Two years into an unlikely resuscitation of New Mexico State's football program, coach Jerry Kill is stepping down, sources told ESPN.

Kill's decision came in recent days, and the school has already found an internal replacement in wide receivers coach Tony Sanchez, sources told ESPN. Sanchez is the former head coach at UNLV.

Kill led New Mexico State to one of the sport's most distinct turnarounds in the last decade, as they went 17-11 in his two years as head coach. That included back-to-back bowl appearances and a 10-5 season in 2023, the school's first double-digit win season since 1960.

The New Mexico State team was set to learn the news on Saturday afternoon in a team meeting, per sources.

Kill is a veteran head coach with stops at Minnesota, Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois, among others. He also worked as an administrator and has been an assistant at Rutgers, Virginia Tech and TCU.

Sanchez is a former successful head high school coach in the Las Vegas area who served as UNLV's head coach for five years from 2015 to 2019. Sanchez went 20-40 in that time, with his tenure remembered best for key off-field strides in facilities and support to help modernize the program.

New Mexico State had lost both offensive coordinator Tim Beck and defensive backs coach Cliff Odom since losing to Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl on Dec. 16. The move to Sanchez could help keep continuity and momentum in both the staff and the program.

  • USC hires former Houston DC Doug Belk as DBs coach
  • Georgia’s void at DB coach is no more with the addition of USC’s Donte Williams, who replaces Fran Brown (Syracuse).

"Williams, 41, is regarded as one of the best recruiters in the nation and should thrive in Athens considering the level of in-state talent to work with."

Major Applewhite survived the cut...

Sources: South Alabama set for major staff shake-up

Kane Wommack continues to push the South Alabama program forward

JOHN BRICE       DEC 27, 2023

Coming off a resounding win against Eastern Michigan in his program's bowl game and a second consecutive winning season, South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack is making a handful of moves to keep pushing the Jaguars forward, multiple sources shared with FootballScoop.

On the heels of their 7-6 campaign, the Jaguars are parting ways with running backs coach Antonio Bradford, offensive line coach Gordon Steele and wide receivers coach Michael Smith.

Defensively, Wommack is also making a change with linebackers coach Will Windham.

Sources said that Wommack will immediately begin the process to find replacements for the quartet of openings.

USA has won 17 games in its past two seasons under Wommack, who has quickly ascended through the coaching ranks from his early days as an assistant for Jason Simpson at UT-Martin to his heralded work as defensive coordinator at Indiana University that preceded his arrival atop the South Alabama program.

The Jaguars are set to open their 2024 campaign at home against North Texas Aug. 31 before four weeks later traveling to face LSU inside Death Valley.

Wommack, who's already been pursued for other posts since his arrival at South Alabama, is transitioning into his fourth season atop the program. He earned a raise and contract extension after the program's record-setting 2022 campaign.

Auburn's Wes McGriff reportedly headed to Texas A&M

DOUG SAMUELS         6 HOURS AGO

Following their 31-13 loss to Maryland in the Music City Bowl to drop to 6-7 on the year, Auburn is reportedly losing a defensive member of their staff.

Wes McGriff, who coached the secondary for the Tigers, is heading to Texas A&M to join Mike Elko's staff as defensive backs coach, per multiple reports.

The 2023 season marked McGriff's third stint on The Plains, previously coaching for the program in 2016 and again from 2019-20.

McGriff had previous recent experience coaching the secondary at Louisville and Florida and served as the defensive coordinator at Ole Miss for the 2017-18 seasons.

Earlier in his career he spent time with the New Orleans Saints, and with programs at Miami and Vanderbilt.

That doesn’t seem like a good hire

It’s not

In the wake of devastating home loss at to Mississippi State, Ole Miss has announced that its parted ways with defensive coordinator Wesley McGriff, per Rebel Grove’s Chase Parham.

