This postseason has become more sentimental for me and my wife's family. My father in law is the biggest Astros fan I know. He watches every game without fail, even DVRing them if he can't watch live and catching up the next day. And I'd better not tell him the score and ruin it. He's been a fan since the Ryan Express days, and still wears his 1986 NLCS shirt and talks about how his cousin Bill Worrell would get him into the Astrodome for free. He also had Muscular Dystrophy, and over the last few years his slow decline had resulted in him being wheelchair bound. In late September, he and my MIL were out in New Mexico at their family land when he had a stroke and had to be air lifted to Albuquerque. It was deemed minor, and we believed we were on the path to rehab and recovery, but complications due to his swallowing muscles not working caused him to be unable to eat and resulted in pneumonia. We ended up having to make the incredibly difficult decision to put him on palliative care, as he had no way to get nutrients and he would never regain the function of his epiglottis to prevent food and liquids from getting into his lungs. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 9th. One of the last things we were able to do with him in the hospital was watch baseball. His speech was all gibberish due to the stroke, but he was trying to tell us a story about one of the Astros players, but even though I named them all he kept shaking his head. Since he passed, watching the Astros has taken on more meaning for us, almost like a memorial to him. As all the funeral arrangements were made, and various family came into town, we always made sure to have the games on, as this postseason has taken on new meaning. Let's go Astros, win it for Randy!29 points

The red hats who show up with AR-15s to government offices because they oppose a vaccine? The red hats who assault the Capitol looking to kill political leaders? The red hats who don't believe or accept the plain truth that their favored leader lost an election? Tell me again who is fomenting civil strife and arming themselves. Continue when you're through masturbating. The brave men below were looking to abduct the governor of Michigan. Fuck you.24 points

Well, I guess a little update might due. So after a 3 night hospital stay with critical anemia, I got out, did my post-chemo/radiation scans, and good news is the tumor is reduced by about 50%. Bad news- "oh, you have pulmonary embolisms (i.e. blood clots) in both of the main arteries to your lungs. I guess not entirely uncommon with cancer. Cancer can cause coagulation. So great, onto blood thinners. But meanwhile I was bleeding out of my ass from a combination of chemo induced hemorrhoids and ulcerating colon from the chemo. So I needed to get the colorectal guy to go in there and do his thing, but he can't while I'm on blood thinners, but has to or I'll continue to bleed out. Catch 22. So I am switched to Lovanox, which is an injectable blood thinner than can be stopped and it'll be out of you system in 24 hours. So for 2 weeks I had to inject myself in my stomach (full syringe deal) 2x's/day. Got the roids dealt with, and simultaneously did an endoscopy to check the cancer from the inside. Biopsy did confirm I still had cancer, which of course I knew. Then the fun starts. I wake up and tell the nurse I think I have to pee. I try and can't. Oh well, I'll go home and pee. Get home, bladder feels pretty full, and no go. And it starts to get critical. Rush back to City of Hope, and they insert a catheter. So I had a pee bag strapped to my leg and a hose up my junk for a WEEK. I don't recommend it. What a fucking hassle. So I get it out, am peeing ok, so head to a rosary for my dear friend who passed from brain cancer. He was my rock during all of this, and he was now gone. Anyway, funeral the next day, feeling ok, but the next day I feel like shit. So thoroughly exhausted I can't keep my eyes open. Slight fever. Monday call and they tell me to come in. Run tests. Oh, you have a bladder infection from the catheter AND it looks like you have a blood infection. Time for another hospital stay. Fevers start raging, full delirium type fevers, have 2 different IV antibiotics, but am feeling like death for 2 days. Start to come around a little on that Wednesday (of last week), but fevers still present. Ended up 4 nights in the hospital. Now on oral antibiotics. And blood thinners. And flowmax to make sure I can pee. Then a blood test shows my hemoglobin is back down to 6.9. So yesterday get 2 pints of blood. Not bleeding anywhere so the suspicion is my bone marrow is struggling to produce the red blood cells I need. Great. But feeling better today. Oh, and as a result of the blood clots, had to postpone surgery for 2 months, so now Dec 5th. And that is the gnarliest part of all of this. The surgery will forever change my life. I will lose about 3/4 of my esophagus, and about 1/3 of my stomach. The remaining stomach will be pulled up to create a new "esophagus" and leave me with very little stomach capacity. So basically gastric bypass even though I'm probably max 20 lbs overweight. So that's where I'm at. Been trying to keep things in perspective, but it is really beating me down with all these fucking curveballs. But I'm alive, and I have a path forward, however fucked up it may be. So I guess I count myself as one of the lucky ones.23 points

