there are people here who know what happened, and there are other people here who do not want those people posting this "speculation" about what happened, as they fear that it will tarnish Jake's name or legacy or something. to be totally honest i can't relate to these people/their concerns, and i therefore don't fully understand the folks who are getting so upset every time someone mentions what happened. we know what caused his death. i doubt i need to explicitly post it for you to figure it out. and frankly, if there were ever a site where i thought people could handle talking about this subject, i thought it would be this one. now i can only post from my own POV, and so again, from where i sit, i just don't even understand the consternation and hand wringing over discussing how he died. how he died has nothing to do with how he lived his life, or who he was/what he meant to people. many of my former students and their families were friends of Jake's and his family, and *everything* i have learned about this kid in the last few days shows that he was nothing but a bright light in the lives of those who knew him. the kind of guy who always had a smile on his face, and who was quick to put a smile on the faces of those around him. even in the UT locker room, surrounded by all stars and future pros, the people around him looked up to him and wanted to be more like him. a truly special individual who was beloved by all. how he died does nothing to change or diminish any of that.23 points

and just to clarify what i meant in my last post when i said that i didn't (don't) understand the folks who are getting upset, here's why: he wasn't committing a violent crime; he wasn't robbing people, or thieving, or killing, or anything like that. he wasn't even doing anything that the vast majority of us haven't done (or at least the equivalent) when we were his age. hell, many of us still are doing these things. it has nothing to do with your character or your heart or the way you live your life and treat people. the fact that so many people still have such severe hang ups in regards to even talking about this stuff IS a part of the problem. this thread may not be the place to hash out that particular subject, but the stigma that's being perpetuated here sadly only makes things worse.20 points

To clarify -- and this is just my position -- I don't think it's inappropriate to discuss the cause of Jake Ehlinger's death. Just not the day the news broke when it's only speculation and rumor. When the true facts come out, I think it can be healthy to discuss, especially if part of a greater awareness. And most of all, Wanker Bob just needed to get the fuck out.15 points

Biscuit had a rough night. Woke up screaming several times, then spent the rest of the night in distress. This is the second episode of this that he's had in the last few months. I don't know how much longer he has. I doubt it's much. Here he is eating cake for his 16th birthday last month.10 points

I have prayed often that God would spare me from such a loss. I don’t know how you deal with it. About five years ago I saw a man on TV that had lost his 20 year old daughter. The local reporter asked how he felt. I momentarily had the thought of “what a stupid question, how do you think he feels”. Then he changed my outlook for the rest of my life. He said “if before she was born God had come to me and said you can have her, but only for 20 years, I would have said send her on to us. He just looked like a regular guy, maybe a farmer or rancher but it seems to me he possesses powerful wisdom.10 points

I'm sorry that reality doesn't line up with your perception. Happens to the best of us. The numbers are readily available all over the place. Someone above already posted a link to some basic data. Being too obtuse to perform a quick google search, and having a strong feeling about something, doesn't make you an authority figure. As also noted above, it's hard to nail down exact numbers on homeless populations, which should come as a shock to no one. The point was not the specific numbers anyway. The point is that nations of all types are dealing with this issue, including those with more pervasive and generous safety nets. Anyone who discusses this issue from the lens of America's failure to provide proper social safety nets is completely full of shit and agenda driven. That's the point. We need to resolve this problem. Social safety nets don't and won't do it. I'm personally all for expanding our social safety nets for all kinds of reasons, but solving the homelessness problem isn't one of them because that's clearly a fantasy. Capitalism isn't the problem either, as nations with communist forms of government also deal with large homeless populations. Maybe if we can set aside these ridiculous notions that do nothing but self-serve political notions we can work on coming up with an actual way to help these people. I also agree with you regarding the wealth of this nation and how it's controlled by too few. But I'm not convinced throwing more money at this problem is going to solve it. It certainly hasn't worked anywhere else.9 points

I'm not up in arms over folks' speculation, it's the natural progression of things. And noone here is bombarding the family, their privacy is being respected. He passed away, as as grown adult, in his own apartment, so there may not even be a requirement for an autopsy. And if there is, the family can choose to keep the conclusions sealed. I've too heard what it likely was from a tad more reliable sources than Surly (sorry guys). If it ends up being true, it doesn't diminish the tragedy of losing someone full of promise. It actually reinforces the need for us to bring it out in the open. So let's not bash people for furthering the discussion. Shiva may not be over for everyone, but there's bad shit out there that needs addressing folks.9 points

