How is, "If you make me leave I'm going to start hiring staff immediately which means either taking guys with me or hiring guys in place of those who decided to stay on for the playoffs, meaning they won't work for me and you won't keep them either" a "threat"?

"Threat" is PR language put out there by Ole Miss and people are just gobbling it up because it sounds sensational.

HE THREATENED OLE MISS OH MY GOD!!

Well, let's see, making plans to hire/negotiating with those still under contract might be considered a breach of fiduciary duty, or the duty owed an employee to employer.

And potentially also tortious interference with contract, once no longer employed.

I wonder what kind of advice Saban gave Kiffin. We know he said he relies on him particularly with Monte (RIP) gone.

what did Saban say?

go into the AD meeting guns blazing? Dick it up? Fuck them Rebels? Fuck them Land Sharks? If negotiations go sour threaten everyone?

I agree the rules are fucked. I agree.

also Ole Miss was foolish to believe he was coming back when he didn’t immediately announce he was staying with them once Florida and then LSU became open. It’s clear they had no clue or deluded themselves out of a clue.

The timing of all this shit sucks. The rules suck.

I think Lane sucks for leaving. but the money Nicole? It’s more money. More money more problems. And the place he is going isn’t stable at all.

That’s my view. He’s batshit crazy to go to a school that still pines for Saban. He ain’t HIM. He’s like sloppy seconds. and if he don’t produces like 2027 and brings them the MNC they will fucking ride his ass. lane has proven he can taken a mid and make it next level. For sure. But what about taking essentially a blue blood and making it reach the MNC. He ain’t done it yet. Can he? What happens if he doesn’t get it done by 2028?

LSU has dirty monied up and will expect big results. They are showing they have mafia or loanshark like integrity and tendencies. And I guarantee if he bags an MNC and the Bama slot opens up he gone. And LSU can torture other hapless folk who take the position like it’s a weird science experiment in a lab. I think he’s batshit. Ole Miss seemingly loved him and they would pour as much as they could into getting the athletes he would need. He got outcoached by Kirby Smart. There is no NIL money fix for that shit. Georgia Tech beats Georgia with Ole Miss level talent. Can Kiffin out couch routinely Texas, Smart, DeBoer every year? We are all on same athlete level. Can he? LSU is a delusional cess pool crime matrix. If he doesn’t get it done where Miles and Coach O did what does that say? NIL and portal has made a ton of teams more competitive now.

You smart and are one with the law. Let’s flesh this one out. My BF is a trial attorney and he was saying the same thing. Would they do that? Sure. They are that pissed that they’d sue. What does that look like? Would they win? What would Kiffin’s defense be? The rules are shit and set up to suck and it’s not my fault?

He did the right thing.

I’m saying he drug it out for weeks, it wasn’t quick. He spent time in Gainesville and Baton Rouge during those weeks being courted

I struggle to accept the idea that LSU has this mythical edge because they’re the only large program in a state that has talent. I’ve seen a chart floating around that shows NFL players per state capita with LA at the top. Wtf does that even mean. The same chart shows DC is a hotbed of talent but should Georgetown be a top team in D1?

yes, I bet that some mommas and daddies want their son to be nearby in BR and all of their relatives can see them play, But this isn’t 1950 where parents and relatives can’t easily travel. Boosters can effectively hand money to parents now to cover the costs. And it’s not like the other SEC school are far away to begin with.

finally every coach will remind recruits that Kiffin has a history of walking away from players while he demands loyalty.

kiffin will be gone within 5.

I don't think he personally went to either.

Layla and Arch went to Gainesville to scope out his potential high school.

Regarding tortious interference, it would be a spite suit, depending on assistant contracts.

If they're like most schools, they're on one-year contracts, so they probably couldn't prove much in the way of damages because there's little expectation of entitlement to their services beyond the existing contract.  Also, without their hiring coach at the top, their services aren't terribly valuable.  But they could fuzz up an argument maybe that a new coach would have wanted the choice to renew their contracts.

Then again, every time a new coach is hired away, their contract is "interfered with" by the hiring school and same with any assistants he brings with him.

The breach of fiduciary/employee duty would probably just generate cause for firing.  But that would require him to be fired before he resigns, most likely.

Probably all this would do is make a mess and make UM a less attractive employer.  And what they can't ultimately do is force him to stay at Ole Miss to complete his contract.

This kind of thing could come up in every hiring scenario, although it is somewhat unusual for the coach to "announce" or "threaten" like Kiffin and I suppose some damages could result from that, taking it out of the usual scenario where no one uses.

That didn't seem to be a concern with LSU given the way they handled Brian Kelly's termination.

LSU is a consensus top 3 job in college football. Don’t be a fucking idiot. Louisiana produces more top end talent per capita than any other state and kids who grow up there all dream of playing at LSU. 3 out of the last 4 coaches have won national championships and the 2019 national championship team was arguably (2001 Miami) the most talented team in college football history. Stupid fucking post.

Well…look at who took the job? If even half the rumors are true (like him stalking an ex  girlfriend nearly 30 years his junior and his showing up to and getting thrown out of her brother’s wake) then none of this LSU shit bothers him.

Why? Because unlike the Denzel quote he tweeted back in 2021 he’s a leaver. His mind is always on somewhere and something else. He will just roll on to the next gig. And he will have takers. Until he decides he is done coaching. And then get a facelift (and he’s sagging—I notated LSU changed the promo pick to a more attractive look—wonder if he yapped about it) and be on tv like his mentor.

