I've been pretty transparent about the finances of this site and often post subscriber counts etc. I don't run this site for a personal profit, even though people think I may. If you know people who want to see the books to do business with us, hook them up with me I'll show them everything. We aren't keeping any money and I pour nearly all of the profits from the site into Community driven activites (Tailgates, bartabs, NIL, etc) Surly essentially runs at as close to a 0 balance as possible january to january. I do this because I want to house a community that I am passionate about and want to grow and be inclusive. I also do this because We're Texas and FUCK everyone else. We started Burnt Ends in August so this is only about 4 months of Burnt Ends funds. Next year this will be a We have December outgoing 6k for the 6 guys who are still eligible and 5k for Cade (who is no longer a Burnt End, this is not NIL, but would have been due under the contract) and the dinner (likely 3-4k for booze, service and venue etc) and the ~4k we have going out to X and RoJo. There has been ~3k in credit card processing fees We have had ~5k in bartabs and public events We have spent ~10k on tailgate events and supplies Servers/Rent/Cloud + stuff related to running the site is ~20k Paying out contract labor stuff to help with things I didn't have time for was about 10k.52 points

Everyone keeps referring to this fictitious "infrastructure" being the reason that Texas isn't in the bag game. Texas isn't in the bag game because boosters aren't interested in a bag game. It's that simple. It's not because they couldn't get a guy to do it or the university is in the way. It's because they don't actually give a shit enough to spend their real money on players. LOTS of money still thinks it's preposterous that we have to pay players at Texas. There are also lots of people throwing wild numbers out that make no sense for anyone with a reasonable brain. We crowd sourced 70k for a position group over a year and less than 3k as of now for the 2 badasses on our team and everyone wants to talk about all these deep pockets. UT athletics doesn't bring in revenue from the BMD exclusively. They bring it in from the t shirt fans and all the people willing to spend 2-300 each GameDay on shit. We have less than 1k people willing to pay players and less than 60 who are willing to pay 600 a year to do it. People want other people to pay players, when the reality is if you like a team YOU need to figure out how to pay players. I've made it incredibly easy and offered to "be the infrastructure" for anyone wanting to throw money at people and what we have is less than 1% of the fanbase participating. Start shaming everyone you know who likes the Longhorns and isn't involved in NIL at all. Tell them to come here and donate 10 to the slush fund. Imagine if 500k people gave 10 bucks. That's 5M we could slush to whoever we fucking wanted, instead everyone talks about shithead BMD like they are the only people who can do anything. It honestly pisses me off.46 points

New poster and a long time lurker. Just graduated and moving soon to my new job. Been looking at all this NIL discussion and been wanting to contribute. Would love to contribute to Burnt Ends once I start my job after a few paychecks. Think we need to have more contributions and stop being fucking pussies and complain all the time. So fuck it, I'll start contributing.29 points

Word is that Choate wasn’t grasping just how bad this season went so Sark sent him to see Pearl Harbor to better understand the magnitude.18 points

I have offered this several times before. If you have a business or money you want to get to a player reach out to me directly and we will make it happen where 100% (or as close to that as possible without me keeping any) goes to the player(s). We (Surly Horns) will facilitate any NIL deals as we have experience, access and exposure.16 points

You guys that like to take dumps on this board about the “big money donors” are projecting your ire poorly. The BMDs are a fucking strength of the AD and when properly harnessed, project as a competitive advantage. They’re also not some faceless man pulling strings on coaches and shit. They have this really bad habit of saying “yes, but I’d like to understand it all” when asked for money. Shockingly, they want to help but they’re not buffoons and they didn’t hit 8, 9, or 10 zeros behind a digit in net worth by being morons. I’ve preached all along that NIL needs to be a layer cake from top to bottom of interested parties and a lot is coming along fast and some of it unrelated to each other. But $5/month still matters a whole fucking lot and Surly is a good example how that can ultimately be harnessed. Some things take a while and some things can happen fast, we’ll see a lot soon and have done a lot already. Beyond all of that, I will stand by what I’ve been saying for 6 months after digging into it and talking to people who cover this stuff with depth - the dark market (bag game) will dissipate over time if the right amount of money is an alternative to point to in a legitimate market (NIL). That will take a cycle or two to be proven true, so folks won’t have to wait too long to call me an idiot if the bag game isn’t relegated to a corner case issue for shitbirds by the 2024/2025 classes.14 points

