  1. I just went and looked at what was occurring in the '21 thread on this day last year. We were: Shitting on the admin's response to the eyes Entertaining Carl's info of a defensive silent Coming to terms with passing on Ezra Thinking we would land Dekel Crowdus and JJ Henry GC shits on Drayton Exploring the geeography of the midwest in an effort to explain why we were spurned by Rondale Moore So, yeah. This is all pretty much par for the course.

  2. Just back from three weeks on Safari and had an absolute blast. I know from the Vacationing in the Times of Covid thread that a bunch of people have this as a bucket-list item, so I'm happy to answer any questions. This wasn't a bucket-list item for me--this was Mrs.LL's great idea. But damned if I don't want to go back (not least because this trip was supposed to be four weeks, but our last week in Cape Town got canceled because South Africa is on Covid lockdown). So first thing's first: The Pictures: Did we see the animals--you bet your ass we did: Did we see Kilimanjaro--you bet your ass we did: Did we see the creepiest scarecrow (actually, a scare-monkey) ever on the slopes of Kilimanjaro--I'll let you be the judge: Did we see Victoria Falls--yup: Did we see the Cape of Good Hope--no, because fucking Covid closed South Africa. We'll do that next time. The Itinerary: We did this as a pretty comprehensive "I'm-going-to-see-all-of-Africa" trip, which definitely has its ups and downs. 5 Nights at Angama Mara in the Maasai Mara, Kenya--Probably our favorite. The lodge is on an escarpment overlooking the Maasai Triangle, and the location can't be beat. The airfield is a five-minute drive away. In the morning, the Maasai Mara is a 25-minute drive down the escarpment, after which you are in the best game-viewing area we visited. The staff was outstanding, and the accommodation and food were great. 5 Nights at the Four Seasons Serengeti in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania--We had a 2-bedroom villa. If you're doing that, then I would highly recommend. But I don't think I would recommend it otherwise for the price. It is a very large lodge. That was fine in the Covid times, as it wasn't very full. But I suspect in the normal times it gets very busy. The Serengeti was great to do because that's where the wildebeest migration was at the time. But otherwise, I think the game viewing is superior in the Maasai Mara. 2 Nights at Shu'mata Camp in Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania--This is a very small camp a long ways away from very much of anything other than Kilimanjaro. I really liked it, but it is definitely more rustic than other places we stayed. 5 Nights at Thorntree River Lodge near Livingstone, Zambia (about a 20-minute drive from Victoria Falls)--This also may be our favorite. The lodge is right on the Zambezi River, and you wake up to the hippos calling to one another (make sure you have a guide to escort you at night if you leave the tent, because the hippos will come onto the lodge property to graze). This is one we might go back to. The nuts and bolts: Getting there is tough. We flew Qatar Airways DFW-DOH-NBO and then JNB-DOH-DFW. Those are some long-ass flights. But if you're in business class, they're quite comfortable (Qatar is a OneWorld member, so you can redeem AAdvantage miles on them). But even so--it's two days there and two days back. When you're dedicating four days of a trip just to getting there and back, it's obviously a big time commitment. Getting around is also tough, and expensive. There's really no overland transportation--each of those changes was a long day of flying. For example, to get from the Maasai Mara, Kenya to Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, you had to fly on a one-engine prop to Kisumu, Kenya, and go through Kenyan immigration to exit the country. You then get on another one-engine plane to fly to Musuma, Tanzania to go through Tanzanian customs. You then get on yet another one-engine prop plane to fly to Seronera Airport in the Serengeti National Park, after which is a 45-minute drive to the lodge. For that reason, you probably want to limit the number of lodges you visit. Did I try to do too much by doing both the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti? Maybe--there was a lot of overlap between them. But at the same time, I really liked them both. It's really hard to do it yourself rather than through a travel agent. A lot of the lodges won't let you book directly. Thorntree River Lodge was one of those, and as a result we had to have a South African travel agent do that one. As it turns out, I was glad to have contact with her, because when we went to fly from Kilimanjaro to Livingstone, it turns out that Kenya Airways had canceled our flight and the next one wasn't for another five days. I got on the phone with her and she planned out new flights for us. If you are thinking of doing a safari, I highly recommend using her--Daisy du Plessis at African Safari Consultants (daisy@africansafaris.com). The reason I didn't originally do a travel agent is that the ones I initially talked to had their "favorite" lodges to which they were keen to steer you. And I had done enough research to know some of the places I definitely wanted to hit up. If you want to do kind of a do-it-yourself deal, you definitely can--the lodges have people who will help you with flights, etc. The people at Angama Mara booked my flights from Nairobi to there and from Angama Mara on to Seronera.

  3. Y’all shut the fuck up about media markets. They don’t matter and recruits don’t care. See: Alabama and Clemson and Oklahoma. Drop bags Get croots Win games Profit and repeat. Some of y’all are insufferable shitheads.

