Yeah…in this country, the only performance measures implemented would be “how many people that I hate did you hurt?” Ban free school lunch? Target met. Divert billions to deport Dreamers? Target met. Put up barriers to commerce for blue states? Target met.

Come on. Even you know that’s just a recipe for partisan fuckery.

Not for nothing, none of those things matter to the deficit. The only things that do are social security, Medicare, Medicaid and the military, along with the interest payments on the debt itself. And the REALLY fun part is that if you just make wholesale, indiscriminate cuts to those things the deficit probably increases a bit because tax revenues decrease.
So what we need is a strategic unwinding of the budget deficit and a reallocation of spending that reduces cost but not necessarily spending  in a transformative way.

and now step back to the real world, look at that task, and realize that your pay scale means that your absolute best-case candidates are John Cornyn and Colin Allred. Or Roger Williams and Julie Oliver. Or Steve Daines and whatever his name was.
And your worst case is Lauren Boebert and Tommy Tuberville and Ted Cruz.

So far.

What if, and believe me this is a hypothetical.....but what if we just decided to give the rich another tax cut? Would that do anything for you?

Then there are the crooks.  Remember "Duke" Cunningham?  He lived on a defense contractors yacht.

A number of them live in their offices. Blow up mattress. Shower in the congressional gym.

Quinn is a dufus for

a) unironically wearing a tie bar in the year of our Lord 2024; and

b) a tie bar with anyone's name on it;  that it's Trump just takes it to 11.

And, it's not really surprising that doltish 18-22 year-olds vote Trump.  The distressing part is the actual grown adults.

I understand what you’re saying. It’s certainly true that their identity has been a lever to separate you from your rights, and even though they haven’t gained anything from your loss, your loss is real and more existential than theirs.

But (and I’m not defending anybody here) it’s important to keep in mind that the vast majority of straight young white men have worse prospects and a more impoverished existence on almost every level than you do. And unless people like you can find the empathy to separate the pimps from the tricks, you’re going to wind up contributing to your own marginalization, or at best not making it better.

Why do you think I continue to cut them slack? I'm not stupid. This is a message board.

One of the very few things keeping me above SOME young white men is my nursing degree, which is something literally almost every one of them could achieve if they were willing to do "women's" work.

Not above *some,* and not the degree per se. Your profession, the mobility snd options it affords you, and the talent and work it took to enter and succeed in it keeps you above almost *all* of them.
It’s really  important to remember that.

Lmao Quinn is a public figure who has made more money over the last few years than I have ever made. He can take it. He doesn't give a fuck, I promise. I'm glad he played well today.

Will you feel better if I say that his political beliefs make him look like a piece of shit? Is that enough of a distinction without a difference for you, Rex?

Summer before I came to UT I dated a 17 year old from Watauga who danced at Wild Orchid and Babydolls, and she was gorgeous. Stunning. I mean, she looked like a blond cross between Ava Gardner and Traci Lords.
Unfortunately, she had had a very, very hard adolescence. She was basically a sweet, goofy girl who was processing a lot of trauma with no support, loved animals and really wanted to reconcile with her mom, which she did that summer and when I left for Austin I hoped things would get better for her.
Recently I looked her up on Facebook and it seems like her life didn’t  turn out very well- substance abuse, violence, troubled relationships, health issues, etc. She’s probably heavier than she was by 75 pounds, missing several teeth and also apparently involved in some pyramid supplement and life coaching type businesses. I hate to say so, but it’s embarrassing stuff.

Anyway, this was 1992 but I remember she looked down on Southlake kids.

Yeah, there's something kind of pernicious about these latter-day D-FW exurbs.  I guess its those with new money get in early on a fancy subdivision before it really takes off, then some bigger money comes in for various reasons (proximity to the airport for Southlake), including familiarity with it as a trashy burb in its prior existence.  And then the worst characteristics of both new and old money, rural dipshits and more urbane privileged, mix and amplify.

Also, you got around.

Man, if you're raising boys I hope you're not feeding them this victim poor me bullshit. Young white men don't have it harder than anyone else - they've simply got dealt the same hand as everyone else. If that's too tough for them, maybe they should get some bootstraps and pull on em. That's as much help as anyone outside the executive class gets.

Like, what the fuck? White people have it hard in America? That's fucking news to me.

Poor people have it hard. Young white men are not used to being more poor than not, and they're finding out they have to try in this world to move out from mom and dad's.

Impoverished existence? Wow lol.

I think his point is that, generationally, the young, men in particular, are significantly worse off than preceding generations due to the wealth/income gap and asset inflation.  There's less room for error than there's been in quite some time.  That may apply less to white men than women or men of color, etc., but I think it's broadly true.

No, Bozo pretty clearly stated that young white men have it harder than others and are "impoverished". Nothing to do with wealth inequality in the words he wrote, so I'm not sure why you're trying the southern strategy line on me of "it's not race, it's economics!"

It's true of everyone. And I definitely agree that there is a crisis within men in the modern world. But the solution is not to regress. And that's pretty much the only solution offered by anyone who matters

First, I’m not raising boys. My wife and I raised two sharp, capable young women. Second, there’s nothing poor or even middle about me. I’m very successful, affluent, and healthy as a result of fantastic luck compounded by hard work and focus, and lot of help.  I don’t fall into the “almost all” category. Our lives are exceptional on almost every level and there’s nothing more irritating to me than people in my shoes poor mouthing or referring to themselves as even middle class. We are not and inshallah we won’t be.

31 minutes ago, Captainant said:

That’s exactly my point- most people are dealt a bad hand. At least half (by definition) of them are below average on one or multiple levels - health, height, talent, upbringing, intelligence, appearance, access to opportunities, etc. most of the rest are bunched of in a tight group we thing of as the middle but are really the above-average-but-not-enough-to-matter, and most of the rest don’t catch the happenstance breaks that really matter.

The fact that you conflate “impoverished existence” with economic poverty primarily or “poor people” tells me that the rent for shirt with your name on it has never in your life come out of your paycheck, so I’ll try to explain this as succinctly as possible, ahem:

EVERYONE HAS IT HARD IN AMERICA.

I did not say they had it harder. I said that almost all lead a more “impoverished existence” than safe sex does, and that doesn’t even seem controversial. Good profession, rich inner life, integrity, sense of humor and irony, brains? Are you saying that almost all young white men don’t lack those things?

No. My point is that you have a better life than the vast majority of them do or ever will. You mentioned all the “mediocre white men” in your field. They aren’t mediocre. Those are way above average white men. Would you switch lives with any of them?
Now imagine the below average ones.
