  1. I’ll go- what happened? I've read no speculation, and I don’t know anyone who knows. Not sure why the super secrecy a week in. Not to be voyeuristic, but it’s hard to have honest discussions about societal issues when we can’t openly bring them up Thanks in advance.

  2. Confession time: This thread for me might be the most home-hitting thread in the history of Surly, so much so that reading it almost triggers PTSD. My background is in restaurant management. I was laid off from my job last year despite being the longest-tenured employee since the first location opened over a decade ago. I had to lay off all staff but two or three people and then got laid off myself the next day. I was fortunate to have money saved and also recently closed on a house in Round Rock after selling my house in Austin that I bought ten years ago, so I wasn't destitute or living paycheck to paycheck. I was happy to collect well-deserved unemployment because I missed raising my toddler for the first 2 1/2 years of his life since I was stuck at that job for 12 hours per day. I only saw him for maybe an hour or two before work each day and my days off. But the reason I haven't returned to the industry is all about the industry and its untenable demands on salaried employees. I'm not willing to work a 60+hr week without the occasional Sunday off, improved bonus structure, or higher employer contributions with health insurance, life insurance offering, or retirement plans. Unemployment pay allowed me time to catch up with raising my son and gave my wife a break but I'm not sure if I'm willing to go back to the industry unless the industry is willing to soften its demands on salaried employees.

  3. Let's slow down before we anoint Liz Cheney as some kind of hero. She's still going to vote with Kevin McCarthy, the man who just publicly humiliated her and helped Trump end her political career, like >90% of the time for the next two years. And herein lies the problem. The traditional left/right divide in American politics is utterly meaningless right now. The only distinction that matters anymore is Trumpist versus anti-Trumpist. Why does a cretin like Erdogan keep winning, even though a majority of Turks know he's a cretin? It's because the opposition is divided, weak, and unable to stop infighting. This pattern repeats itself again and again in both history and current events. Any political issue that Liz Cheney thinks she holds dear - abortion, gun rights, tax rates, regulation, you name it - is nothing but noise unless and until we completely scrub our country of the large antidemocratic plurality that currently exists. The only way for Liz Cheney to make any real change - the ONLY way - is for her to come out and say, "fuck you Trump, fuck you Kevin McCarthy, fuck you GQP, I'm riding with Pelosi from now on". A lot of people on the left fucking love reading impassioned op-eds from the likes of Jeff Flake and Liz Cheney, or 100 former-Republican nobodies threatening to make a 3rd party. The mainstream media, too. They looooooooove that shit. I think because it gives them hope. But that's all wrong. Those people are actively making shit worse. Either anti-Trump voices coalesce into one solid faction together, or they're not anti-Trump voices at all.

  9. As long as Russ plays for Washington and Scott Brooks, he's going to both obliterate the triple double record and render it meaningless. The Wiz are the perfect team for him -- they play at the fastest pace in the league and play virtually no defense. Every game is a glorified track meet with opportunities galore to pad your stats. As a general rule, I don't like advanced stats in basketball and prefer to support my judgments with my own eyes, but the advanced numbers on Russ are astounding for a guy who averages a triple double - he's got a PER of 19.3, where 15 is the league average. For comparison Jokic is at 31.7. Russ isn't even top 50 in the league. And that is a stat mostly based on offensive production and rebounding. Do you know how fucked that is that a guy averaging a triple double doesn't rank in the top 50 in the league in PER? It's everything wrong with Russell Westbrook summed up in one meaningless statistic. I started thinking about some analogous players/situations, and I remembered when Paul Westhead got the Nuggets job and they decided to just say fuck it and run the Loyola Marymount balls to the walls system. There was no defense, just fast breaks and threes - it was like Mike D'Antoni on a crank bender. In some ways, Westhead was ahead of his time. But in his actual time, they went 20-62 and had the worst record in the league. A horribly failed experiment. Michael Adams was a pretty good player, an undersized jitterbug PG who averaged about 15 ppg for his career. That first season under Westhead in 1990-91, he averaged 26.5 PPG and 10.5 APG. during a time in the league where it was extremely difficult to put up those numbers. He finished 6th in the league in scoring, behind MJ (31.5 ppg), Karl Malone, Bernard King, Barkley and Ewing, but ahead of Dominique, David Robinson and Chris Mullin. Adams took 8.5 threes per game while the league average was 7.1 threes attempted per game PER TEAM. And he was terrible at it, shooting 29.6% from behind the line. He put up huge numbers, but he was horribly inefficient on a team that had the worst record in the league. In essence, he was a journeyman who put up insane, bullshit numbers, arguably the most empty calories recorded in NBA history. And here are his stats compared to Russell Westbrook this year: Per Game Rk Player Season Age G GS MP FG FGA FG% 3P 3PA 3P% 2P 2PA 2P% eFG% FT FTA FT% ORB DRB TRB AST STL BLK TOV PF PTS 1 Michael Adams 1990-91 28 66 66 35.5 8.5 21.5 .394 2.5 8.5 .296 6.0 13.0 .459 .453 7.0 8.0 .879 0.9 3.0 3.9 10.5 2.2 0.1 3.6 2.5 26.5 2 Russell Westbrook 2020-21 32 63 63 36.3 8.4 19.1 .441 1.3 4.1 .319 7.1 15.0 .474 .475 4.1 6.2 .651 1.7 9.8 11.5 11.7 1.3 0.4 4.9 2.9 22.2 Per 100 possessions Rk Player Season Age G GS MP FG FGA FG% 3P 3PA 3P% 2P 2PA 2P% FT FTA FT% ORB DRB TRB AST STL BLK TOV PF PTS ORtg DRtg 1 Michael Adams 1990-91 28 66 66 2346 10.1 25.6 .394 3.0 10.2 .296 7.1 15.4 .459 8.4 9.5 .879 1.0 3.6 4.6 12.5 2.6 0.1 4.3 2.9 31.5 113 115 2 Russell Westbrook 2020-21 32 63 63 2289 10.7 24.3 .441 1.7 5.2 .319 9.0 19.0 .474 5.2 7.9 .651 2.1 12.4 14.6 14.8 1.7 0.5 6.2 3.7 28.2 104 110 Advanced Rk Player Season Age G MP PER TS% 3PAr FTr ORB% DRB% TRB% AST% STL% BLK% TOV% USG% OWS DWS WS WS/48 OBPM DBPM BPM VORP 1 Michael Adams 1990-91 28 66 2346 22.3 .530 .397 .372 2.1 8.8 5.2 39.4 2.6 0.1 12.7 28.5 5.8 0.4 6.3 .128 6.0 -0.7 5.3 4.3 2 Russell Westbrook 2020-21 32 63 2289 19.3 .508 .216 .326 4.9 28.5 16.7 48.6 1.7 0.8 18.3 30.5 0.3 3.0 3.3 .069 2.4 0.7 3.2 3.0 Even little Michael Adams, with the most inefficient and anomalous bullshit stats that I could recall in my lifetime was more efficient than Russell Westbrook. Do you know how fucked that is? And I want to like Westbrook. I really do. He plays his ass off. Every night he brings it. His energy and hustle are in the top 1% of NBA players. He's exciting as hell. When he comes off a screen at full speed heading toward the rim, it's terrifying and exhilarating. The guy is incredible. But he plays losing, stupid, inefficient basketball. He's the Wizard of Oz Scarecrow of the NBA. If he only had a fucking brain...

