One really shouldn't use the term "pocket awareness" and Quinn Ewers in the same paragraph, unless one declares Quinn's to be abysmal.

The Office Thank You GIF

Are we really rewriting history now on Ewers' pocket presence? For all the good things he did or was capable of doing, his awareness in the pocket was seemingly not among them.

For total newbs like Bob, when you're touching your antenna, as to move it around, reception generally improves because you become a large-area antenna yourself.  But if you're just moving it around randomly, when you let it go, reception goes to shit.

Not a problem.  I watch all Texas games standing about three feet from the screen, a growing ring of sweat from my armpits, so I can just hold the antennae the entire time.

There have been a few one trick pony offenses that have tripped up the Horns over the years Taysom Hill comes to mind, but for the most part Texas finds a way to not get embarrassed by those types of teams.
We have the athletes, we have defensive playmakers. Time to nut-up or shut-up! Someone has to want to step up and go take that spotlight. A lot of eyes will be on that testa di cazzo, from Vandy, hoping our Head Cornuto has given PK the green light to dial up whatever we needs to do.

Friday - Bobby

Big Notes:

  • "Taaffe has been practicing all week, but been in a green practice jersey. If he goes on Saturday, it’ll be two weeks earlier than the initial prognosis of his return at Georgia."
  • "Manning, meanwhile, is a day-to-day situation. The concussion he suffered at Mississippi State was considered slight. If there are any signs that Manning is unable to protect himself properly, then he won’t (and shouldn’t) play."

With Cole Hutson upgraded to probable, Texas should be healthy across the O-line for the Vandy game tomorrow.

The only question is, will Hutson’s return push out Connor Robertson who has started the past couple of games at center, or does Texas move Hutson to a spot at left guard and that in turn move out either Connor Stroh or Nick Brooks?

While Stroh and Brooks have given it their best shot, it seems like both have had their issues at guard to date. Perhaps it’d be smarter to get three seniors by class (Hutson, Robertson and DJ Campbell) on the interior. It might minimize some of the assignment busts we’ve seen this year.

**

Both Arch Manning and Michael Taaffe remain “questionable” for this game, according to the injury report Steve Sarkisian reported to the SEC yesterday.

Taaffe has been practicing all week, but been in a green practice jersey. If he goes on Saturday, it’ll be two weeks earlier than the initial prognosis of his return at Georgia.

Manning, meanwhile, is a day-to-day situation. The concussion he suffered at Mississippi State was considered slight.

It has allowed him to return to practice in line with the concussion protocol.

But there is no guarantee here. And there is no right answer either.

If he plays, it’ll be because he has been truly medically cleared AND Texas and his family both feel confident in his ability to play well while protecting himself accordingly.

I mention that last part - protecting himself - because one of the biggest issues for players returning quickly from concussions too soon is their potential lack of situational awareness that results in yet another concussion.

If there are any signs that Manning is unable to protect himself properly, then he won’t (and shouldn’t) play.

**

Vandy itself is a little beat up right now. While it doesn’t necessarily show on the injury report, quarterback Diego Pavia has unsurprisingly been feeling the violence of the SEC schedule.

As the focal point of the offense, he runs the ball a lot and those hits accumulate.

Make no mistake, he’ll be ready for the fight on Saturday. But like everyone, the number of hits and violence of the sport take their toll especially playing hard-hitting opponents week after week.

The Latest on Arch Manning (Friday 10:37 a.m.) - Vogel

"But things are trending in the right direction to seeing No. 16 behind center on Saturday barring a set back.

The Friday evening Availability Report will drop this evening around 7:10 p.m. I would expect a QUESTIONABLE or GAME-TIME DECISION designation for Manning. Texas is not fully in the clear, but right now, it's at an encouraging stage."

Latest Update on Arch Manning

***

Pete Nakos of On3 has reported that QB Arch Manning is a game-time decision for Saturday's contest vs. Vanderbilt.

I can confirm that report.

In a thread on Thursday, an OTF OG lofted out an estimation of 70% likeliness that Arch Manning plays. I think that number is in the ballpark, and perhaps even a couple of percentage points low based off of intel provided throughout the week.

Still, Manning must clear the protocol completely – that is what today is for.

Over the last two days, Manning has increased his participation in Texas' practice and preparations for Vanderbilt. Again, a full clearance must be given by the medical professionals and the Texas staff. But things are trending in the right direction to seeing No. 16 behind center on Saturday barring a set back.

The Friday evening Availability Report will drop this evening around 7:10 p.m. I would expect a QUESTIONABLE or GAME-TIME DECISION designation for Manning. Texas is not fully in the clear, but right now, it's at an encouraging stage.

I said it in the Caldwell thread and I'll say it again here. Head injuries are extremely serious and should be treated as such. I'm not in the Caldwell should replace Arch camp at all, but I do think Caldwell should start this game purely for the future mental health of 21 year old.

All that said, I think your assessment is accurate. Why reveal the starter until absolutely required. Leave as much doubt as possible..

