Ok.  I know what's NOT wrong with austin.  The weather.  Shit is dope rn.

Lol. Weather is legit in the top 5 things wrong with this city. Yesterday was the 9th earliest 90 degree day in history.

Droughts, months of 100 degree days, polar vortexes, ice storms. We don't get the wild natural disasters like hurricanes, but the day-to-day can be fucking brutal.

Serious question- how old are you? I ask because Austin’s weather seemed very different to me 30-35 years ago- the extremes were far less extreme.

Exactly. I remembered when it snowed in 2020 -- told my son not to get used to it because it's rare. Then came 2021 with I think two different snows (including the storm). Think we also got more last year and then this year we have the ice storm. And in between that we have last summer, which was absolutely brutal but gets lost due to 2011 drought.

My trees/yard have just been decimated due to the last three years of weather.

We get 10 degrees but also get 110 degrees. Summers can literally go a month or more without a drop of rain and 100 degree temps. And even then we still get the harsh cold.

March/April are great. Outside of that?

I find that they can be nice and can also be brutal. The hard freeze this year happened in December. Until mid-October it can still be brutally hot. And then fronts starting rolling in around mid-November.

Some of you just need to move. The only thing wrong with weather in Austin is how long the oppressive heat lasts at the end of summer. "Oh my God it was below freezing for four straight days in the middle of winter! Oh no - now it's 87 and sunny in February!" GMAFB. Go live somewhere in the Midwest and let me know how you feel about cold weather. Or the PNW where you don't see the sun for months at a time and it rains every day. Austin has a hot summer, extremely mild winter and warm fall and spring. The reason that ice storms fuck up power lines is because we rarely have ice storms.

Do me a favor and next year count the days where the high is between 55 and 85 degrees. I understand complaining about August and September. I'm right there bitching about it myself every year. Complaining about October-April is fucking ridiculous. I mean - what a drag this is:

Took a morning stroll from my office to Upper Crust Bakery on 45th for a nice coffee and pastry.  This weather slams and goes hard.  Yeah, summer is hot (and agree, its getting hotter/drier which is no bueno) but man, its summer in Texas... WTF do y'all expect?  Unless you moved here from San Diego or some assclown place up east, that's what its like.  You should know that.  Besides, assuming we get some rain (c'moooon El Nino), we've got lakes with comfortable water temps.  Beats Galveston or, uh, Buffalo Bayou?

More Austin weather shit.. It was either '97 or '98 when it got up to 98 or 99 in February and it snowed some time after that.

I remember being in Waco in '87.  I spent Saturday moving in to a new apartment on April 1st and remember seeing chicks all around the pool grabbing some rays.

Next day I get up and call my grandparents house at Battle Lake (Mart... greater Waco) to see what time Sunday dinner was.  My uncle answers the phone, I ask what is everyone doing... he replies, "We're watching it snow..."

This kinda shit like currently may not be seasonally 'correct' but it does get sideways from time to time.
In general though, I do agree that the extremes are starting to get common place.  We went years without having serious winter weather events (from what I can recall) and now we are getting at least 1-2 a year lately.

I moved here in 1983.

In 1984, Lake Travis was as low as it is right now (639'). In 1985, I slid down the 18th fairway of Yaupon Golf Course in several inches of snow.

Yup, we were sledding down Murchison hill.  People were skiing down 2222 at the Tumbleweed.

In February 1996 it hit 99 one day and we dropped everything and went skiing on Lake Travis.

I think people just forget that we've had extremes in Austin long before now.  Maybe they're a little more extreme now, but it's not by a whole bunch.

Mostly, you're all just turning into crotchety old farts who complain about the weather.  Same as it ever was.

it was 1998 as I recall.  In one week, we has snow on the ground and thought we were all cool for school by hosting a daytime keg party in the front yard in Cherrywood.  Didn't bother putting the keg on ice (so hey, saved a few bucks right?), just built a little snow embankment to keep it cool.  And that same week, went out on friend's boat on lake Travis to ski.  Crazy days.  February and March have always been in flux in Austin as I recall.  I wish we had this much variety in July and August, but nope---10 degree swing is all we get.  95 to 105.  That's it.  for 90 fucking days.  I'm cool with this shit in late winter/early spring.  Just wish we'd get a little more precip...lawn wants to wake up but it's having a time.

We’ve always had extremes, but the extremes now are more extreme, and we are getting extremes more often.

Probably an Antifa/Street Racing/Homeless/Woke/CRT/Socialist  invasion at Wilco’s southern border. Todd and Don will tell us how scared to be tomorrow morning.

I was at the match last night with friends who had left their two girls at home (young teens, perfectly fine age to leave home), but they were getting those alerts and started to worry.
I told em “someone probably just saw a black guy in the area and called it in. And now some dude delivering food for Doordash is going to have a really shitty night.” My buddy at least nodded and chuckled.

Oh, indeed…I spoke from experience, and from remembering posts on our own Nextdoor group.
A lot of “I saw a suspicious group of Hispanic men in a white van going in and out of a house all day long!” They’re contractors, Karen.

Uggh, that's a little racist. Maybe they own the home and he and his cousins were setting up for his daughter's Quinceanera.

Was in the neighborhood so I drove by the city hotel for homeless up near Lakeline. You won't believe this... it looks fucking vacant. There is temporary fencing around it and two random cars in the parking lot. Doesn't look kept up.

Adler shouldn't be allowed to show his face in this city.

It is vacant - heard on Mark Caesar's show that basically all the fixtures, TVs, etc were stolen and the property is basically condemned. So.. we got that going for us.. which is NOT nice.

Pinche gringo -- you don't have the quincenera at home, you have it at an "event center."

Of course, my neighbor 2 houses down is a tattooed bald hispanic chef.  A few months ago, after dark, we'd been working all ay outside, in dirty clothes and such, and we were literally sitting on the curb together drinking beer and bullshitting.  He pauses and looks at me and says "two mexicans sitting on the curb drinking beer.....how long do you think till the cops show up?"  I chuckled.  Then stopped chuckling.  I mean, we DO have that one neighbor a few houses down who might make that call.....

I thought the cops in Austin no longer respond to calls.

That's gotta be a tough decision for them.

"We really want to show Austin what's what, and we aren't gonna do our jobs.  BUT.....you say there will be an opportunity beat up a minority and yell 'stop resisting!' over and over?  That's a tough one."

Negatory, that was 1974.

My kids thought that was the strangest of the Rankin/Bass stop-motion Christmas specials, until I showed them the complete acid trip that is Rudolph's Shiny New Year.

Ask, me about Bat Mitzvah's: I know them better. But if my wife leaves me and I hookup with my hairdresser, perhaps she can forget about masses and I can learn quinceañeras. Or perhaps we could delay the quinceañera for a year and have a dual quinceañera/bat mitzvah - that would be something fun to write home about.

No, I'd like to have my hairdresser, hypothetically.

Don't call what you're wearing an outfit.

So, let's say you put on your fishing hat, tie some saltwater flies, put on your mesh vest and waders and head towards the door for some fishing in Matagorda Bay. If your wife checks you out before you leave the house, what does she say?

1. I don't own a mesh vest

2. I'm divorced

3. It's a Jason Isbell song.