This World Series is a lot more sentimental for me and my friends as well. The weekend before last, one of my closest best friends passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at the age of 34 due to complications from cystic fibrosis. He was one of the biggest Astros fans I know and was part of our group that took an annual weekend trip up to Houston every year for a game. Going to Houston for our annual Astros trip was his favorite thing to do, it's all he could ever talk about all year, whether it was last years trip or the next one coming up. I have so many amazing memories of our trips to Houston for games with him......I passed on the trip this year due to several factors but the regret on missing what would have been our final Astros game together and getting that one last trip together has been a killer. The last few weeks before his passing, every time I would see him he would tell me "dude, if the Astros make the World Series this year, WE'RE GOING TO A GAME!". I hate that he's not here to watch the games with us anymore but I know he was smiling down on us when we finished off the Yankees and will be doing the same when we take care of the Phillies. Come on Astros, let's win this one for Randy and Mike!23 points

I love this right wing that puts every specific wrong their cult members do in some little box by itself, as though everything else that's happened is completely unrelated to what one crazy person did. Just because their supporters don't follow actual news, doesn't mean the rest of us have completely forgotten 1/6, pipe bombs sent to Democratic officials before the 2018 election, that Harris's bus was almost ran off the road during the 2020 election, the plot to kidnap the Michigan governor, or any other host of things.20 points

At a high level, Germany is the aggressor and should suffer some punitive damages, but at a practical level, them rounding up Jews and gassing them is just like baseball. I donβt care. Anyone who disagrees with this statement is CR mudslinger and thereβs a reason they suck.17 points

So let me get this straight, your idea of good food in Houston is JCI and Mia's? And you form your opinions about the city based on Baytown and Galena Park? This is top notch trolling. Especially the part about Houston being the biggest shithole in Texas coming from a dude who lives in the Valley. A+, 5/5 trolling here.15 points

Oh horseshit. Only one side is espousing and excusing violence. Only one side is using dehumanizing lies and conspiracy theories to paint the other side as subhuman and inspiring their followers to want to kidnap and assault and murder. Only one side is actively stripping women and gays and Black and Brown people of rights. Only one side attacked our government in a violent attempted coup. Only one side has political leaders excusing the violence and the most watched news network doing the same. So excuse the fuck out of the other side for reacting to threats and attacks and assaults and attempted murder and actual murder with rage. Yβall bitch and bitch and bitch about Democrats being pussies and weak messaging and yet fall for the βboth sidesβ narrative and play right into these right wing terrorists hands by expecting one side to be fair and rise above it all and be the adults. This battle cannot be fought by being above it all and working within the old ways.13 points

My wife is an Aggie and we have a ranch 30 minutes from Kyle Field, so I have been to some Aggie games. We are going to our ranch this weekend and going to Ole Miss. Here is a complete list of the non-Texas Aggie games I have been to in my life: Alabama 2019 -- lost by 19 MSU 2017 -- lost by 21 Ole Miss 2014 -- lost by a bunch Alabama 2013 -- lost but kept it close, their best showing (I actually did not make it in the stadium as did not have ticket -- I watched at Northgate with friends while wife and her friends watched inside) LSU 2012 (loss -- and would have been an absolute ass kicking but for Zach Mettenberger not being able to hit deep balls all day long -- Beckham and Landry were open all day) Texas Tech 2002 -- lost in shootout. Was hilarious loss. Kicker missed some XPs and Welker went nuts on them. I also went and saw Texas Tech beat the absolute shit out of them in Lubbock in 2005. A&M does not do well when I am in attendance. I expect that to continue this weekend. Hopefully Zach Evans is healthy.13 points

