But note that in retirement, you'll hopefully have a HS exemption and a senior exemption (Over 65, IIRC).  Those should drive down your tax burden pretty significantly.  You'll freeze your ISD taxes, and drops the net appraised value for other taxing units significantly.

But back to hating on Austin's BS:

I just realized when I voted today that even though I’m in Travis county I’m not subject to the property tax increase for the homeless problem. So I want to encourage you all to approve it so I don’t have to see any homeless people and don’t have to pay for it either. That’s a win win, for me and the homeless anyway.

3500 sq ft house is just a giant waste of money and time in terms of heating/cooling, furniture just to fill empty of life unused rooms, and cleaning. I guess if you are a fat ass who never leaves your house, maybe a 3500 sq ft house makes you feel better about yourself.

I'd rather have a 17-1800 3 bed 2 bath house at 6000 ft in the foothills of Colorado than have a 10,000 sq ft house in whichever shitty Texas town not named Austin.

When you live somewhere with amazing weather and a shitton of free shit to do, your urge for stupid materialistic shit goes away. I don't need that $80k truck with a 8 year payment and a 3,500 sq ft house filled with shit I'm never going to use to compensate for how miserable my life is.

This.  We have a big house right now - we raised kids in it, and we actually do entertain a good bit.  And the kids do still come home for extended visits.  So, great for now - more than we need, but it's fine for now.  But long-term?  Exactly what you said.  We'll likely end up where one of our kids lives anyway come retirement time (which almost certainly will not be Texas).  So....a nice, modest place to land, where we get to get out and about and do shit (being active helps keep you going and alive), AND it's not as much work or cost to maintain?  Yes please.

If we end up in Scotland or Germany or the NE US with a modest house/flat, we build some community, we get to see our grandkids, tell me how that isn't a win?

Texas and giant-ass houses on golf courses lifestyle is not great.

I just looked up a random house in Austin's NW Hills -- in 2023 the taxes were $16.8K and the appraised value was $927K.  So, a little higher but not far off the mark.

I stand corrected, but that is properly placed in the What The Fuck thread.  At least the taxes are being well used and there is no further reason to raise them.  So Austin has that going for it, right?    …..    Right?

Wait...you think throwing even more millions at the homeless will make them go away?

Bless your heart.

Throwing millions at the homeless will only attract more homeless to come here. Some homeless dudes in Pennsylvania will hear about all the free money we're giving out and hop on the next Greyhound to Austin. Some church in Abilene will hear about all the free millions we are giving out and send more homeless to Austin.

Shit is never ending.

They are literally being sent here by other jurisdictions and private prisons. Been happening for years. But yes, outside of some homeless camp eradication efforts by the State, Austin has a pretty tolerant reputation along with fair weather.

But who will pay the non profit six figure salaries?

Who is going to pay for the Mayor's $22 grain bowl at Flower Child?
