Best Concert You've Been To?

The best show I've ever seen was Mike Keneally at a small club in Charleson, WV in 2001.  It was religious.

2nd best, and best of the "big" ones, was Pink Floyd at Texas Stadium in 1994.  Visually it's still the greatest thing I've ever seen.  It rained that night so the rain was only coming down through the hole in the roof.  When the lasers went through the raindrops, thousands of pyramids of rainbows refracted throughout the whole of Texas Stadium.  They never could've planned that, but it was brilliant.  The band was amazing...watching Gilmour play live is one of the highlights of my life.

I love Arc Angels, but I never got to see them in concert.  While I was at UT, I would go to see Doyle and Charlie whenever they were in town, but the closest I got to seeing Arc Angels was The Mighty Zor (the Arc Angels with Denny Freeman in place of Charlie).  Well, one night Zor were playing at Antone's and about half way through the concert, I looked up at the balcony area they had to the left of the stage and there was Charlie.  He finally came down for the encore and the place went crazy.  That was my favorite Austin music memory.

May 23, 2000 A Perfect Circle and NIN at Starplex. Was the release date of the first APC album, and The Fragile tour for NIN. First time to see both and was amazed by the NIN stage show.

David Gilmour at the Paramount Theater in Oakland is a close 2nd. Hearing Echoes live...fuck.

We used to go to a place in Houston back in the mid 70's called Liberty Hall on Chenevert St.  It was a small venue spot,  I guess maybe 200 people. Maybe more or less I'm not sure. They had great groups come through.  I saw Jerry Jeff,  Little Feat,  all kind of blues,  John Lee Hooker,  Lightning Hopkins,  Clifton Chenier and many more.

But to answer the question about best concert I've ever been to,  there was a song played locally on Houston radio called "Somebody's Shaking My Tree".  We had never heard of the group but the song was good so we went to the concert at Liberty Hall.

The group was ZZ Top.

None of of us could believe what we had just heard.

I know that's 2 best concerts I've been to,  but I've been going for a long time so I get more than one.

Was that with Beer for Dolphins? All I've heard from them is five songs of filler on one of my Zappa bootlegs but they sound pretty good.

My top five for different reasons.

1. Pink Floyd/Division Bell - Best music, best show. Period.

2. Dire Straits/On Every Street - Mark Knopfler is the best guitarist alive. Amazing music.

3. The Eagles/Hell Freezes Over - Music was awesome. Nostalgia overload.

4. Beastie Boys/Hello Nasty - Great music and great show. Entertaining as hell.

5. Porno For Pyros/Porno For Pyros - Funnest show I've ever been to. Perry was in peak form and all the strippers were pure eye candy.

Yeah, Beer for Dolphins is the name of his band.  Sometimes he's called it the "Mike Keneally Band", but usually it's BFD.  Think of it closer to "the Rocking Teenage Combo" rather than "the Mothers"...as in, not a specific band but whoever he's playing with at that particular show.  I'd highly recommend his stuff.  Much less cynical than Zappa.

That's where Springsteen played when he was first starting out. This is the "Greetings from Liberty Hall" recording, which KPFT did and broadcast the show live.

A December 1978 show recorded at the Summit was "officially" released last fall to benefit Hurricane relief. You can hear him dedicate It's Hard to be a Saint in the City "for all the folks from the Liberty Hall days."

Radiohead In Rainbows tour. Had tickets in the pit. Bands usually have those first few albums where they are young and hungry, and then a down while they get used to the life of excess, and then if you're lucky you get a later classic. To me that was In Rainbows for Radiohead. I regret not following them on a few more stops of that tour. They just seemed super tight as a band, the crowd was great, they all played about 20 different instruments, just a great show.

Holy shit I was at this show! The Empty Glass, right? A friend and I road-tripped with the band on this tour from Lexington, KY, to Kent, OH, then Charleston. I absolutely loved that lineup and have some great pictures from those shows.

Thanks for the links.

What a great place to see some really good music.

Best one ever is the last one I atteneded - Foo Fighters in Billings this past December.  Before that it was some "country-fest" at the Alamodome back in the early 90s headlined by George Strait. It had him, the fat Judd, Faith Hill, and a handful of others.

I only went to Liberty Hall once. It was the summer of '78 just before I left for Jester Dorm. I was getting into Progressive Jazz and went to see The Billy Cobham Band. We had great seats in the first row of the balcony directly in front of the stage and it was hot as hell.

Some hotshot named Eric Johnson opened and was incredible.

I sat about 100 feet from Stevie Wonder himself for the Songs in the Key of Life Tour at the Erwin Center about 3 years ago. The night before, he played Dallas. That was a downer of a show because just before he took the stage, his wife had to be rushed to the hospital. By the time he took stage in Austin, she was alright and he was in great spirits. Also saw Dave Chappelle the night before.

Lollapalooza in '92 featuring Lush, Pearl Jam, Jesus and Mary Chain, Soundgarden, Ice Cube, Ministry, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Ministry set was fucking otherworldly. '92 was a damn good time to see Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Ice Cube.

2004 at ACL Fest when I finally got to see the Pixies.

Oh that's killer!  Yup, Empty Glass.  I loved that lineup.  That was the only time I got to see Nick D'Virgilio drum for MK.  He's such a monster.  My first MK show was at SXSW back in March of 2001.  I'm a HUGE fan of Keneally's, glad to see someone else is too.

Pearl Jam at Irving Plaza, NYC, 2006.  Capacity 1000.

People ran straight to the front of the stage, no beers, no merch, just straight up there.  It was balls out intense and they security would try to pour water into our mouths as we were so damn packed in there and hot and sweaty.  They crushed it.

Others of note:

early Sigur Ros shows at Beacon Theater (Ágætis byrjun tour),

Radiohead opening for REM at Reunion Arena,

Broken Social Scene (You Forgot it in People tour),

any of the many Tool shows I've seen.

Slayer with Motorhead and Overkill, Atlanta Civic Center 1988. Close 2nd: Pestilence at the Showcase in San Antonio in 1990.

Some memorable Austin shows: Die Kruezen and Straw Dogs at the Cannibal Club 1989 or 1990; KMFDM at the Cannibal Club 1991; Soundgarden at Liberty Lunch 1989; Kreator and Morgoth at the Backroom 1991;

Radiohead at AAC for the In Rainbows tour. Saw them in Houston the night before but Dallas was a better show -- had incredibly good seats. There are probably a couple Radiohead shows among my top five. Other memorable shows include:

  • The National at Granada on the "Boxer" tour -- got to hang out with the band backstage after the show
  • Ryan Adams at Red Rocks a couple Mays ago -- massive hail/T-storms blew in and cut the show a little short but that place is like the Augusta National of music venues
  • Neutral Milk Hotel in Dallas at the Majestic -- discovered them (thanks to HF, I think) after Mangum's breakdown so never was in a place to see them live but caught his solo show and then the full band a couple years ago when they rolled through (so, so fucking good)
  • Any number of Wilco shows in Dallas
  • LCD Soundsystem at Southside Ballroom on the "It's Happening" tour -- knew I liked them before but they melted my fucking face off live (show at Bomb Factory last Oct was pretty fucking killer too)
  • R.E.M. on "Green" tour in San Antonio -- this was my first true concert where I went with a couple of older friends (think I was a fresh or soph in HS)

Oh, and the Pixies in some small, odd place in Austin in 1991 or 1992 before they rolled through on U2's "Achtung Baby" tour in the spring was a pretty righteous show.

The Austin Opera House, perhaps? Saw Faith no More, RHCP and Jane's Addiction there around the same time