Putin is playing for two things: 1. some sort of cease fire that allows him to rebuild his military and work to splinter the Germans, who at this point are weaker than bus station chili, from the rest of Europe, so he can attack again down the road. 2. hoping American political dysfunction will dry up funding for Ukraine, force the Ukrainians to the table, circle back to #113 points

βDe-escalationβ while an invader still holds a huge chunk of your territory = βsurrender that territory.β This isnβt a naval battle, or brinksmanship. Itβs an invasion. Imagine proposing βde-escalationβ if Mexico had invaded Texas and still held 1/3 of it. Just nuts.13 points

1 -- active support for refugees. 2 -- support of World Central Kitchen with my money. 3 -- demanding that my elected officials stay the course (they work for me, they are pursuing a policy path that I approve of, and I let them know how they feel). I'm no hero -- one doesn't have to be. But being a mere spectator, or even tacit supporter/enabler, of a totalitarian genocide is....ummm....bad.12 points

Thereβs a huge problem in this country of otherwise capable people (as well as morons) becoming insanely stupid through a gradual process of mental poisoning. Elon is a wonderful example of how being fairly brilliant or accomplished in one area can cause that to play out when you are ignorant in other areas, or when critical thinking begins to atrophy as you get addicted to the dopamine hit of self affirmation. A much more low key libtard(?) version of that is Nate Silver.12 points

These people are just, well, they are acting exactly like they are portrayed to be. Attack an 82 year old man AND you ostensibly were there to attack his wife, because, reasons? I really do not care about how unkind history is going to be to Republicans. They willingly took in these mentally unstable people because they needed every single voter they can get, mentally impaired or not. The statement from Gov. Youngkin was just, Christ on a cracker, just pure trash. Just say you donβt condone violence and leave it at that. If you are willingly supporting the Republican Party right now then you are also willingly supporting domestic terrorism, racism, hatred towards minorities from sea to freaking shining sea among so many other horrific things. Alex Jones is on your side! Glenn Beck is with you! The Proud Boys, neo-nazis and the klan all align with your party. Think about that for a second. If you support the same thing that all those people do you need to seriously rethink the life you have lived and how much of it you have wasted and will continue to waste. This party and these people need to be tarred and feathered and barred from living amongst the rest of the population.11 points

1- Actively support a few friends working there in Humanitarian Ops. I am slotted if they need me to head in. 2- I cover their overwatch on other areas of the globe (since this is not the only fucked up situation on the globe) so they can focus on Ukraine. 3- I donate all I can. Including kitting out a few SAR teams who climb through rubble thanks to Russian missiles. 4- I know what side I stand on. 5- I call out apologists. Have you asked yourself why Elon is cool with the Russians and Chinese? Could it be their markets and access to raw material? Would you be cool with the Government of Sudan committing Genocide so you could earn .00001% more in your dividends since South Sudan has some interesting REM? Dude, gotta pick a side and stick with it. Want the war over? Russia can leave. It is again pretty fucking easy. Elon's take perhaps was first being a visionary, then profit. Now it is ego as smarter people than me on this board have pointed out.11 points

Game 1 tickets secured. I'm taking my mom. My grandfather used to take her to the Astrodome site when it was being constructed. She's been a lifelong fan. She used to tell me that she was listening to the game while in labor with me, and Cesar Cedeno hit a grand slam. I thought she was kidding for the longest time, but I looked up the game on Baseball Reference, and sure enough, Cedeno hit one out off of Jim Kaat in the 5th. This will be her first World Series game. I can't wait.10 points
