in the portal.

Is Heacock going with Campbell to PSU?  If not, does he want to coach DBs?

Maybe P-State keeps Knowles as DC ???

I would put Pat Fitzgerald, Fisch and even Ferentz above Campbell.

Ah yes, the classic “he was really our first choice all along for an eight figure position, but we sent the initial offer to the wrong email address and then completely gave up until we whiffed on 30 other candidates” excuse.
