I guess it depends on what you consider better, staving off deaths or a stronger economy?
But that's a false choice. We hardly come out of this with a stronger economy if 2 percent of our population dies this spring and summer and our health care system is decimated. At best, reopening things now just slightly delays economic impacts. While people die.

So just heard on CNN that 90K NYers have been tested and 24K came back positive.  If that's accurate...holy shit.

So essentially New York is a 26% testing positive while Texas is at 6% testing positive. Texas at 10K tests approx 600 positives. That is a big disparity. So public transportation versus Texans being in cars could explain it? Who knows, probably Texas is screwing something up in testing plus the benefit of not listening to folks that want public transportation to take off.

I would think the subway system in NYC did a ton of the spreading and probably is a large part of the problem.  Add that in much of NYC, you're also walking block after block bumping into brushing by folks.   Texas doesn't have anything close to that kind of population density.

Everyone needs to calm down on opening economy vs remaining shut down.
1. After a couple weeks we should have more data on which to base a decision.
2. It doesn’t have to be a binary choice. Total shut down or shuttling elderly people to casinos.

Right now, today and for the next few weeks, my focus is on the health care workers who are going to be on the front lines of this, quite literally risking their lives to do so.  If they were fire fighters or cops or soldiers, we wouldn't be having this discussion.  We might have the thoughts, but no politician worth a shit would be publicly talking about trading their lives for the sake of the economy.

Once we get past this initial surge, yeah, we'll need to figure out the balance.  Hopefully by then we have more PPE and testing to make it easier to strike a reasonable balance.  But right now, that balance is all towards helping those who are risking their lives to help us.  Any fuck who says differently should be go to an ER in LA or NYC for the next two weeks.

until we have the capability to do what south korea did we're not reopening much.  that means shit tons of testing, shit tons of backtracing, and shit tons of masks.  stolen from elsewhere:

I also think extensive testing and contact tracing is the key to defeating this virus while not destroying your economy. You need to test so you can know who's infected. Then you need to isolate that person away from the general population. But without extensive testing, you're operating blind and don't know who's infected.

We can't follow China model but we can sort of emulate South Korea and their extensive testing and tracking model. Testing is the key. Amazing thing is South Korea kept its restaurants and retail stores open during all of this. Unlike the Western world where we switched to takeout and drive through only, South Korea allowed full dine-in and normal restaurant dining everywhere in the country.

And initially, the country was short of masks because President Moon of South Korea foolishly shipped all their surplus masks to China to help with the virus there before South Korea also blew up. But unlike the US, around 130 South Korean companies worked 24/7 to make and manufacture more masks for its 50 million residents. So while there was real shortage in the beginning, South Korea now has surplus of masks and it's readily available to purchase. If we want to return to any sort of normal life, we have to test. And test some more. We have to know who's infected so we can isolate that person. That's the only way we're going to win.

dear cnn,

i generally like you, and you're a decent source of information and commentary.  but good god, please stop with the aspca commercials.  i think there should be some sort of law that once you make a charitable contribution, these spots get replaced with ads for cars or slinky or trumpybear.

the world is ending.  i don't need depressing commercials adding to the misery.

Question as work has been pretty freaking busy.
Where can I find out what is in both sides of this bill?

Sorry if posted somewhere already.

Who wants to bet that Jerry will not be anywhere to be seen on campus as he "orders" everyone back.

At my hospital I was recently told by an administrator that I needed to to a procedure on a high risk patient without an N95 mask cause it wasn't required.  I told him, sure, if he comes in with me with the same protective gear that I have.  Suddenly I was given a N95 mask.  Unfortunately these Liberty  students and faculty can't do the same.

No plan to manage the two. The world took the China model and ran with it. No other model has been proposed. I basically say sequester the age groups. Young adults (18 to 39) is group 1 and the rest is group 2.  Group 1 that lives at home get their rooms and closest entrance to their rooms. Older folks and children get the other side of the house and kitchen and the remaining entrances. Parents cook and make the meals available to the young adults. No common areas. Let the young folks be the ones to go out and kick start the economy.

Will this work? Who the hell knows! Let the doctors figure out how to make it work like on Apollo 13 with common house hold goods. What Trump is saying of just letting everyone out will probably not work. Shutting it all down will probably not work in the long term either. Ideas are needed and how to execute them also needs to happen. This reminds me of the coaches saying that LSU would call a conservative play because their nuts are small and LSU would call a great pass play and make a first down in the NCG. All our leaders are going small nuts or in the case of Trump stupid. The country will take sides while out of the box ideas that will work is what is needed.

I think that everyone in the country should be required to take a logic class. The fallacies thrown around by morons like Dan Patrick are too much for me to take right now. And instead of questioning it or dismissing it altogether as total lunacy, a disturbingly large number of people take it hook, line, and sinker.

Nah. They all fancy themselves as 1800s robber barons who get to grind workers to dust for their own personal gain. The real trick the GOP pulled off is getting workers in the direst straits to believe they are robber barons waiting to happen instead of workers being ground to dust.

Can anyone help me understand the phenomenon of stupid or corrupt people occasionally saying things that make sense.  Tucker Carlson did it last night (once).  Are they trolling?  Just playing it safe so they can cover all the bases later?  Just trying to give us hope that they aren't completely useless?

My wife is a medical provider (not dealing with COVID directly) and her patient load just got cut by half due to lack of supplies.  Gloves, gowns, sanitizer, etc.  Supply companies are overloaded and cannot meet demand.  So this seems to be going well.

Not sure if Collin County (where I live, yippee) has been mentioned yet, but add them to list of Trump cucks that don't give a fuck.  County Judge Chris Hill declared that all businesses/workers are "essential," and said we would continue on with the "ten people or less" rule.

When a reporter pressed him about why he would allow retail businesses like boutiques/salons to continue to operate, he said something like ""if you're out shopping at a boutique for the latest spring styles, I would suggest you don't do that."

someone said it yesterday, but it bears repeating - trump can't technically 'open' anything, because trump didn't technically 'close' anything.

my mayor, governor, and congressman will kindly tell the administration to go kick rocks.

Collin County is going to have a very interesting next few election cycles.  It is just itching to turn blue.
