I love the take that because Ashton Jeanty, 90th ranked RB in the 2022 composite, is better than Jam Miller, we should not want a top 5 RB recruit. Should we flip the current 90th ranked RB from Old Dominion? I bet everyone here would be thrilled.

Right, but who on earth is saying that?

Recruiting: The latest

The Texas staff battling on the trail with the heavy hitters. OnTexasFootball provides the latest.

Texas and Derrek Cooper …

OTF 5-star RB Derrek Cooper will announce his decision July 20. The Longhorns are in the thick of the fight with six days until he announces.

In fact, Texas and Ohio State are receiving more chatter than Miami. Six days in recruiting is an eternity.

As OTF first reported when Cooper announced he had cancelled his previous announcement date, he is expected to make an OV to Texas during the season.

Tyler Atkinson and Texas …

Another 5-star update. The Loganville (Ga.) Grayson linebacker is a Georgia vs Texas battle with a decision expected shortly. He’s been in conversations with both staffs in the last few hours.

Oregon and Clemson have hats at the tab.

Texas will stay on top targets committed elsewhere …

The Longhorns aren’t going to back off top targets such as 4-star++ DL abd Georgia verbal James Johnson (Miami/Northwestern), 5-star and LSU commit EDGE Trenton Henderson , 4-star++ WR and Oregon commit Jalen Lott and 4-star++ OT and Michigan commit Malakai Lee. Those for sure will remain targets.

The implication from the poster above was that it's not worth recruiting top of the line backs out of the high school ranks and Jeanty was cited. I would agree with the sentiment if the staff was doing so at the expense of higher leverage positions (they're not), but if you look at the top backs in the NFL like Barkley, Bijan, Gibbs, Henry, CMC, there are a lot of blue chip, top 10 rated recruits. In any case, this staff has also gone after under recruited players like Brooks, Wisner and Rickey Stewart, so I don't think they're star chasing.

LOL. Rivals is just now releasing it's initial rankings for the 2026 class?

Are Rivals and On3 just consolidating into one service now? Does that mean ESPN's dogshit rankings will have additional weight in the composite rankings? That would be funny.

Edit: Looks like Rivals dropped Wesley from #6 to #24 nationally.

The drop is probably Rivals just realizing that he reclassed from 2027 to 2026. (please no Moro Ojomo jokes))

I’ve actually been using ESPN more lately because 247 and On3 aggressively block adblockers.

Landing Atkinson and Cooper would move Texas up to 6th in the national rankings.

It would also tie Bama for the most 5 stars nationally. Which would be funny for a year we're "showing restraint".

Rivals also dropped him from the number 1 Edge to number 7. I don’t understand how they drop players that far in the middle of summer, other than the anti-Texas bias that’s carried over from On3.

What’s released in the article included in the Dia Bell tweet/X is the “Rivals Top 25,” and it includes a whopping 6 offensive tackles. It seems none are named “Felix Ojo.”

One gets the feeling that, 20 years from now, Ojo might be a case study in some college business class.

The new Rivals/On3 rankings update was not very kind to Texas.

Dia Bell- #2
Richard Wesley- #24
John Turntine- #63
Smoke Matthews- #150 (big drop)
Kosi Okpala- #193
Chris Stewart- #240
Jermaine Bishop Jr.- #275 (big drop)

None of our 3 DTs are in the top 300 despite the fact that they are all ranked in the top 170 for 247sports.

Ojo dropped to #40 overall. I believe he was top 10 previously.

Spoiler

2) 5-star QB Dia Bell – Texas commit

School: Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage
Scout’s Take: “From an arm talent perspective, Texas commit Dia Bell is as good as anyone in the 2026 cycle. He’s the definition of a natural thrower. His ability to manipulate the football and throw consistently catchable footballs from multiple arm angles is a treat to watch. He can dice up defenses on Friday evenings and makes special throws. He’s someone that has tons of upside especially as he develops and fills out his frame down the line.”

I love that the scouting report thinks it best to focus on his arm talent, and doesn’t even mention his athleticism and escapability. What a great evaluation by the staff.

Jesus fucking Christ. Go back through the top backs by recruiting sites every year over the last decade. See how many are busts in the NIL sense of the word. The whole point is if you evaluate a guy to be in the elite area then pay him the big NIL out of HS. Anyone else is going to need time to develop and better off spending less NIL and relying on evaluation and development at that position. So you don't have million dollar RBs sitting the bench for 2+ years.

Chris Stewart- #240

Took my kids to work out with a group that included Chris yesterday.   I'm trying to remain objective, but I do think he's much better than that ranking.   What really shocked me was Carter (his brother).   Kid has been working and is looking like a player.  Actually looks better than Cobey Sellers did at this time last year.  After the Yaheim Riley take, I doubt he could play himself into an offer, but I wouldn't be shocked if the season shook out that way.

Couldn’t this same philosophy be applied to literally any position, go back and look through the top 100 for any year and they are littered with busts.

Top 7 and top 100 are very different things.

But the whole thing started because Burton kept saying Texas has to land a big money top RB in this class. And I disagreed unless they evaluate one of those guys to be truly elite among elite. Then it makes sense to pay big money. Everyone else will take time to develop and likely be a waste of high dollar NIL sitting the bench.

Usually if you’re in the top 100 you’re in the top 7 at your position

Presumably the staff has evaluated the running backs that they're after. I don't really understand your concern. What about our recruiting the last few years gives you the idea that this is as zero sum as you describe it and that we are potentially landing Cooper at the expense of a top-tier prospect at another position? In any case, I think you're really overstating the issue with blue chip running backs. Take a look at the draft the last ten years and the top picks at the position are littered with former 5 stars/high 4 stars, particularly the very top level guys.

Basically, what you are saying is the staff should evaluate well, because there are 5 star busts and some 3 star gems. This is well known. 5 stars get drafted around 60% of the time. 4 stars are 25% of the time. 3 stars gets drafted around 6%. A typical class will have around 32 5 stars with 19 drafted with 13 "busts". There are around 2000 3 stars in a class with 120 drafted and 1880 "busts". Easy to say stash a 3 star, save the NIL, and develop them, but the numbers tell you that it is much harder to hit on 3 stars compared to 5 stars.
