XFL: The sequel

Recommended Posts

My 6 year old is fascinated with football so i became a bit of an XFL expert over the weekend while watching the majority of all 4 games.

Observations:

- Love the in-game audio of the conversations between players and coaches.

- Instant reaction on sidelines after positive (TD's, etc.) and negative (missed FG) plays is cool, if a little uncomfortable.

- Cool that turnover takers get to keep the other team's ball as a trophy.

- QB play is rough.

- More punting than I expected, Dallas punted on 4th and less than a foot from their own 40 in a scoreless or 3-0 game in the first half.

- Kickoff solution is really good.

- Curious about ticket sales.  Large areas of the best seats don't show any availability.  I'd be shocked if those are really all sold (especially in the $100+ / seat range).  Wondering if they sell those to walk-up buyers to minimize the empty seats close to the field.

- All four stadiums, announced official attendance was approximately 17,500 (suspicious)

- Hearing the communication between refs and replay official was interesting, process moved along quickly for the most part.

- Like the 1, 2 and 3 point conversion options.  Wouldn't mind having a separate 1 point PAT option that is a 40-45 yard kick.  Also would like a 4 point field goal (Not PAT)  from 55 and beyond.

- Bob Stoops still sucks.

- Never saw the much heralded "double forward pass" play.  Maybe I missed it, but was disappointed it didn't play a more prominent role.

- Wondered if the in-stadium fans have any option to hear any of the coach/player, player / sideline reporter , or referee / replay official communication.  If not, they need to figure out a way to include the fans in the stands on that as it enhances the watching experience in my opinion. (similar to scanners at car races)

Overall, entertaining enough.  Hopefully they will build some momentum, avoid the urge to play conservative football and understand that pushing the envelope on offense is what people want to see.

Totally this.

I think they would have been better off to have found a couple of no-name non-BCS division football coaches with innovative offenses then recycling some of the retreads they have.

Good luck expecting any coach in this league to "think outside the box." It'll be the same mostly conservative stuff that's in the NFL. Like I said, I was surprised how many PATs were for one point, and were just handoffs that predictably didn't work.

What I could not understand is that these guys could not find better quarterbacks then what I saw in these games. In one game both QBs were 1-6 over their last 7 throws. I know it took us years before we got Ehlinger but can it really be that bad?

It seemed we could hear more talking and on field noise than nfl game. Our ticket rep said there was a high demand in walk up ticket sales. There were some scalpers out front of stadium. Those that have kids and want to go watch football at a good price then this is it.

I did find it kind of odd that reported attendance for all four games were nearly identical at around 17,500. What are the odds of that being so close across 4 locations? I'll be more interesting to see how large the ratings drop will be. AAF had big numbers but then were on all sorts of weird places. This league is supposed to stay on ABC, Fox, and ESPN, so will be more accessible. I for one will keep watching at least until an overtime game. I don't like the Dallas team so I have no real cheering interest for any particular team, just want to see if the product stays consistent.

Wouldn’t be surprised if houston actually surpassed reported numbers. They opened up the top deck at one point and I definitely saw some people up there. I was a little drunk by the time the fourth quarter got going, but it definitely seemed like a good crowd and everyone seemed to be having a good time. A beer vendor told me they’d never sold so much beer at the stadium. Pretty impressive for a half full or so stadium.

I saw one guy pull up like he was about to attempt the 2nd pass, but then tucked it and ran.  Yeah, that, the extra point gutlessness, and lousy qb play were my biggest disappointments.

Championship game is being played in Houston. Easy trip for a Super X-Bowl.

Edit.

Dallas picked up Brogan Roback:

Stoops is a genius, I tell you.  He knows Brogan Roback is the last piece of the puzzle necessary for Dallas to make the playoffs.  I bet Brogan can outrun Landry Jones in the 40 in his brogans.

The lack of qb talent after the nfl benches and practice squads is becoming quickly apparent. They might need to legit change the rules to favor offenses. Let wrs get a running start and push off. Maybe give the offense an extra lineman. The QBs would still miss a ton of open passes.

I'd like to see an offense go 100% triple option.

They need to decide if they want to be #metoofutball or something different. I'm thinking Errbody Eligible, Pass Anywhere Anytime,  and No Incompletions.

Errbody Eligible speaks for itself.

Pass Anywhere Anytime says forward pass okay regardless of line of scrimmage, and multiple passes per play.

No Incompletions says the ball is live whether caught or not.

Mmmmmaybe throw-ins on out of bounds, turn it over if player goes out on his own or throws it out.

Fewer officials, fewer stoppages.

Cancelled the season for the Wuhan Virus. Over/Under on whether it'll survive this or not.
Politically and rightly the correct thing to do.

But man, if no focks given they would rule all sports being the only game in town, literally.

I would think Vince would have played the games with no fans and restructure some type of tv deal being america wants sports.

Probably a break for them, since they have a go-to excuse for collapsing, instead of everybody just losing interest after the middle of the second week.

there was also the potential 1986 Houston Gamblers "Dream Team" with Jim Kelly and Herschel Walker and coached by Jack Pardee and owned by Donald Trump (I think they were going to be in Houston maybe in NJ).....but of course the league folded

Houston will always have the only Roller Ball Championship though with the greatness of Jonhthan E.
