Kim Mulkey to LSU

Angel Reese talks trash on the court like basically every men’s player in the last 30-40 years

Implying that she deserves death threats and racist taunts as a result is a take, i guess. A very bad one. But a take nonetheless

Eh, she talked shit on the court and in the media when she won . Then she cried foul when she lost and people gave the shit right back. She doesn't deserve death threats or racist taunts but that's simply a strawman attempt to evade accountability on what she does deserve. She's a poor sport. She don't have to die but she can go fuck herself.

Dish, take. A simple concept.

Again equating talking trash on the court with death threats and racist taunts towards a young woman in her eaely 20s makes no sense at all to me. Theyre very far from the same

She takes what she dishes (trash talk on the court) just fine. What she dishes out is nowhere near death threats and racist taunts

Used to see Mulkey in a Waco area bar when I was coaching in Waco area...talked to her a couple of times...She is a piece of work...She is ranker than catshit under the bed...cusses like a sailor...total wild woman ! Was fairly attractive back in the day

Angel Reese seems like a bitch and a whiner.  She deserves to take some crap for her antics.  Her and Mulkey seem cut from an extremely similar cloth.  The people who make her behavior a matter of race are far worse than she is.  This is 100% a "both things can be true" situation.

6 more days until I don't have to watch Iowa fans use the women's program to hide their shame about how badly we've buried their men's program.

I can sympathize with Reese but when you are becoming more and more popular that comes with the territory. You simply can't read about yourself on the internet. Which is hard for this generation. Social media to them is like TV to us. They just can't imagine a world without it.

But also, does she mention all that if they win? Probably not. I just don't think that was the time or place, it came off wrong.

She also doesn’t have a great role model for a head coach. Let’s face it, you don’t send your player to LSU if you want them to be humble and modest and let their play shine on the court over their antics. Can you imagine a player under Vic acting like that?

Who do y'all think is the male equivalent to her in basketball or football?

Bob Knight was a huge asshole, but still kind of likable for whatever reason.

Coach K?

I know Scott Drew is persona non grata here, but do random CBB fans hate him?  I doubt it.

Gary Ward (OSU baseball 1978-1996) might qualify. He wouldn’t let his team shake hands with opposing players, nor would he chat with other coaches before or after games.

If you are a famous public personality in the age of every jackass having a publicly visible voice, you will be criticized and probably threatened on some level. The more abrasive you are the more attacks you will receive.

She is benefiting from her fame and suffering the consequences. Threats are never ok, but famous people need to expect and have a strategy to deal with it. It is coming.

She certainly should express her emotional challenges and frustrations, no problem there.

The issue I have is the context. It was the post-game interview in which the losing team typically says “we tried hard but failed to execute….give credit to the other assholes, they played well….we didn’t respond…. the refs fucked us….” whatever. And that’s it.

It’s like “horns down”. Please do it all you want, just not in the good game handshake line.

Angel’s maturity level had her change the subject entirely from the game and try to elicit sympathy for how hard it has been since “I” won the championship. She couldn’t own the loss, she tried to get everyone to feel sorry for her. Her road ahead will be hard if she doesn’t grow up quick.

This is the exact point I bring up every time I've heard someone start getting dog whistley about Reece in the past year.  Because those people all hate Mulkey too, it does seem to actually land.

My wife says there are two sets of standards for men and women coaches. She says when a man is a hard-nosed, mean SOB, people praise him for how tough he is and how he makes his players better with tough love, blah, blah, blah. She says when a woman coach acts exactly the same, people call her a nasty bitch who's angry and a monster. I think she's right.

Maybe but Dawn is also a very tough hard nosed coach to play for. She holds you to the highest standard. Dawn is an infinitely better human than Mulkey

It also comes with age.

After last year, Reese was the it girl in sports. Everyone in basketball (womens, mens, NBA, WNBA) was talking about her not only for her antics in the NC game but for winning the national championship. She even had hip hop songs with her name in it so that side of the entertainment world took notice. She had swagger and rightfully so.

But sometimes, you can have all of that swagger and still get beat, which she did. My guess is her age/experience hasn’t allowed for her to understand how to handle all of the highs and lows of the sport you play and the repercussions can come along with it depending on the outcome.

Well and the fact that she carries a 1.7 GPA....so probably not the best learner.

Yeah no. I mean, there has to be some of that for some people because people suck. But it’s mostly about the individual behavior of the individual coaches.

So this scene from Bull Durham, as much as it is played for comedy, is a actually a guide to how to handle the media:

There's a reason why you hear so many athletes giving the same boring "110% , didn't get the breaks, faith in God" blah blah speech, that makes you tune out the interview after checking out Erin Andrews:  It doesn't create media ripples.  Angel Reese decided she wasn't interested in the traditional route to handling the media.  She had thoughts, and she expressed them.  For better and worse.  Winning cures a lot of problems. Reese just found out that losing tends to make things unreasonably and exponentially worse.

America is still an incredibly racist and sexist country. And if, as a celebrity, you elect to raise your profile in the media ecosystem, it's going to come with some very real, unfair, and scary consequences.  That doesn't make it right, but Reese's post game speech didn't seek to tamp down on an already volatile and awful situation, it poured gasoline on the fire.

pat summit was the meanest, nastiest, most slave-driving coach ever and people revered her. she also kept her nastiness behind closed doors and wasn’t a total cunt out in public. i think it has more to do with how the coaches behave in public than it does with how much a hard ass they are.

it was also hilariously tone deaf when, in the middle of her “i’m such a victim” diatribe she talked about how she’s been sexualized. you don’t say…

angel- you are a women’s college basketball player who is worth 7 figures because you have put yourself, and your attitude, and your body out there, unapologetically. you don’t get to cry victim when there’s a downside to the fake that you’ve actively sought.

Same with politicians, but female politicians (and coaches) have advantage of being assumed to be more kind and empathetic.

They also haven't publicly thrown their wrongfully imprisoned former players under the bus, and don't condescendingly talk down to everyone they publicly encounter.  We don't know that they've ever encouraged rape victims to stay quiet, or lesbians to stay in the closet either.

Maybe not everything about Mulkey is verified, but if they were this way behind closed doors, I'd think it would leak more.

Mulkey seems to enjoy being an ass to everyone. Staley strikes me as more of a "tough love but you'll thank me for it later" type.

I was reffing high school ball in Austin in 2006. There was a girls basketball tournament at Hays, and Mulkey’s daughter’s team was in it. Sure enough, she comes waltzing in and the entire arena just stared.

She was the loudest mofo in the gym screaming at the refs every chance she got. It was my game off so I was watching some friends ref until my next game. She never let up. Her daughter picked up a charge and she yelled as loud as possible “THATS HORRIBLE, THAT WASN’T A DAMN CHARGE!” And I don’t think my friend blew his whistle the rest of the game.

It took me a while to warm up to Dawn.  She's probably one of my favorite coaches in the game besides Vic (and Collen at Baylor - sue me, she's very much the anti-Kim)

Same here until I saw the story on her keeping the trend that Carolyn Peck started by sending parts of a championship net to fellow coaches with a motivating message that it can happen for them.  She seems deeply rooted to where she’s from with the Philly gear she sports from time to time on the bench.