I have my first job interview on Wednesday since being laid off in April of last year. Normally, I am not nervous about interviews, probably because I was always employed while doing one. But holy fuck, the opportunity to get my career, finances and life in general back on track has me all kinds freaking out. Hell, tonight I tried on the clothes I am going to wear and have been refreshing myself on things I know, but feel rusty about since I haven’t done my job in a year. Fucking COVID.8 points

What a world...more at the link, but here's the gist. https://www.vice.com/en/article/88nnwg/anti-maskers-ready-to-start-maskingto-protect-themselves-from-the-vaccinated Anti-Maskers Ready to Start Masking—to Protect Themselves From the Vaccinated An anti-vaccine conspiracy about the vaccinated are leading some anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers to contemplate wearing a mask and social distance A conspiracy ripping through the anti-vax world may finally drive some anti-maskers to do the unthinkable: wear a mask and keep their distance. The conspiracy—which comes in several shapes and sizes—more or less says the vaccinated will “shed” certain proteins onto the unvaccinated who will then suffer adverse effects. The main worry is the “shedding” will cause irregular menstruation, infertility, and miscarriages. The entirely baseless idea is a key cog in a larger conspiracy that COVID-19 was a ploy to depopulate the world, and the vaccine is what will cull the masses. Experts say the conspiracy is born from a fundamental misunderstanding of how vaccines work. It has been widely debunked and you can read about it here, here, and here, among other places. Anti-vax influencers are instructing their fellow anti-vaxxers as well as anti-maskers (at this point the two communities overlap to a huge degree) that one of the best ways to defend themselves from this blight is to co-opt…social distancing, the very strategy they have long decried. Sherri Tenpenny, an anti-vaxxer who was found to be key in spreading COVID-19 conspiracy theories, suggested on a recent anti-vax livestream that you may have to “stay away from somebody who's had these shots…forever.” Another prominent anti-vaxxer suggested quarantining people who have been vaccinated. “There is something being passed from people who are shot up with this poison to others who have not gotten the shot,” said Larry Palevsky, a New York pediatrician and anti-vaxxer, on a separate livestream. They should also “have a badge on their arms that say ‘I've been vaccinated even though it's not a vaccine’ so that we know to avoid them on the street, to not go near them anywhere in society,” he said. It’s not just social distancing that anti-maskers/anti-vaxxers are begrudgingly accepting. Some conspiracy theorists are wondering if perhaps their longtime bane, the mask, could become their salvation. One perplexed poster on the fringe site 4chan asked their fellow anons if they should “wear a mask around the vaccinated, because they shed the mRNA stuff?” “I am going to be watching these vaccine shedding stories like a hawk,” wrote another man on Twitter. “Is my family going to need to wear masks to protect ourselves from the vaccinated?”7 points

Well, when we supply one side with a mile deep stack of advanced weapon systems, F-15s, etc., and do everything possible to ensure that the other side has no access to arms at all.......damn right the side with F-15s will win. Non-trolls don’t use “democrat” as an adjective. It’s the shibboleth of the troll wing of the Republican Party. It’s Trump-speak and is an immediate identifier. It’s mostly inconsequential, but it’s a little like using “tu” to speak of the Longhorns. An individual use of “democrat party” might not be trolling, but it’s use is a clear signal of troll identity. It isn’t a partisan identity exactly, but they are rapidly become one and the same. This isn’t a defense of Democrats; I’ve never identified as one. I don’t care if anyone takes a shot at them, but if you don’t want to be considered a troll, don’t act like one. That’s of course ignoring the constant stream misrepresentations that make up this particular “non-troll’s” manner of communicating.7 points

