Guess I can bag my new years resolution to spend less money.

I'm feeling the pull between saving money (I have no car payments now) and the realization that the next car I buy will be the most expensive ever and that it may be cheaper today than it will be next year or the following.

Yeah- I got a fantastic deal on 2020 Silverado 4x4 with the 5.3 L and tow package I wanted. I got it for $37,500, or $600 below employee pricing, with a list of $42,900 if my memory is correct. Now that same truck, that same truck in 2026 has a list price of $60,000+. BUT the dealers are all heavily discounting now. There are $10K in incentives on that $60K truck that bring it down to just over $50K. The fact I am considering buying a new 4x4 at a minimum 30+ percent price increase in 5.5 years is crazy. But then I go to Costco and see the meat prices continue to shoot upward, I worry what will the cost be in two years when my truck might hit 85-90K in mileage?

My problem is that I am now pushing 70K miles, and I had planned on having the mileage in the mid 50k, but I put on a lot of extra miles taking care of my folks, and dealing with their stuff. In fact I bought my wife a newer Subaru so I could rack up miles on her 2020 Sonata. To try and keep the miles off the truck. So I pay an extra chunk on insurance, and am trying to shift the miles onto the Sonata. But part of me says go ahead and sell/trade in the truck, and the Sonata and a new payment for that 35% more expensive (now that there are heave dealer discounts). Prices have actually retreated on the dealer discounts and with all the incentives But better than the 40% price increases I was looking at pre year end incentives.

Right now I am going to rack up the miles on the Sonata and hold onto my great deal truck. But the idea of how much more it might cost in 3 more years when I might NEED to replace my truck? That has me thinking along the same lines. But damn it's hard to bite off a 30-40 percent price increase over 6 years. But WTF will it be in a couple more years?

Hell I sound like a wife with an armfuls of clothing explaining how spending so much on sale today was actually saving...

I think you should hold on. I think the next year or two will provide plenty of opportunities to purchase newer used trucks at a deep discount from owners, who were living paycheck to paycheck.

I’m just waiting around till the economy tanks to get a three or four year-old low mileage Taco. I’ll keep that till I croak.

Yeah, I'll pass my 2013 truck on to one of the kids, sell a kid car and then upgrade me. I would love to get a 2020-2022 Porsche Cayenne but probably won't happen. I'll end up staying status quo for 6 months to a year and then get something more generic.

No one really knows, but I would bet it won't be the same increase the last 5 years has seen.

Also, FWIW I recently bought a car off Carvana. They brought it to my house and took a personal check. No dealer bullshit. Can't recommend it enough. They will take the vehicle back for a week no questions asked.

With SCOTUS tariff ruling this Friday, getting on some VIX options seems prudent to me.

So the supremes have a version of TACO, SDMAD (supremes duck making a decision)

You will find a broad variety of opinions.

My read is the ruling will not be a bright line yes/no. There will likely be an overreaction to the prevailing either "this is great" or "OMFG" narrative at the moment.

So kind of like every day.

is the thought that a ruling saying he doesn't have the power makes the markets go up?

My take is some form of chaos ensues in short term either way.

Thanks for sharing, I’m thinking about doing a trade in with them.

Avoiding CR but if Trump is successfully able to get the credit card companies to lower their interest rates, who are the winners on the stock market? I assume this will cut deeply into the the revenue of banks, so will this push money towards non-banks who pay a similar dividend to investors?

Retail sales will take a hit, because lots of folks won't have credit without much of a margin for unrecoverable losses. Banks will start cutting credit limits and other risk reducing actions in all liklihood. I have some AFRM that I am hoping gets more volume as more folks struggle with affordability and move more onto the "modern layaway" that AFRM. I thought about KLAR, but thought AFRM a better pick.

I also wonder why the executive order was only for a year? When there is 5 year Bernie Sanders/Josh Hawley sponsored bill he could get behind? But that's a rhetorical question. Interesting to see Trump and Bernie looking through the same economic lens though in 2026.

Lulz if this happened 18 months ago it would be a fucking five alarm fire in this thread about the government telling private businesses how to run their interests. It's pretty funny how all those rhetorical positions have been aggressively abandoned now. I wonder what changed...?

