That would have largely required multiple TDs by the opponents defense while the offense never scored more.  For multiple games.

From a 2nd year guy that has been educated on football his entire life.  On a team with an overall talent/experience advantage.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that.

There is some real rose tinted glasses here, Arch made some mind numbingly bad decisions during his first two starts it’s just that they were against ULM and MSU. Arch absolutely could have had a 2022 OSU or TCU meltdown, pressing too hard and trying to make plays in big games. Also something Quinn was actually good was recognizing pressure and setting protections. There were multiple times that Arch didn’t recognize the blitz and got absolutely lit up from the second level.

Troy Aikman didn’t win a fucking game his rookie year. He was pure trash.
When Troy wasn’t staring at his first option and probably throwing an interception, he was standing tall in the pocket and getting his shit packed and leaving the game with a concussion.
Steve Walsh won the one game that year and always looked more NFL ready than Troy. Walsh was obviously smarter and the game wasn’t too fast for him, but he didn’t have the physical attributes to be a top NFL QB.
If the Cowboys hadn’t brought in Norv Turner in 1991, Troy would never have been a Hall of Fame QB. Turner changed the offense to limit the damage of Troy’s weaknesses and highlight those strengths.

Pretty harsh on Cowboy Troy, but true. Rookie year was similar to Carr with the Texans. Both rookie years spent more time looking at the sky from the ground than on their feet.

Name me the youthful QB, or any QB, that has had multiple pick 6s/fumble TDs in the same game. It is not common.   The Aggies and Kentucky still don’t win if you give them another defensive TD.  Didn’t we have turnovers on our first posssessions versus OU and Vandy?  I guess Arch could have given up scores on those turnovers.

A TCU or OSU performance was not resulting in a loss.  Are you telling me a 2nd year in college Ewers, who skipped his final year of hs then whatever you call his stint at OSU would have him on the same level as a 2nd year Arch, having not missed his sr year and playing in the same offense?  That my friend is a reach.  Nevermind that as a team we are better now than then.

You cite MSU for Arch.  An independent source graded that performance as one of the top performances all year that took into account whatever negative plays you think he made.

ULM was his first start, right?  Undoubtedly amped up.  I believe those errors were early in the game and he settled into the game.

You know Leavitt is just as young as Manning, right?  Terrible pass to end but otherwise hung tough against a far more talented team.

By the way I’ve not once said put Arch in as starter.  I am pushing back on the notion that chances are good he loses a game or two.

If Johntay catches that perfect pass, Manning finishes something like 27-32 for 380 yards and 4 TDs.

It's still a bit puzzling that an obviously still-limited Ewers was seen by Sark as the better choice over Manning. At least, we suppose that's the case, although there is an under-current of some sort of "loyalty" to the starter, and/or a long-term message for future recruits. It seemed like the rest of the team tended to pick up steam when Arch entered the game, which I wouldn't think would have happened if their practice snaps had been less than inspirational.

The fact is, of course, Sark stuck with the starter. Some question whether that was best for the team. Ask Saban, right?

Quinn had 17 turnovers. That was probably his biggest issue last year. I once said Texas had a better chance of making the playoffs with Ewers, but Arch gave them a better chance to win a title. Reason for that is Arch could have had one of those terrible 1st time starter games, but also think he would have grown over the course of the season. That said Ewers had some ugly games (Georgia, OU, and Arkansas come to mind) and some absolute brutal turnovers that could have changed the course of the season (ASU and A&M come to mind).

I trying to come at this from the perspective of Sark. So the question becomes when do you bench Quinn? Texas was #1 and undefeated and statistically the most dominant team in college football going into the Georgia game. Quinn and Texas proceeded to get absolutely obliterated the first half and Sark does pull Quinn and Arch doesn’t do much better. Quinn goes back in the second half a Texas tries to close the gap but the first half disaster is too much to overcome. From the Georgia game till overtime in the SEC championship did Texas ever even trail for more than a single drive? In order for Sark to reasonably bench Quinn, Quinn would have needed to have another melt down that would have cost Texas the game or put Texas so far down that Sark would have had to bench Quinn and that just never happened. Could Arch have won us a title this year? I believe so but into order for that to happen Quinn would have had to leave after last year, and nobody though this time last year that bringing back Quinn a 3 year starter in our first season in the SEC was a bad idea.

You bench Quinn at the same exact moment you did but you never put him in again. It’s that simple. Quinn played like shit in multiple games after Georgia game. It’s not like he came back and was brilliant. The only game he was good in was Florida who was missing their entire secondary essentially

He has like a 90% sack rate once he was pressured and took his eyes down.

I think that that bullshit hit by Bama “Dallas” guy, that would have been illegal in the NFL, really fucked up Quinn.

He had some excellent games after that, but the knowledge that he could always be wrapped up and then drilled into the ground haunted him.

A positive is that that won’t happen in the NFL… if he sticks with a team long enough to make it into the field.

What a great point, and totally relevant.

It’s as relevant and has as much to do with reality as the comment Redfive made counting Johntay’s horrific drop to passing yards total by Arch. He didn’t catch the ball so it’s another, “if only this had happened” non-event.