I'll maintain that I don't think onboard is a troll. What I see is a GOP who won't become a Trumpist, but who also can't see that that's all his party has become. Onboard's positions all look founded in pre-Trumpian GOP delusion about the values they claim to have when addressing their voters but defy when in office. Just the standard of "now that the Dems are doing something wicked that the GOPs set a new mark for means that the high and mighty Dems aren't anything special like they claim" harkens to Newt (prosecutes Jim Wright for selling books while he himself was selling books "authored" by his wife to the same end) and Rush (effeminate, do-gooder libs are actually enemies of the state looking to enslave you). All of this was a foundation for wanton disregard for the welfare of the republic in pursuit of greed and power and greed and power only. "Them Dems want the greed and power, too!!!!!" True, but it's more of the quaint old version. A few crumbs make it to the little guy. The constituency actually demands actions that benefit the people instead of condemning all government action as deleterious by fucking definition. "I don't belong to any organized pollitical party; I'm a Democrat." Will Rogers almost a hundred years ago. The Dem voters I mostly know have some sort of cause they believe in. The cause leads to policy. Policy can be debated honestly pro or con. The GOPs abandoned conservatism with Reagan. They adopted social conservatism which means women shouldn't get to choose if they have abortions, The Ten Commandments need to be posted in schools and courthouses, and gun control (originally favored and involving the NRA, the GOPs and the Dems) is just an attempt to impose tyranny. The Death Tax? How many GOPs think it will affect them versus the true number it will impact? Gays getting married will destroy marriage? Where are the numbers or arguments? I think the exodus of conservatives and persons with souls from the GOP stemmed from the realization that the GOP philosophy was a charade and the entire GOP appeal was based on the emotions of fear and hate. Where do I think this leaves onboard? I think he's something of a deadender unwilling to admit he's been deceived. He holds onto the old sayings and positions that he still believes in without desiring to grasp that they have nothing to do with the GOP. Onboard keeps lumping all of us together on this board as idealistic, self-deceiving Dems with our heads in the sand. In this he displays the supreme GOP trait: irony deafness.7 points

It is not disrespectful to state a fact about how a person died. In fact, it usually sheds light on the subject and brings up much needed respectful conversation about how such a tragic thing can be prevented. I know we are all assholes here, but I have seen time and time again where some tragedy brings many posters together to share their experiences and help eachother grieve. I personally do not have many tragedies to share and grieve with other posters about, but I find the words of advice that are given to be extremely invaluable. Where this thread could be something like that, it has instead turned into a thread about policing eachother and who is right and who is wrong, which I find to be rather dissappointing. But appearantly talking about Hellen Keller's shit is more appropriate.7 points

True story, my 13 year old son was in the Pfizer study. My wife and I asked him if he was interested in being in the study last December but we didn't put any pressure on him. He decided to participate because he wanted to help the community. Proud parenting moment. Of course, with randomization and blinding, we don't know if he received the active vaccine or sham placebo injection. He did have a modest reaction to it, as he felt sick and ran a low grade fever. He believed he got the real thing. But I know that there is such thing as a "nocebo effect," so I wasn't completely convinced. Fast forward to last Thursday, he can't go to school because his entire class is quarantined due to a "staff member" who was symptomatic with +Covid test. They weren't allowed can't come back for 10 days. It caused my son to miss 2 events where he was slated to receive awards and also miss his flag football game last weekend. He got tested today and the result is negative, so he can play this weekend. If we knew for sure he received the active vaccine he would've been fine to play. Now, the announcement of EUA expansion of the Pfizer vaccine to his age group, thanks in part to my son wanting to help the community. As proud as I am, I'm still pissed off at the staff member who could've avoided this BS if he/she cared about the community as much as my son does. Am I wrong to feel this way? PS We expect that they will unblind the study very soon. According to the study nurse, if he got placebo, he will be among the very first in line to get the real thing.7 points

I don't agree with all that she has done, but to put this in some local perspective. Enbridge, in 2010, had a pipeline leak for over 17 hours in Michigan. There were warning lights that lit up in the control room, but the operators didn't understand what it meant. So over a million gallons of a heavy bitumen leaked into a tributary of a river that flows into Lake Michigan. The only good new is that since it was a heavy liquid they were able to contain the spill after it only went 35 miles, before it got the big lake. The line they want to shut down sits on the floor of Lake Michigan, and drowning in wind and weather, a spill there could floor into Lake Huron and down there Erie, Niagara Falls, Ontario and into the St Lawrence river. With a fault load of over 20 million gallons a day, through 60 year old pipes. And just do you know, of course Canada support keeping the line open. 90-95% of the refined products go back into Canada. I support replacing the lines with tunnels that are under the lake, not testing on the bottom. This is what Enbridge proposes, but it will take years, first for permits, then to build. Brat, send like all politicans are hates by a lot of their constituents, I'm waiting to see if we can ever elect a moderate again in my lifetime.6 points

The factor I'd be concerned with is making better inroads with black and hispanic communities in major cities. IMHO that's the biggest risk of more outbreaks as their vaccination rates are lagging. Texas is actually making inroads with the hispanic demographic but it needs to continue to improve. Here's a good tracker showing the disparity: https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/covid-vaccine-tracker-global-distribution/us-vaccine-demographics.html IMHO this is what everyone needs to be talking about rather than the reluctance of Trumpy whites in the sticks.6 points