This should come as no surprise to anyone who has watched the Rebels play defense over the past two seasons. Ole Miss finished 113th in defensive S&P+ in McGriff’s first season and rank 109th in this year. The unit never gained its footing under McGriff’s watch, looking slow, out of sorts, and unable to execute game in and game out. There is no hiding that the defense has been an issue for the past three seasons, it was on full display for the entire nation to see for 12 weeksin 2018.

Unless you’re an aggy, that is 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

What an epic staff Elko has put together.

The AFCA Convention opens in earnest Sunday in Nashville; it's long been viewed as a job-seeking and job-filling event, though the college football calendar has been greatly accelerated into earlier changes in recent years.

Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Narduzzi and the Panthers are moving on from offensive line coach Dave Borberly, running backs/special teams coach Andre Powell and, as FootballScoop's Doug Samuels previously noted, also parting with Tim Salem, the Panthers' former tight ends coach.

Pitt already has added Kade Bell as its new offensive coordinator.
Narduzzi is seeking to get Pitt back on track after a stunning 3-9 campaign in which the Panthers won only twice in ACC play, a mere two years removed from an ACC Championship.

$2.5M for a DC. If you would have asked me who the DC at Mizzou was last season, I wouldnt  have been able to tell you. I'm sure he's a fine coach, but gotdamn....

Ridiculously outrageous salary aside, his side of the ball is a big reason Missouri had a great year.  He's been there 2 years - big improvement since 2021.
Below is 2021-2022-2023.

Fired by Manny Diaz too.  I’m sure it’ll work out.

Miami has been an absolute mess since Larry Coker got bounced and I think we've seen enough of Diaz over the years to understand how that may not have been the most stable coaching room/staff.  Manny also hired him twice - at LaTech and Miami.  Big Texas connections - Beau Baker's brother, GA at Texas, went to Arkansas State w/ Harsin, La Tech and Miami w/ Diaz. Even in LSU's worst recent season in 2021, the top 2 tacklers on the team, by a WIDE margin, were LB.  I'm inclined to believe he's a solid upgrade from House until proven otherwise.

I don't know anything about Baker, but Mizzou had talent and experience this year that probably made his job easier. They have 3 or 4 guys on defense who could get drafted and a few more on offense. I assume they will revert to their mean after this season. Baker will have talent at LSU though so who knows. He seems like a decent coach, but that's a crazy salary.

Interesting...

CONVENTION SPEAKER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Pass Game Coordinator - Ra'Shaad Samples - Arizona State: One of the fastest rising coaches in the profession, Samples has coached with the Rams in the NFL and has learned from some of the game's brighest offensive minds
  • OC - Brennan Marion - UNLV: The Go-Go offense will be the topic for Marion, who has blazed a unique path with an offense unlike anything else in college football. His trademark offense helped the Rebels win 9 games this past fall in a breakout year.

Veteran defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, who just finished his third stint at Alabama under Nick Saban, plans to retire from coaching, sources told ESPN.

Steele, who turns 66 in March, just completed his 40th year in coaching, including 13 years in the SEC. Steele was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2017 as the top assistant in college football while the defensive coordinator at Auburn.

Alabama was second in the SEC in scoring defense this season and tied for 16th nationally (allowing 19 points per game).

Steele spent the 2022 season as Miami's defensive coordinator before returning to Alabama to be the Crimson Tide's defensive coordinator in 2023. Steele has been a defensive coordinator for 12 of his years in coaching at five different schools -- Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, LSU and Miami.

A former player at Tennessee, Steele has coached under some of the biggest names in the sport. In addition to Saban, Steele has worked under Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne, Dabo Swinney and Johnny Majors. Steele also coached in the NFL as linebackers coach for the Carolina Panthers from 1995 to 1998 and was Baylor's head coach from 1999 to 2002, where he was fired after going 9-36 in four seasons.

Saban now has three openings on his coaching staff. Coleman Hutzler, who coached outside linebackers and special teams, left to be Mississippi State's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Holmon Wiggins, who coached receivers, left for a job at Texas A&M to be co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach.

Coaches and players REALLY need to visit College Station before commiting to them. This is getting out of hand and is embarrassing.