Can we end the Quinn thread, as each of the last three seasons had a Quinn injury that sidelined him. Prior to each injury/season Quinn was amazing and bright lights ahead! 22 - Bama and etc, down to the ‘24 “self injury” (non contact). Who knows what he’d have done over his time on the 40?

He did realize about 18-24 months ago that his physique needed to change for the better, with competition right behind him, and he did. So close the last two years and he helped bring our program above where it’d been the previous decade+. I will always appreciate what he did for Texas.

So he was amazing for a total of 3.75 games? lol

I want this thread to outlive me.

The ol Quinn kicked ass in Q1 versus Bama in ‘22 always gets me.

Bama also had 10 points then struggled to get 10 more the remainder of the game.  So he didn’t have to face defensive adjustments.

And also, if in 2021, we could quit at halftime or end of Q1, we beat Top 10 - OU, OSU, and BU.  And Casey might be all American. We also beat future Super Bowl QB Purdy.  On the road, at night.

Up to that point in the Sark tenure, we often came out strong against good competition but struggled to finish.

WTF does that mean?  If you think he's a 3rd round prospect but you draft him in the 1st round, that's on you.  He obviously slipped way past round 3.  Nice try, Mrs. Ewers.

This sounds like the article with this headline: “Quinn Ewers’ agent blasts chickenshit explanation for QB’s NFL Draft fall

An NFL draft slide sometimes doesn’t come with clarity or a pinpointed explanation.

Agent Ron Slavin feels that was the case with his client and former Texas quarterback, Quinn Ewers.

Slavin told ESPN that he reached out to “half the league” the day after the draft to find out why Ewers had such a big slide.

The answer, he said, was “chickens–t.”

”They thought he was a third- or fourth-round pick, but too big of a name to be a clipboard holder,” Slavin told Archer. “Which I think is chickens-t.”

In other words, NFL teams thought that Ewers, who was the No. 2 recruit out of high school and was ranked No. 7 of the quarterback prospects by ESPN for the draft, was too big of a name to have as the development quarterback.

It’s one of the consequences discovered in the NIL era of college football.

https://nypost.com/2025/05/04/sports/quinn-ewers-agent-blasts-chickens-t-explanation-for-nfl-draft-fall/

So according to Quinn’s agent, he was too famous to be drafted sooner? Sounds like he needs a new agent ASAP. This whole article sounds like chickenshit. C’mon man…

Between this article and the ESPN.com article it seems pretty clear that Slavin sucks at his job.

Seems a bit pie in the sky.

@kristinewers would be my guess. I agree that Tua might be out of the league within a year, but only because his head is gonna soon resemble an avocado that is 3 weeks past ripe. The rest of that "analysis" is laughable bullshit.

Posted

If Quinn secures the back-up spot in Miami he will get starts due to Tua's propensity to ram his head into defenders and land on it when sacked.

The rest is putting good snaps on film.

There are plausible futures where he is out of the league in 4 years or has a 15 year career.

Most of his concussions are not from ramming his head into defenders but his head just simply hitting the ground. But your point remains.

Pretty much this. Once Sark put him back in, that was it...he was the guy barring injury or meltdown. The way they played in the 2nd half, even with Quinn, gave them a chance to come back. Arch may have had growing pains, but probably gives them a better shot.

like 90% of the people here felt the same way until about a week ago. the paradigm shift in this thread has been wild. for the last two years anyone who questioned or criticized QE was met with vociferous opposition followed by a bunch of pro-QE bs that would invariably get +15 rep in 20 minutes from the silent cadre of QE zealots who don’t post but who make their presence known by mass repping all pro-QE stances.

and then, suddenly, draft week happened, all of the experts publicly came out on national tv and said, “this kid doesn’t have it”, all of the nfl scout quotes about how bad quinn was were released, and then like 220 other dudes got drafted ahead of quinn, meaning he nearly was an UDFA, and just like that, we’ve gone from, “Quinn is our lord and savior and you are not allowed to say otherwise!” to, “man, wtf was sark thinking not benching quinn after the georgia game? it was so obvious. sark really fucked up.”

surreal.

Posted

it’s funny how people can be like, “yeah quinn’s got a great chance to start at some point next year because tua always gets hurt”, easily recognizing the clear pattern with tua (brain injuries), while completely ignoring the clear pattern with quinn ewers (he sucks at football and is scared to get hit). this is the dynamic here. it’s so easy to recognize (and come to conclusions based on) the flaws in every non-UT player or coach, yet when it’s one of our guys we just act like those glaring flaws don’t exist, or we make up a bunch of excuses for them.

quinn ewers is not good enough to play QB at Texas in 2024. had he stayed in college and transferred somewhere he would have “led” his team to a thrilling 8-5 record with a poor td/int ratio, underwhelming numbers across the board, and three games missed due to injury. but sure, he’s totally gonna be an nfl starter next year. yeah, and i’m running the anchor leg in the 4x100 for the jamaican sprint team at the next olympics. jesus christ people.

i’d say he has a better shot at taking a piss next to tyreek hill and having a freaky friday situation occur where QE leads the league in TD receptions and top end speed than he does at suddenly becoming good at playing quarterback. mike mcdaniel will put devon achane at qb and go full time wildcat before he lets quinn ewers try and play qb in the nfl in 2025.