Hell no. I actually met Bob fairly early on in Austin and never claimed to be a UT grad. I actually came to troll when the statues thread popped up...then I realized, there's some witty MF's on here and decided to stick around. UT site or not, it's the best around (by orders of magnitude!).13 points

It's always a surprise to me when I read how linear, simple, and uninformed many grown men are when it comes to how various business approaches by people with financial wherewithal play out, or in their mind, how such matters should play out. The entitlement, the impatience, the simple scenarios of things like idiotically just throwing millions of dollars out there with no understanding of why, just doing it. Shit like that happens when buyouts are discussed, how the bag game does or doesn't work, and now NIL, plus much more. I assume most people here went to UT, so I assume there are a lot of sociology grads posting or some shit. Maybe a lot of young guys too. Coming back to this thread after 7 hours of meetings and work and wow, there's no easy way to even address some of the bad bullshit and weak assumptions. I told this board weeks ago that the price had moved north of $250k. That wasn't speculative. ----- Like I said earlier today, I still think Texas winds up with 5 key guys that kind of suprise us all on or around signing day. It won't be because our brand or results won out. I do not believe Stewart will be part of that. I do believe we're going to wind up with some key OL targets. The NIL stuff won't hurt on that either.13 points

We’re playing for the Big 12 title with a pretty good chance to make the CFP while our biggest rival is in full meltdown mode because their coach bailed in the most shitty way possible at the exact same time. Yeah it’s real weird that this would be enjoyable for me, right? But thanks for your concern.11 points

Well if Choate isn't going to work hard at least he's working smart. Found a way to get a free vacation to Hawaii. Gotta blow off some steam after the season I guess.11 points

When your school suddenly has to pull its former HOF coach back from retirement to hold you and tell you it’s all going to be ok that’s a sure sign things are pretty mother fucking far from ok. Welcome to the Blunderdome, OU bitches!11 points

I don't get all the scorn for the little belly-tatted snake. Who gives a fuck if he jumped the gun on talks with USC. The entire fucking premise of that state is based on jumping the gun, hence their name. They celebrate that shit. He's already fucked over their recruiting class for this year, and he's forcing their hand on rolling the dice with a new coach. Despite Chitown's confidence they will improve their prospects, they proved in the 90's they can fuck up like the rest of us by hiring 3 bums in a row. Riley has arguably done more to strengthen Texas' hand than Sark has by orders of magnitude.10 points

From a boomer FB friend (I don’t care enough to fact check): Nothing but facts: Clay Helton fired Sept 13th. Sept 19th the 1st of 7 recruiting visits to the state of California (7) I said October 23rd shut out first half in Kansas November 5th on bye week canceled film sessions with players and coaches. November 6th another trip to the LA area. November 8th the week of Baylor canceled practice for personal matter. November 13th first loss to baylor 27-14. November 25th first article and tweet of Riley to LSU November 26th Riley meets with media and coaches and says no he is not going to LSU. November 27th OSU wins bedlam. November 28th meets with team for 2 minutes total to say he loves them and he is leaving. November 29th AT 5AM Riley and 5 coaches are at airport and on the way to USC. This was not 12 hours on a whim this is a process that included planning and TANKING. Riley to USC happened September 14th.10 points

I think it’s interesting that BMDs will keep shelling out money for buyouts for entire coaching staffs every 3-4 years but won’t shell out the money needed to, theoretically, prevent having to pay for those buyouts.10 points

Yeah. That's what some of us have been working on for months. I wouldn't call it "indirectly" as that implies UT has a hand in it. This will work despite the efforts from our athletic department. But yes, eventually there will be ways for folks to help. But the thing is, there are right now. Burnt Ends. I don't know why you're poo-pooing it as you wait for something bigger, when what we're talking about is 10-100 bucks a month. If you're a big swinging dick, that's pocket change to you. If you're not, then what do you think you're waiting around for that's "better?" Contributing right now is better than sitting on your hands waiting for the perfect solution later.9 points
