Making final preparations. Not too much left to do. Wife is helping preside at the 4:00 service, weβre all attending the 6:00 service tonight, Iβll be the reader for the passage from Matthew. Both kids are here. They couldnβt come home last year; the boy was stuck in Germany with visa challenges due to the backlog of applicants from the war. Yeah, our kid couldnβt come home βbecause of the war.β Odd phrase to be saying, but there we are. And it turned out to be our last Christmas with my father, who was gone a month later. So, weβre still digging through generations worth of their stuff. 1944. Probably somewhere in France. My grandfather spent a very cold Christmas tending to the P-47s of his unit, hoping they could get in the air to provide some much-needed air support to the troops on the ground holding off the German counteroffensive at the Bulge. A ranching man from deep South Texas, at war in Europe. A few months later, he would cross the Rhine at Worms. Today, his great-grand daughter lives and studies near the banks of the Rhine, downstream at Bonn. The world keeps turning, taking us to places, then back again. Some Christmases are peaceful reveries with family. Some are bitterly cold, in a tent (or worse), unsure of how a war will end. Iβm not sure what to do with that truth. Iβm glad grandpa Ted came home, and raised my mother, who had just been born in January of that year. Iβm glad that our family has gone back to Germany, making friends, and a future. I donβt know what next Christmas will be like. But we have this one, right in front of us. I hope you can spend it with people you love. I hope your tent is warm, wherever it may be.39 points

Not really, because literally every Democrat has always said something like, "Sure, if Bill's in there, then lock his ass up, too." It's only a problem for the right, who demanded that the files be released, but who also hitched their political careers to a guy who is in there, a lot. And it's problem for everyone who fell for his con, voted for him, and believed in him, in spite of an astonishing amount of red flags. You are all WAY more attached to Trump than anyone is to Bill Clinton. Helpful hint: you are going to have to turn on this guy. The longer you wait, the worse it is for you. Admit you were wrong, cut him loose, and call for him to be hanged from a tree. Come back to sanity.28 points

I donβt know how many times I need to tell you that I was wrong but AGAIN, I was wrong. I saw him in the Vegas airport in June and he said hello. I wished him well. There is a big difference between the kid I knew and the adult that makes decisions only in his interests. What else do you want?13 points

BREAKING: POLICE OFFICERS WHO TORTURED UKRAINIAN POWS BLOWN UP IN MOSCOW According to one version, an unidentified man threw an explosive device into the window of a police vehicle. Two officers were killed on the spot, two more are in critical condition. The attacker also died. The eliminated Russians had previously fought against Ukraine. There is also evidence that they were involved in the torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing sources in Ukraineβs military intelligence13 points

This is the first Christmas at least some of us have gotten together since my dad passed 2 years ago. He was HUGE into Christmas (HE made the magic, not our mom), and the last time we were all together was the Christmas before he died. It's weird....his presence looms while we don't know how to relate to our mom, who completely disassociated afterwards. But - she's our only remaining parent. So we have to try. Older sister and her family didn't come, but it's okay. Christmas isn't the same. But my godpup is cute. π12 points

The Supreme Court allowing unlimited donations has been one of the worst foundational problems of our politics. Wealthy people always have more access to politicians. No one is naive not to understand that but we've gone out of our way for them to buy favors.11 points

@Harvdog Please let us know where sweet, sweet Tunmise is headed for his next sophomore season. I assume he'll be back in town today and participating at the Harvdog family Christmas dinner festivities tomorrow evening. I look forward to being regaled with more tales of what a great "kid" this 23 year old is, and also why I am a piece of shit for calling him out early and often as a fucking mercenary who isn't worth the texting charges required to stay in contact with him.11 points

Hey, Cunty McCuntbrain....now try on the next level of thinking. If you were THAT FUCKING WRONG about your judgment as to the most obviously stupid, narcissist, criminal, shitty person in human history....MAYBE consider the fact that you are ALSO that fucking wrong about your political beliefs as a whole. I know, I know, I'm in fantasy land here, but that IS the next step in the logical progression. They'll never get there, because logic isn't a thing with them -- they only grasp concepts when said concepts beats them over the head till a gallon or two of their blood spills.10 points

We had an extended family Christmas list night. Tonight we are having a "Lonely Stragglers" Christmas Eve party. Folks without family, spouses of First Responders, empty nesters with married kids that are spending Christmas Eve elsewhere, all coming over fire a fire and Colorado Bulldogs. I didn't see it, but CHIEF Jr. did. Our video board, coming into the subdivision gate had Cousin Eddie in the famous "shitters full" scene playing. God, I love our media person. Speaking of 1944 in The Battle of the Bulge. My granddad said that was the coldest he has ever been in his life. I've told the story on here before, but he was a driver for a Major. They went up to the front line, the Major opened the suicide door on the Jeep, a 155mm howitzer lets loose about 40 yards from them. The major slammed the door and then pulled his head inside instead of pulling his head in and shutting the door. It skinned the back side of his ears. My granddad looked at him with the blood dripping off his earlobes. Granddad had tears in his eyes. The Major looked at him and told him, "sergeant, just go ahead and let it out, and get it over with." My granddad said he laughed so hard that he bet the Germans were wondering what could be so funny. CHIEF9 points

Jim Beam closes its distillery for 2026. In Trump's America, even Bourbon is heading for the rocks In lore, America is motherhood and apple pie. Close behind is Bourbon β a whiskey that must be made in the US (among other things) to be so called. Its formulation dates back two centuries to the distilled corn mash spirit made in Bourbon County, KY. The whiskey is entwined with moonshining. Which, in turn, underpinned NASCAR's rise. It is as American as the flag. Yet in MAGA America, its sales are declining so badly that Jim Beam will shut down bourbon production at its Clermont, KY., distillery through 2026. Thatβs not great. However, this production shutdown is a useful symbol of Americaβs economic doldrums under Trump. MAGA apologists may try to blame the Jim Beam production cut on a general stagnation in distilled spirits sales. In 2024, after decades of significant growth, hard liquor sales volume declined. However, the dollar value of sales increased. In addition, market predictions indicate that liquor sales will grow slowly in the near term. So why is Jim Beam shuttering its main distillery for at least a year? So whatβs the truth? The answer is bifurcated. Demand for Bourbon, specifically, has decreased. And Trumpβs tariff policies have exacerbated the decline. We could call Jim Beam a victim of the Law of Unintended Consequences. The more direct would say the company FAFOed. The Herald put it thus: The move comes as Kentuckyβs $9 billion bourbon industry grapples with a glut of whiskey and a slump in demand at home. In response, the industry has pulled back production by more than 55 million proof-gallons (an industry unit of measurement) or more than 28% through August, the lowest level since 2018. At the same time, exports have been curtailed to major trading partners; Canada has been boycotting American spirits since March in retaliation for President Trumpβs ongoing trade war and U.S. whiskey sales to that country are down by more than 60% through October. Other Kentucky companies including Jack Danielβs Tennessee Whiskey maker Brown-Forman also have announced layoffs or shorter pauses in production earlier in the year. Trump promised that his tariffs would increase American manufacturing. Jim Beam is proof that that promise had the honesty of a typical Trump promise.8 points