  10. Thanks. Got several responses. He apparently struggled with depression and opiate addiction. His family had been trying to get him help. Sam’s eulogy even made reference to “he was never the same after dad died.” Of course, he was just a little kid back then. Tragic OD. We need to talk a lot more about mental health issues. Obviously, Jake had lots of reason to struggle. I hate that he could not find the help/peace he needed. Often, people just can’t.

  11. Who cares how Cheney votes on policy? She is a conservative. She votes for conservative policies. No one with functional cerebrum expects her to ride with Pelosi on policies. She isn't going to vote to raise taxes on the rich. She is a conservative. That isn't the issue. She voted to remove Trump after the second impeachment. She was in a leadership role at the time. It was a big deal. It is a big deal. She is currently standing up to the majority of her party. She is standing up for the constitution, rule of law, truth, and our democracy. She is facing consequences for that. We need more like Liz Cheney.

  14. Wait... that's the reason? That's what was so bad we couldn't discuss it? What the fuck is wrong with you, @immamac. Enforcing silence on this is contributing to the problem. We're not going to get rid of the idiotic and unnecessary "shame" around things like this if people who should otherwise know better are going to idiotically treat it like something to be ashamed of. Nobody with a brain treats addiction and depression as moral failures anymore. Anyone who does deserves public humiliation in a Dunce cap. Ha ha, look at the dumbshit! RIP Jake. Let's shine some light on the problem; that's the only way it gets solved.

  16. Fixed It’s been stated multiple times, none of us need to know. However, many of us have teenagers and like to take advantage of teaching opportunities. I’m old and out of the loop, I guess, because I had no idea the alleged cause was even a problem. How can I talk to my kids about issues I don’t know exist? My fault for not researching every danger to my children but when something like this hits close to home, it changes how much you want to know about it and the potential impact. My kids don’t pay attention to random deaths of a similar nature, just assuming it was a typical fuck-up they’re smart enough to avoid. This is a new topic of discussion for my family, and it’s impactful because it happened to a Longhorn. I prefer to turn it into something positive if I can. None of us want to disrespect the family, but once the truth is out there’s no way to stop it, and it’s only natural to want to know. It’s a basic survival instinct.

Not the best or sharpest shots, but still cool. Wish it had been a Golden Eagle eating a rattlesnake then I could have sold the photo to a Mexican oil tycoon as an NFT for a bazilion dogepesos. This is my snek breakfast Step one, rip snek head off step two, rip all snek innards out in one smooth motion step three, fly off really fast so dickhead photographer can't get a good photo

  19. Set a deadline (3 weeks) and then close the window for those who were given the opportunity to vaccinate months ago. Scarcity creates demand. As part of U.S. diplomacy efforts, send those unwanted vaccines to world hotspots where humans are begging to be vaccinated. Some have a death wish. Grant it and let them live in fear of a horrible death, but remind them their window is closing. It's time for the loons to put up or shut up. Carrots will not reach all of them; some need the rod of consequences. ~Solomon Sun-Tzu
