Caruso made  his debut at the San Carlo Opera House in Naples in L'Elisir d'Amore to a lukewarm reception; two weeks later he appeared as Des Grieux in Massenet's Manon which was even more coolly received. The indifference of the audiences and harsh critical reviews in his native city hurt him deeply and he vowed never to sing there again. He later said, "I will never again come to Naples to sing; it will only be to eat a plate of spaghetti".

Mother's Day ads just hit different after your mom dies( january.)

Not a bad thing, or painful.  Just not the same any more.

Yeah, getting a reminder to send flowers.

Changes the day for sure.

This. Mom passed Mother day weekend ‘22. I make a task list ahead of time to get the kids and I all set up to hit it out of the park for my wife. Church, lunch, poor one out for mom, then hello darkness my ole friend…

As we get older, losing loved ones is just how this timeline works. Moms by far are the toughest ones. What a gut punch!

Driving in to the office this morning, I saw a guy on the shoulder of the interstate on a BMX bike. I thought "there's no way..." but yes, he started peddling like a mad man and got in the right-hand lane. I didn't see if he lived or not, as traffic had sped up.

Remember what it felt like when the Berlin Wall fell? The world right now feels like the opposite of that.

Back in Austin for a few days for first time in 8+ years, so hitting all of the restaurant staples of the past

Pappasito’s on Tuesday, and then Lupe’s today… neither delivered my steak fajitas sizzling. I figured it was just a miss at Pappasito’s and didn’t give it another thought, but once it happened at Lupe’s I noticed that no one else’s were delivered that way either. Is that just not a thing anymore?

Also, how does Torchy’s not have the Ace of Spades anymore?! That’s like McD dropping the Big Mac

Shit, we were just reminiscing about the Hyatt fajitas, trying to figure out when those ended. Looks like around 2003-2005 or so.

About 35 years ago I went to visit an old German girlfriend in Hamburg for about 10 days.  She was just moving into an apartment ---- her first "on her own" apartment.  It was really just one room with a small bathroom attached. I'd say it was about 400 square feet and had a murphy bed that pulled up against the wall when she wasn't sleeping. So we went to Ikea to get her furniture. I'd never been to Ikea or even heard of it and was rather amazed. They had all kinds of this modular furniture. We bought a ton of it and they delivered it the next day. We spent a couple of days assembling it all and it was rather cool, how they were able to cram all of these modular things into one apartment.  Of course, it was mostly particle board but it looked a lot like this photo.  A few days later another friend from southern Germany came to stay with us for about a week. She walked in, took a look around, and said "Ikea?"  It just had that look.  Then all three of us spent the next week sleeping together in that one bed. Good times.

This sounds like the plot to one of those low budget foreign movies they’d show as the second feature at our local drive in theater in the 70’s. And I’m extremely envious.
