my boy Chief valiantly fought cancer for months, and this morning the fight finally ended with a draw. Chief went through a lot in his 14.5 years, and we nearly lost him a few different times over the years, especially the time when he suffered an aneurysm at the beginning of the pandemic. but through it all he always kept smiling and wagging his tail. nothing could stop him from loving his life, and he was happy right up until the moment he passed. it gives me lots of peace and comfort to know that Chief is finally on the other side of the rainbow bridge, running and playing with his big sister Bailey. Good boy Chief. Papa loves you. 🧡🧡🧡

This is Ole (Oh-Lee).  He was named after Olaf, the snowman in the Disney movie Frozen.  I wanted to name him Blanco, but was outvoted….by my granddaughters…I never stood a chance.  Ten years ago, my wife’s consulting job required a fair amount of travel and she was worried about me being at home by myself.  Our three kids were all out of college and lived out of town.  So, she decided we needed a dog. Specifically, I needed a dog for companionship when she was away.  I told her I was fine and didn’t need a dog, but she was undeterred….as wives can be.  Within a week, she goes to a Poodle rescue shelter and brings home Ole.  Don’t let the “Poodle”in Ole or his unassuming appearance fool you.  Ole is fast as shit.  He catches squirrels.  He doesn’t hurt them.  He just wants to play with ‘em and, over time, the squirrels at the Stafford Estate have come to understand that it’s just a game for Ole, so the squirrels play along.   In fact, the squirrels will lie spread eagle on the sidewalk outside the kitchen window waiting for Ole to see them, so he’ll come outside to play.  Over the past several years, my wife has been out of state up to a month at a time to take care of her ailing parents.  I don’t know what I’d do without Ole.

Can Ole come out and play?

Looks like you already bought Luna’s new boyfriends bed:

Good looking dog, but Luna would murder him over her stuff. That and she gets jealous of other dogs vying for my attention. Im definitely her human.

Hope the pup finds a good home.

God speed Chief. Say hi to Amber and all the others waiting for you across the rainbow bridge.

If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they went.  @Derka Chief’s waiting on the other side.

My dad always says that the thing he’s looking forward to the most in the afterlife is being reunited with all the dogs he’s known that have died before him.

That’s why it’s heaven.

Yup.  Can't wait to meet back up with Jeepers, Tuckwell, Agnes, and Norman.  Gumbo will surely be headed over soon, but Pluto the insane chihuahua will outlive the planet.

I know it's been talked about here but any of yall make homemade dog food? We made a batch with shredded chicken thigh meat, a little white rice, diced carrots, and mashed up sweet potato. Dog loves it - but I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing. Don't wanna deplete him of anything he needs.

Yes, I do and use many of the same ingredients you do.

The problem is there are certain nutrients in dog food that are not in that. There's two things you can do. One is to buy the additives. Problem is they are more expensive than the food is. The other option is to mix in dog food. I do a 50/50 split of people and dog food and my vet feels that is fine.

I was really perplexed by this because I figured wolves/coyotes/foxes just ate meat. It turns out they get these nutrients by eating the guts of animals that eat plants.

I think pumpkin has nutritional value for them, we used to mix canned pumpkin with their kibble. Might look in to adding that to your mix.

Yep. My mix was ground turkey, pumpkin, mixed veggies, rice, and olive oil.

I feed my big older dog ~ 3 oz each chicken thigh, peas & carrots, and rice, topped with a small bit of blueberries, twice a day.  At night she is usually still hungry so I give her a bowl of salmon-heavy kibble for dessert.  Then she craps on the floor.  The end.

Pumpkin is good for their digestion. We feed it to our dog when he has an upset stomach or constipation.

my go-to upset dog tummy meal is an instant pot with 2 or 3 cups of rice, carrot and green bean chunks, and a few frozen chicken breasts on a steamer rack up out of the liquid. By the time the rice is done cooking and you do a 10 minute natural pressure release the frozen chicken is past 165F and everything is good to go. Shred or chop the chicken and store in big ass tupperwares. That'll make two or three days of food that my dog would run through a wall for

Addison adjusting nicely to her new home. She’ll lay outside and stare at the pool all day if we let her. Took her for her first boat ride and once we got going she got over her fear and loved it.

Last pic is our friend’s dog jumping in the water after seeing their daughter jump in to cool off.
