Man stabbed stranger on Austin bus because he looked like his uncle, police say

AUSTIN, Texas — A man has been charged with murder after admitting to stabbing a man on a CapMetro bus in South Austin Wednesday night.

When police arrived on scene, they located the victim, identified as 30-year-old Akshay Gupta, with trauma to his body. Life-saving measures were conducted but Gupta was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m.

During the investigation, detectives learned that the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Deepak Kandel, stabbed Gupta in the neck without being provoked. Once the bus stopped, Kandel exited the bus with other passengers and left the scene on foot.

yes, yes. Lets bulldoze Dirty’s and roads for more public transportation.  Random neck stabbings are just a cost of doing business.

Jeez. The India/Pakistan fallout hitting close to home now.

Crazy south asian dude using the "all south asian dudes look the same" defense was not on my bingo card for 2025.  But that's my mistake.  Everything utterly insane and batshit should be on that bingo card.

So instead of 25 people riding all of Cap Metro we're down to 23.

We'll be back to 24 in a day or two once Deepak is let out of jail and given a lollipop and pat on the back from Garza upon leaving.

You morons raving against public transportation are hilarious. I’ve lived places with great public transportation infrastructure, and guess what? It’s great and it’s not scary. I hope you moved to Texas because you make Texans look like cowards.

Yeah. NYC subway only had 10 murders, 561 felony assaults, a rape of a corpse and a sleeping rider burned alive last year.  Texas cowards couldn’t handle that.

APA, county attorney clash over CapMetro stabbing suspect's arrest history

The Austin Police Association has expressed frustration following the arrest of Deepak Kandel, who admitted to stabbing Akshay Gupta on a CapMetro bus Wednesday evening. Court records reveal Kandel's extensive arrest history, including serious offenses, with prosecutors declining to prosecute him multiple times.

According to the Travis County database, Kandel has been arrested more than a dozen times, with prosecutors declining to prosecute him four times, filing no charges twice, and dismissing his case three other times.

Would you care to tell me how many deaths from driving accidents there were on Texas roads last year? It was a heck of a lot more than 10.

Just like flying is much safer than driving, you’re probably extremely more safe on public transportation than in your own vehicle. 23x more likely to die driving your car than riding a bus

But you die a little inside every time you ride a bus.

Seriously, I & my family would be delighted if Austin had an extensive public transportation system, and would use it.

I’ve ridden the Tokyo-Yokohama high speed rail, the subways in NYC, the Tube in London, electric streetcars in St. Louis, school buses in Puerto Rico & Taiwan, the San Francisco cable cars, chicken buses around Mexico, trains across the USA, Mexico & Panama, the Las Vegas monorails, and shuttle buses in numerous cities including those to UT football games. Enjoyed the convenience of them all.

But I have my doubts if the CoA and Capital Metro could run an extensive system with even a modicum of competence & fiscal responsibility.
Perhaps someday they will.
