Yes

  • Bachelor of Applied Technology.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Bachelor of Applied Science in [Software Development, CyberSecurity]

Youngest child struggled in year 1 of college (not aptitude or capability - freedom, etc.) and I've encouraged him to consider ACC to get a restart.

My stepson just finished his ACC degree in cybersecurity.  It has taken him a very long time (he's 30) -- he's not a classic academic and his dad never helped me out with tuition, etc., but he's plenty smart and ACC served as a great school for him.  He's brushing up on some coursework he didn't have to take and then will start interviewing this summer.  We're super proud of him.

This is great to hear @jimmyjazz !  Congrats!  My youngest is 20.  He's not really shown much interest in going back (yet), despite my willingness to subsidize his housing and tuition from the 529 we've built up.  That's OK, as he'll figure it out at some point.  Just a different path than my other kiddos took.

You may not know yet, but how is the local economy receiving the Bachelors from ACC?

No idea.  For one thing, while I'm in tech, I am highly disconnected from the average Austin tech role.  I will try to post an update after he gets through some interviews.  I'm pretty sure he wants to stay in town, his girlfriend is a local schoolteacher.

One of my cousins was similar.  He was always very smart but just not into academics.  I think he was mostly into working on his old muscle car and smoking weed, to be honest.  He stumble-bumbled around for a decade after high school, working complete shit jobs, including his final 4 or 5 years working at the city landfill in Fort Worth.  Then finally one day when he was about 30, he decided he didn't want to be a burnout for the rest of his life, and he got himself into Texas A&M where he went straight through in 4 years and earned a software engineering degree.  Ever since, he's worked his way up from coding, into senior management, at a private software company in Dallas.  He made great money, got married, and actually just retired a couple of years ago, before age 60.

That got longwinded but I really love late bloomer stories like that.  They tend to make me happier than success stories about people you always expected to succeed regardless.  Anyway, best of luck to your stepson.

My oldest grandson, a graduate of Austin High, is 22 years old and has a substantial college tuition fund that he has not utilized.
He’s had two dead-end jobs, starting with making pizzas and now working at Brake Check.
He seems to be interested in becoming a “real” automotive mechanic, but hasn’t decided which path to take, whether to get on with a dealership training position or take some courses at ACC first.
His great grandfather did very well in that line of work for 4 decades starting a century ago.
We are hoping he makes a more positive move sooner rather than later.
(his gf just graduated from Texas State, so maybe she’ll be more persuasive than family members)

What do they have against windows?

The suicide rate amongst students who haven't fully bought in would be much higher with windows.

Working at the landfill prepared him well for College Station.

Community colleges started offering Bachelors degrees years ago (at least 10), but it started with Nursing. More and more are following by offering Bachelors degrees in things that most 4-years don’t. This is another way to attract students while keeping their higher ed costs low.

It’s also allowing community colleges to remove the word “community” from their name and just go by _____ College, which helps in lowering the stigma of community colleges compared to 4-years. (ACC can’t remove the word “community” from their name, though.)

Honest question for ACC: Why?

I mean, the Ags removed Agricultural & Mechanical from their name many decades ago, so now the A and the M stand for nothing...

Don't know, but keep in mind the acceptance rate has to be high enough to capture those candidates willing to stick their entire arm up a cow's rectum.

That’s one of the least uncomfortable things about Texas A&M.

Kangaroos. Went there my freshman year. Back in the 80s when the drinking age was 18. There was an on-campus pub that served Foster’s.

Same for me. Remember having to buy memberships to drink at local bars because Grayson County was dry.

That's because you're a sip.

Maybe a part but a feel good story needs an arc. One that all good aggies are familiar with even if they aren't aware.

To be a Cinderella it has to start low.

To be man in a hole you must ultimately return to where you were prior to the drop.

The aggies fell off a cliff and never recovered or what I'll term the Coyote "arc".

That's not feel good nor Cinderella. It's depressing or amusing depending on the viewer and the victim.

Poor company. Marcel’s gonna crash by October. Bad metaphor for a jet company.

There's a roller coaster manufacturer out there missing a golden NIL opportunity. Sign the whole fucking team up and take a team picture with their hands up right as they crest the peak. Of course they would probably have to retrofit a locomotive to get Elko's fat ass up there.
