Eltife is good but he's no Frank Erwin.  We can talk when he starts driving around campus in a burn orange caddy.

"Get those long haired dirty nothings out of there!"

Yeah, I don't mean to short change Erwin. Definitely a legend. I still think Eltife came along at a time that was critical for UT football.

Different times require different qualities from different men. As a wise philosopher once said, "Sometimes there's a man ... sometimes there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there."

Frank Erwin had a couple of DUIs back in the day. Lawyer Roy Minton was a genius at getting the charges dropped.

At Texas baseball games when The Wild Bunch ruled, one of their traditions was to address Erwin when he was present. Before Texas would come to bat in the fifth inning, in unison, the bunch would say, "Hey Frank! It's the bottom of the fifth!" Of course, they followed by miming emptyin a bottle.

Erwin was good natured about it.

The Wild Bunch was the kind of tradition I like. So Texas.

Roy Minton was an interesting guy. Kind of an elder statesman in the Travis County criminal court world. I ran into him at the courthouse one time and he was kind of muttering to himself. I stopped him to say hi and see what had him pissed off. Apparently his client (arrested for a DUI) had a great video, made the client look completely sober. The client had refused to blow, however, and the DA wouldn't dismiss the charges. But what really pissed him off was she hadn't watched the video and didn't think she would any time soon. He was like "This DA is an unreasonable child. She's younger than my son and dumber to boot. I am not going to work with her." And I thought, good luck with that old man. Defense attorney don't get any say in which DA handles which case. Sure enough, a few days later she was off the case and the charges got reduced to "blocking a public way".

I was always impressed by that degree of pull. Made me realize that if I ever got in minor criminal trouble, I am hiring the oldest, meanest, most storied defense attorney in the county and just pay whatever it costs.

Yep. Roy Minton was a household word in that smaller Austin. Colorful character.

He was a much older lawyer when I was a young lawyer, so I didn't get to know him that well. He had a pretty good rant about gay marriage one time that I always appreciated, especially coming from a guy his age. Reminded me of that old school Austinite style of libertarian, who just aggressively defended people's right to do whatever they want as long as they weren't hurting anyone. Late in his career he took a case that I happened to have a personal interest in and it never sat right with me. Kind of soured my memory of him. I really can't blame him for defending someone, but I also can't shake my personal feelings about it.

But he was definitely a character who epitomized a by-gone era in the city.

Oh no, lawyer talk. With the number of lawyers on this site, I fear the site might be overwhelmed. Immamac better start the backup generators to power the internet tubes.

Yeah, it's like people constantly have to play "hold my beer" when it comes to attempting to plumb new depths of topic banalities here.

According to my uncle, Frank tended to "raise a glass" to the wild bunch when they hollered at him.

As for colorful lawyer, Percy Foreman is the only man I have ever heard of that got a man "Pete Thomas Scamardo" off of a murder rap because the jury believed Sam Dagillia deserved killing.

"The verdict in Pete Scamardo's trial was practically unprecedented. Jurors had no trouble believing he was responsible for the Degelia killing but let him off scot-free with seven years probation."

He initially got Woody Harrellson's dad off in the same trial with a hung jury, but his star witness fled the country before the retrial.

My older brother was obsessed with the Candace Mossler murder trial in Houston. That's were I heard Foreman's name the most. Definitely another legend.

My father once was an alternate juror for a Percy Foreman trial.  He couldn't remember much of the trial because he was amazed at the length of the ash on Foreman's cigar and the fact it never fell off.  After the trial he bumped into him and asked about his cigar, apparently Mr. Foreman wound a wire in his cigar so the ash would hold together and only bothered handling it when the prosecution was speaking.

Perry Minton represented Chris Beard in the family violence case. I assume they’re related, but don’t know for sure.

I’ve met him a few times, but never talked with him about his dad. I assumed it was his father, based on both of their reputations.

Many moons ago, I clerked at Roy Minton's firm for two years while going through law school, and I still have a tremendous amount of respect for him & his legacy.  His death was a big loss to the legal community in Texas.  He got consistently great results by being genuine, insightful as what makes people tick, polite, sharp as a tack, well-prepared, and down-to-earth.  I still regard my two years there as the other half of my legal education.

His older son, David, was also at the firm at the time, and he's another good guy.  I got from David one of my favorite lines to use when someone screws up -- "he just shat in his messkit."  David probably got it from his dad.  Perry was still in undergrad at the time, but he used to stop by the office occasionally.

This is not quite on the same level, but I am about to start day three of an open plea where the phrase "pocket pussy" has been used more times than I ever thought would happen in court room. Just for clarification, I am the lawyer not the defendant.
