I’m going to say that the elevator was not accelerating.

On the elevator thing, it does appear that the elevator was moving at a constant velocity, but it still screwed him.  If he were flipping on the ground he might have been fine.  But while he was in the air, the elevator continued to move toward him.  It's the equivalent of him trying to do a flip onto an elevated platform.  

We're all glad we got to see him try it, but his spine is not so glad.

I don't think that's correct.  If the elevator was moving at a constant speed, then the outcome would have been the exact same in the elevator as it would be if he was on solid ground.  He was moving at the same speed as the elevator when he began the flip.

 

Hopefully this thread doesn't get derailed into a plane on a treadmill debate.

His jump velocity would be added onto his standing velocity (so whatever speed the elevator was lifting at).  Bottom line is he just didn't have the hang time to pull off a flip.

AKTUALLY....

When he leaves the ground, he's "exposing himself" to gravity so he'll be moving at a different speed than the elevator. Imagine that he jumped out of it.

Wrong. He’s moving at the same velocity when he jumps as the elevator.  So both the elevator and the guy begin at the same constant velocity.  His jump parts the same initial acceleration upwards followed by gravitational acceleration towards the center of the earth as if he was jumping from a non moving surface. V zero is just zero in that case.

He's "exposing himself" to gravity when he jumps off of solid ground, and would be moving at a different speed than the ground in that scenario.  The big difference is he exposes himself while moving at the same speed up as the elevator.

The whole elevator was exposed to the same gravity.  The velocity of the lift coming up was working against the 9.8 meters squared that gravity works against the body and the lift.  Gravity didn't start or stop working before, during, or after his jump.  It was always working and always being acted against by the force of the lift moving upward.  Gravity didn't change so its action against the flipper didn't change anything.

Even if he’s moving upward at the same rate doesn’t the moving essentially increase the downward force he’s up against? Gravity + upward movement. Meaning he needs a stronger jump than if he was on the ground facing only gravity? He probably jumped with usual power and thus fail + lolz. Serious question, I’m not a physicist.