Aggy and Texas seem to be “good” for our bye out money. Do we like paying people to fuck off? No. But we ain’t playing with a folded up ones wrapped in a hundred or Monopoly money. We have the money. We don’t have to steal from cancer kids to get it. Or rely on one big donor to cough it up. We just don’t make smart decisions with that money. I  don’t like hiring and firing. It doesn’t breed success. Hire smart and you don’t need to pay a buy out.

Kelly is a “murderer” (look I don’t judge uh certain crimes…ahem…but that poor kid he killed. That kid was so scared and texting his folks about the wind. He was terrified) and BK immediately started faking a southern accent like he was clowning them. And he didn’t win a fucking thing. Which is the ultimate sin for LSU.

Kiffin will keep hitching and ditching until he has his MNC.

Kiffin won 11 games at ole Miss lol, he’s going to do really well at LSU. LSU will have way more talent without much work plus the kids he pulls in with his recruiting ability. Imagine what kiffin does with players like Daniels, nabors, and Thomas jr. Prepare your anus.

top 3? come on man. you can't really say that with a straight face. I will give you top 10. Do you even watch college football?

And talent per capita means nothing like I wrote. Hawaii and DC are high up on the per capita lists but it's just playing with stats. Yes, I agree LA produces a lot of talent but there's zero barrier to someone leaving the state. I imagine that many of the NFL players from Louisiana attended LSU or Louisiana Tech but I bet the majority attended school elsewhere.

I think its safely Top 5. Not sure what results you're seeing if you watch a bunch of college football. They're gonna be good with Kiffin.

It's college football. Coaches take better jobs. Players transfer every year. Players opt out of games. Players self redshirt. If you're whining about loyalty in cfb you need to pay more attention to the real world. The wink and nod about the student part of student-athlete isn't even a wink and nod anymore. Mississippi isn't winning the NC with or without Kiffin. If you think there is a right or wrong in this from any side, you're somehow to strongly invested.

Also, if you think there is a "consensus" top 3 CFB jobs you don't know the definition of "consensus".

Get ready for some epic fucking title games between LSU and tOSU the next few years. Day and Kiffin are arguably the 2 greatest CFB coaches of all time, now both with keys to unlimited resources and talent rich programs. This is bad for us but good for the sport. It will also cool the coaching market for a bit as no one is going to want to pay these insane sums just for CFP exits each year.

Lsu is a dogshit “university” with coloring book admission standards. They are the only show in town in a talent rich state, a la Georgia. They’ll always be a force to be reckoned with

But if you think Lane Kiffin is a top 10 cfb coach, youre a moron

Guaranteed payout if fired (even though guv’na said they would never do this again 😆) - check

According to Alexander, via the terms sheet, LSU would owe Kiffin 80% of his remaining salary should he be fired without cause. This would be paid out, “in monthly installments through the remainder of the deal,” and “does not include any mitigation or offset clause should Kiffin then get another job.

Hire in demand coach before season ends and coach bails on post season - check

Zero major conference titles or D1 national titles - check

Very few assistants follow you to new job because you are a complete douchebag - check

This has success written all over it, just like the last one!

When they introduce him at LSU he needs to say something like “and I knew only the Lord could give me the wisdom and courage to make this decision. And in the still, cool darkness of the Oxford night, I knelt alone, to talk to the Lord. And the Lord said “Geaux Tigahs!”

Turns out that was just coach O on the other side of the Eiffel Tower.

Also, the contract details are amusing considering governor slapdick's rant about how BK's contract would be a thing of the past....

Kiffin will earn $13 million per year, making him the second-highest paid coach in college football. Georgia coach Kirby Smart led the country this year with a $13.28 million salary, according to a USA Today database.

At the moment, Kiffin and Smart are the only coaches who will make more than $13 million per year before incentives. Kiffin’s annual salary put him ahead of Ohio State coach Ryan Day, who made $12.5 million this year after winning his first national title.

Smart and Day have both won a national championship, something Kiffin will try to do for the first time as a head coach at LSU. Kiffin, 50, has a 117-53 overall record in 14 years as a head coach at multiple stops. He led Ole Miss to four 10-win seasons in the past five years, including the Rebels’ first 11-win regular season this fall.

If Kiffin wins a national championship at LSU, his deal includes an automatic escalator that would make him the highest-paid coach in the country.

Kiffin earned $9 million before bonuses this year at Ole Miss, making him the 10th highest-paid coach in the country, according to USA Today. LSU agreed to pay his $3 million buyout for leaving the school.

If LSU fires Kiffin without cause, it would owe him 80% of his remaining salary, which would be paid out in monthly installments through 2032. The deal does not include any mitigation or offset clauses that would reduce the cost if Kiffin got another job, fully guaranteeing his compensation. LSU would not have to pay him if he was fired for cause.

Just on this page alone I’ve heard prepare your anus and they will be in the natty in the next couple of years. I wasn’t afraid of kiffin last year, this year he had a solid team but others still looked much better. They will still have to play bama and Georgia and you can’t tell me in that interview that kiffin doesn’t look like he signed his soul away. He doesn’t look happy, he looks miserable and that’s not good for someone who supposedly has some sobriety chips in his drawer.

I did say “arguably”. I can’t think of another coach that’s won at so many different schools and done more with less at a place like Ole Miss. He’s absolutely in the conversation.