I just hope given we are likely starting Caldwell, Sark goes with the conservative game plan our OL can actually execute. Or course, if he does, I anticipate Caldwell does well, and we will beat Vandy by 2 or more TDs. The fact that we altered the offense will, clearly, help folks understand that the QB hasn't been the issue this year. They will finally understand where the real issue lies. Because Surly posters are extremely reasonable.

Oh for fucks sake, you're still peddling this shit?

No, he hasn't been THE issue, almost no one with sense as said that.  Yet you're continuing to be blinded by your over the top Sark hate to think that it's JUST the playcalling and/or OL that's the issue. It's all of it, and you refuse to see and admit that it could even partially be blamed on poor QB play(which has been happening)

Like the rest of us are fucking blind when Arch, with a clean pocket, and plenty of time, clearly misses a wide open crosser, or a guy standing all alone with a defender not within 10 yards, and dirts the ball anyways..

All most of us that are reasonable, have said is that Arch hasn't played well for the most part, with flashes of brilliance in the MSU 2nd half and OU game.  Other than that he's been super inconsistent even taking the stupid coaching and bad OL play.

I know I personally have only asked for caldwell when Arch is flat missing on the simplest of throws, and think a normal college level QB could make those throws.  No I don't think he'd do it if the OL is falling apart...but when its' not, Arch was still missing guys way too much.  Failing to read the field, throwing too late, or flat missing.

You continue to act like we are crazy when the only one crazy is YOU thinking that poor little Arch is ONLY missing routine passes due to just the OL and coaching.

Someone should have it, but I see a 87.3 clean pocket grade from PFF on Arch Manning in a clean pocket post OSU. So cool post.

Sure?  And that's why you watch the fucking games.  I swear it's like we've not seen him missing throws he should make. It's not ONLY when the OL is shit you know.  Even when the pocket is bad he can, and should, still make SOME of those throws.

And the bad pocket doesn't excuse the late throws or not seeing the field right.

But sure, Arch has not been a problem at all.  His poor playing stretches are ONLY because of Sark.  You win.

Fucking PFF grades being used as proof in 2025...Jesus.  It's a good tool to use, but not perfect or exact.  You know this.

i do watch games and Manning has a habit of missing an easy one once a game. He also has a habit of making a few NFL plays. Yes, i quoted an unbiased source as proof. How completely insane of me to do that.  I never said it was all Sark, but I do appreciate your brand of illogic ranting to attempt to argue something.

bullshit

A bad pocket can lead to all those things for a rookie QB making his first real starts this season

He is under pressure 80-90% of his drop backs, and when not he still plays like he is.  He hasn't had the reps that allow him to learn to read the field and make better decisions because the majority of his season has been a broken pocket and pressure.

The easy throws and clean pockets are so few and far between the misses become more glaring.

A good offensive line would certainly help a young QB develop at a much better pace than one that can't even let plays develop

Caldwell Starts, Loses:  Fuck Sark.  Please leave for the NFL.  Too much of a pussy to play a healthy Manning because of Woke optics and it cost us the season.

Caldwell Starts, Wins:  Caldwell Should Starts! Sark is such a fucking moron.  We would clearly be a 1 loss top 5 team if he hadn't promised Manning the starting job and played the best available after OSU.

Manning Starts, gets re-injured:  Sark should be fired FOR CAUSE immediately for playing a clearly concussed player.  No buyout.  Get the lawyers on it.

Manning Starts, Loses:  Sark is a moron. Playing a clearly injured Manning cost us the season.   Please leave for the NFL.

Manning Starts, Wins:   Half of Surly finds 10 different things to bitch about and are miserable in victory regardless.  Half of Surly is convinced we don't lose another game until Fall 2027 (at the earliest).

No, apparently now we're using the behavior of a young QB who is pressured nearly down behind an offense without ANY consistent running attack in long developing pass plays as the standard for pocket awareness.

Some clean pocket grades

Ty Simpson 91.0, Behren Morton 88.8, Gunnar Stockton 88.1, Arch Manning 87.3

Noted draft bust Justin Field NFL career 86.2

Maybe the issue is not understanding the stat. Also, a key factor of QB play is getting rid of the ball, Manning is pressured more than anyone partially because our OL sucks but also partially because he holds the ball longer than most QBs.

Hat Creek Burger Company is calling the play for Texas fans this weekend with a game-day offer. If the Horns beat Vandy on Saturday, Nov. 1, Hat Creek will reward fans with a free Cheeseburger from 3–5 p.m. at all 26 locations statewide — no purchase necessary.

I tend to post a lot of sarcastic and troll comments that I mean no offense by, because I've never taken places like this very seriously. But that doesn't make it right, nor make it non-offensive. Truth is even though I know a lot of others don't take it very seriously either, some (not necessary any of you in particular) may, and I never know the effect it could have on one of them. Just recently my best friend growing up committed suicide. He battled schizophrenia and some of the seemingly most random insignificant things affected him more deeply than I ever imagined. I'd hate to ever unknowingly affect another person in such a way, even over the internet with people I'll probably never know personally.

I'm sure some will not accept this and will continue to think the lowest of me, which is fine. But I just wanted to do better and give a legit apology.

This is an insightful description of aberrant salience in schizophrenia. Thanks for sharing, and my condolences for your loss.
