CR: COVID-19 --Political Talk

Yes, I am pissed at the lack of tests now.  Yes, I do assign some of the blame to the President.

I do find it amusing that the "free market capitalists" here are blaming the lack of "socialist" leadership from the President for the shortage of tests, but ignoring the failure of capitalist corporations that they adore to be prepared for the need for tests.  There's a ton of money to be made, and they are as unprepared as the President.

Yep, viral illnesses will make their return once we get back to normal activities that can transmit them.

So, don't be a dummy -- get your flu shot.  My daughter just got hers (Canada really doesn't make them available to the population at large, just the elderly, so she gets it here when she comes home for Xmas each year).

My last bout with the flu was 12 years ago, got to me before shots were out that year.  It SUCKED.  I get the shot every year.

One of the doctors here can confirm, but I was reading that this year's vaccine isn't quite as good a match, but it still assists with the easing of symptoms.

I heard this too from a doc that the flu shot isn’t as accurate this year but you should still get it because it helps.

Until Covid came along I never got the flu shot because I never got the flu anymore because at least in my amateur opinion, I had it so much as a kid. But I got the flu shot last year and this year because I’m not an anti vaxer moron.

Whats the rationale for NOT getting the flu shot in this day and age?

There really isn’t one. I just never got it because I thought I never needed it. To date I was right since I never got the flu as an adult but because I can’t see any downside whatsoever, got it this year and last and will in the future.

I typically don't because 1) I don't think about it and 2) I have shit insurance that I'm never sure if it will cover it, how much it's going to cost.

Give them away like COVID shots? I'll take it.

Even with the COVID shots, however, there is too much bureaucracy. Went to the APH drop-in about six weeks ago for a booster. Three hours start to finish. Had to create an account, which took forever for the hundreds in line. The entire ordeal with filling out forms, providing insurance info, etc. is a PITA.

Can't believe that two years into this we now have a shortage of tests.  Major failure by the Biden administration.

man just imagine if there was an unused and expiring stockpile of tests - that would be NUTS! And then having the gall to ask the government to extend the expiration date on them

In a press conference Thursday morning, Governor DeSantis admitted state officials found 1 million unused COVID-19 tests in a warehouse. The admission came as DeSantis unveiled a plan to get 1 million COVID-19 tests to Florida’s seniors.

Today’s revelation follows allegations by Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried that the governor was stockpiling tests which were soon expiring. On Wednesday, the Governor’s office called that allegation “bizarre.”

The Governor said he’s asking the federal government to extend the expiration date on these newly-discovered tests.

It certainly looked/sounded like it.  I'm no physician but I do my own research.  Showed it to my wife who is an advanced degree holding speech therapist and clinician and she said his speech/breathing pattern was 100% indicative of an issue compared to his usual patterns.  The issue was one of three things---either he has asthma (she sees adults every week with an issue like this).  I informed her that DeSantis does not have asthma and he didn't sprint to the podium from down the street.  She said the second thing would be just nerves, very unlikely given how often he speaks in public to the media.  Third would be Covid recovery.

It would also help to explain why he's been off the grid for the last couple weeks despite Florida on fire with Covid.  I like that his first day back though he "found" a warehouse with a million test kits in it by coincidence.  Now if they could find that Florida warehouse with a million kilos of coke in it, we could have ourselves a time.

The weirdest thing to me is this is his first big appearance in weeks.  He's taking a huge risk looking/sounding like he's weak with Covid, the disease he's been laughing at for years.  He's around way too many people and that's a dick move considering he may still be infected.  And he did all that dumb shit to announce a $3.7mm grant to a community college to train people to build robots?  What the fuck?  Even for Florida, that's a batshit crazy risk/reward calculation.  "I look sick, I sound sick, I'm gonna infect people, and I'm gonna look like a hypocrite to my base...but fuck it...this JuCo rally of 60 people is just what the doctor ordered!"

Saw my allergist today for annual checkup.  As we were finishing up I brought up the whole issue of "do you need a vaccine if you just had the virus".  And she fucking W-E-N-T-O-F-T!

Said the idea that an immunized person would be any more protected or less likely to pass on the virus than someone who just got the COVID, or that someone who has recently had the COVID would increase protection with an immunization is just crazy.

She then jumped off of that and went into a rant about how big pharma and the CDC have made it so much harder to do the right thing, which was to immunize everyone once here, and then focus on the rest of the world getting one shot before we worried about boosters.  At the very least we should have provided assistance to them in getting their folks immunized with non-Pfizer/Moderna/J&J alternatives.

Very disappointed in the current CDC, which seems "more captive and less credible" every day.

Doctors -- pretty confident, self-righteous dudes, on the whole.

It took me about 5 minutes to sign up for my Covid booster with CVS. And the appointment took about 15, and that is with also getting a screaming 5-year old boosted.

The CDC has been pretty shitty throughout, but weren't they at first they were against boosters? The problem was that the CDC doesn't really have the power to direct Pfizer to ship a bunch of vaccines to Africa and central Asia. There were shitloads of vaccines in pharmacies, etc. all across America going unused because we've got a huge antivax contingent, so authorizing boosters for people who wanted them seems like it was better than nothing for those. It's not like doses that were sitting at a Houston HEB were otherwise going to be redirected to South Africa.

And studies have indicated that the boosters are helpful, particular in relation to Omicron. So, it isn't like getting a booster is worthless. I can't imagine the political shitstorm it would cause were Biden to ship a hundred million doses of vaccines around the world while hospitals fill in the US and nearly 1.3 thousand die daily in the US .

Yeah.....similar to get my daughter's booster at Randalls.  And from walking in to getting the shot took her maybe 5-10 minutes.

My flu shot was even easier.  I was at HEB picking up some arugula and manchego and such -- you know, the usual weekly list -- and saw the pharmacy sign that said "Flu shots available."  I walked up -- "Can I get one?"  Sure, fill out this form.  Sat down, filled out the form, handed it back, 5 minutes later, left after getting my shot.

And then went home and made a nice salad with dinner, using lemon and olive oil for the dressing.  Kept it simple, but delicious.

It's Playing in the Sand - Dead and Co for Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday night, and Margo Price, The Main Squeeze, and Celisse for Friday night.

The concert stage is on the beach and there's food and booze and water stands everywhere and it's all covered in the concert/resort ticket. Plus night shows every night etc etc.

They require vaccination plus a negative test within 48hrs to go to the show, so I'm pretty comfortable going for it. And the worst case if I test positive is I'm stuck at the resort for a few more days till I get a negative test to fly home

Update to this: apparently the entire crew AND band is sick and they've cancelled both weekends of PITS and are issuing refunds now.

I'm at least not completely screwed, but there's a good number of people who've already gotten to the resort and checked in and received their event swag.

That sucks man. The drummers had poor enough health this fall as it was.

He has Covid and is trying to hide it.

Frankly this is obvious but I guess nowadays we need more to prove it. Why I don’t know.