Jerome Powell on Trump initiating federal criminal proceedings against him:

Good evening. On Friday, the Department of Justice served the Federal Reserve with grand jury subpoenas, threatening a criminal indictment related to my testimony before the Senate Banking Committee last June. That testimony concerned, in part, a multi-year project to renovate historic Federal Reserve office buildings.

I have deep respect for the rule of law and for accountability in our democracy. No one-certainly not the Chair of the Federal Reserve-is above the law. But this unprecedented action should be seen in the broader context of the Administration's threats and ongoing pressure.

This new threat is not about my testimony last June or about the renovation of the Federal Reserve buildings. It is not about Congress's oversight role. The Fed, through testimony and other public disclosures, made every effort to keep Congress informed about the renovation project.

Those are pretexts. The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President. This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions, or whether, instead, monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation.

I have served at the Federal Reserve under four Administrations-Republicans and Democrats alike. In every case, I have carried out my duties without political fear or favor, focused solely on our mandate of price stability and maximum employment. Public service sometimes requires standing firm in the face of threats.

I will continue to do the job the Senate confirmed me to do-with integrity and a commitment to serving the American people. Thank you.

So an invasion, another threat to takeover Greenland, and now indictment of the Fed Chair, what else do you have on your Epstein File distraction bingo card?

Bombing Iran.

At least we skipped the fig leaf pearl clutching over mOrTgAgE FrAuD this time and just jumped right to the point.

This is an unbelievable distraction. His term ends in 4 months. I don’t know why I’m in disbelief given his actions of the past 12 months, but I am. What a fucking clown show this guy operates.

Just remember that functionally all of your friends and business associates voted for this…and would vote for it again today.

You can only stand on the sidelines for so long, man.

I didn’t stand on the sidelines in ‘24. I think most people I know would have a hard time voting D but his bombast is hurtling them to do just that. I’ve already been there, but am still shocked by everything he’s done in still fewer than 12 months.

This is really not cool as I’m trying to retire right now and am a little concerned about triggering big transactions while we’re on the precipice. Fucking hell.

This isn’t about Powell. This is about the position and notice to future Chairs and other committee members.

So is the market gonna go nutso at the open?

And what's the process? Formal indictment goes to the grand jury. Grand jury decides to allow the filed charges or not?

Just imagine how fucked up the handoff (if allowed) will be to the next President?

Trump has already done his usual decrease in jobs production numbers from the jobs production he inherited. Don't get made at me for posting factual information. So now we have to "punish" Powell. Because he did not bow down to President Trump. There is still time for Powell to shower Trump with ridiculous flattery, and creating some fake award from the Fed. And of course cut rates to spur inflation into the 5+ percent range. Then miraculously the charges could be dropped.

What I have found most interesting about the Trump administration is the complete emasculation of all federally elected Republicans. You hear an occasional peep, but mainly a universal bowing down to whatever the President does. Things which we all know would have collective lit the hair of the entire GOP on fire now is a shrug an a pretending of normalcy. It's the pretending of Normalcy that to me is the most terrifying. As folks I know have brains, self take delusions to themselves daily pretending all this is normal.

Attacking Powell and Trump pretending he knows nothing? Please tell me some of the President's supporters here know that this is wrong? If saying you are wrong is allowed anymore? If not bloviate accordingly.

The good news is my AFRM is up a little premarket! Paying on over time for stuff you want today I think is going to get more and more popular as the Trump economic policies fully take over the economy.

Apparently it's just going to hum on like usual. I know I made my normal buys like every morning.

Well, what was $4+ up in pre-market is now $5+ down and hour and a half in at AFRM. I suppose it could be that the big boy banks are going to move into the pay as you go space, with the 10% cap on formerly free market bank credit card profits? That would be unfortunate for me on this one. But I could see it as a reaction to the restrictions in a formerly free capitalistic market. Big banks will adjust to the new government regulation, and entering the buy now pay later space that should boom under this executive order, is only responding to the governmental changing the marketplace.

Or maybe it's something else. AFRM should be positioned to do better not worse off the directive.

The phrase "calling for" is doing a lot of heavy lifting for some of you.

I was hoping a bigger drop in American Express, but I'll take the free money.