  4. I got the Pfizer vaccine. Trump didn’t have anything to do with that. Pfizer didn’t receive any funds from Trump. They invested their own money. The Emergency Use Authorization allowed the vaccines to get out to the public quickly but the same thing would’ve happened if Hillary were President, or literally anyone else. Hillary also would’ve used the Defense Production Act to produce Covid tests and PPE’s which Trump didn’t do. She wouldn’t have minimized the threat, dismissed wearing masks (once they were available to more than health workers), or promoted hoax treatments like hydroxychloroqhine, or suggested that injecting disinfectant into the human body might be an effective defense against the virus. (She wouldn’t have been perfect and would’ve been roasted by the right for some tiny mistake.) Trump was still saying that Covid talk would disappear on Nov. 4 a week before the election. There are millions of his followers who refuse to get vaccinated, or wear masks, or to take the pandemic seriously because of his mixed messaging and outright lies. No one could have responded to a global pandemic worse than he did. Hundreds of thousands of Americans died unnecessarily because of the incompetence of Trump, Pence, and Kushner. It Trump didn’t have some advisor who convinced him he should try to do something to promote the production of a vaccine, he wouldn’t have even done that. He’s too stupid to even grasp the nature of the pandemic. He was too busy producing a reality tv show and got really annoyed when actual reality got in his way.

  5. I find it hilarious that football coaches all over the country are currently screaming at their staff about why they don’t have an NFT program while having no idea what it is. Some poor staffer is having to explain blockchain to Ed Orgeron.

  6. Foster shouldn’t have been walking around with a tactically modified AK-47 in Downtown Austin. I’m not saying he deserved to die, but anyone walking around in a potentially hostile environment, at night, with a loaded tactical long rifle is a fucking idiot.

  12. My friend Mark got totally hammered drunk, fell asleep, and didn't show up at his gf's house for a date. His gf got pissed and gave Trump 10 bucks, using Mark's phone. He doesn't understand why he's been slammed. He's like "dude, all of the sudden I'm getting bombed by Republicans asking me for money. I don't knw what's going on."

  21. My dad tried to tell me when I was in my 20s that the salad bar at Fogo was the bomb, and I thought, yeah right, I'm going to waste my money and my stomach capacity at a Brazilian steakhouse on salet. I gave it a shot one one night when he was in town and realized that my old man occasionally still knew what the hell he was talking about.

  22. If you are arguing against the Southern California media market you are wrong and should stop. Los Angeles ingests things differently - it's not just sheer numbers or "passion for the sport" or TV ratings nonsense. Since the 40s, celebrities (even C and D-listers) have been paid to be at certain places or to wear certain things. Paid simply to do shit they were already going to do. This isn't a new or burgeoning thing in LA. Every single tiktok/yt/ig star gets their ass to LA as soon as possible so that they can monetize their trip get a matcha latte in the morning. No one gives a fuck where in Opelousas Addison Rae goes for lunch but in LA? That shit is a paycheck. You think it was an accident that Charli D'Amelio moved to LA from fucking Connecticut? That media market is a different animal from ATX and even if you looped in the other Texas markets - it's still different. When USC is good the Trojans players are as big as any current TV star around town. You can point out Alabama, OU, or Clemson and say that guys just want to win and don't care about the media market and you'd be right - esp for the average college football player - but if you are already a brand (a la Evan Stewart) 4 years at USC will be worth FAR more dollars (esp long term) than 4 years at Alabama. Texas is in a niche below USC but FAR above the rest. Del Conte, Harris and his staff, and Sarkisian and his staff have all been abject failures to this point with NIL. Made worse by the fact that they had a 2 year head start on everyone and still stumblefucked out of the gate. It's not a good sign for them long term, imo.

  24. It just will not stop raining at the coast. POC is full of water and more coming. I cut my trip short because we simply couldn’t stay on the water. Got the 12 yr old to wade fish with us for the first time yesterday. We found a couple of tailing reds on a shoreline and he threw over at them and immediately hooked up. Pretty happy that he is now excited about fishing and has declared wade fishing the way to go.

  28. Civilians that carry around assault rifles in public are unbridled cretins. Black, white. Big, small. Republican, Democrat. Doesn’t matter. Buffoonery doesn’t discriminate when it comes to machismo-driven idiotic dumbfucks who carry around these ARs or AKs in public, either in a car or especially walking around in plain sight. They're a bomb waiting to go off, one way or the other, and it's a travesty that people are allowed to do that - has been and always will be. Great, you're a badass with this wicked weapon and anyone crossing you is going to regret the day they did. Not so much. You ended up on a cold slab and another may be heading to the cage. Well done.

  29. Remember when people were saying Texas was going to lead the nation in NIL? Lmao. Oregon and Miami are straight up paying players openly now and we’re telling recruits we will help increase their Instagram followers so. As usual, Texas steps on their dicks.

  30. Said it many times on here but Steve Gaines was about to change the direction of that band. These two songs show where they were headed. Not sure Collins and Rossington would have stuck around for it, but it would have been fun to watch. Somewhere, there is a clip from the 77 show of them doing "I Know A Little" but Steve's version is eye-opening. The 77 show was 3 months before the plane crash. They were set to play in Ft. Worth for NYE of that year and my 15 yr old ass had tickets. You Got That Right Steve doing "I Know A Little" before joining Skynyrd
