I wouldn’t count on that. Turning Point USA will get Mr. Erika Kirk into at least second, but probably first.

Erika Kirk is not going to have much staying power imo. Some closeted white dude in TP USA will quietly elbow her aside when her mourning tour is complete

So now their flavor of the day is the term “heritage American.

These people are weird and they need to be punched in the face.

They do know that even the "heritage Americans" were filthy immigrant invaders from a certain point of view...right?

Without Googling, I'm gonna guess that this means WASPy white families who came from Europe many generations ago.  You know, the people who built this country.

And it does not mean black people descended from families who were brought here against their will 200 to 400 years ago to build this country.  And it definitely doesn't mean anyone descended from the Chinese families who came here to build the railroads over 150 years ago.  And it obviously does not include Hispanic immigrants who've been building this country, literally, for generations.  It means the German, Irish, Italian, and English immigrants who built this country.

Also, if you are white and your family just got here, like, ya know, the First Lady, or Elon, you're a "Heritage American."

That about right...?

Too many kids were taught govt / history by coaches that didn’t give two shits about either.

The fb coach that taught HS government back in the 90’s just let us watch “All the President’s Men” the majority of the semester when he wasn’t talking about ‘Nam.

I liked that class. But, I get what you’re saying.

I tried to get one of our coaches to take the test BEFORE we started the chapters and see if he could beat any of us on it, with a wager of extra workout reps in the balance.  He never took us up, and he absolutely would have lost because he was the biggest dumb jock in the history of coaches teaching history.

Best math teacher I had until college was also a coach though too.  That sumbeech should NOT have been coaching.  He should have been making more kids love mafs.

I can't recall why, but I took government in summer school with a football coach who had just moved to Texas from New Mexico. He announced that fact on the first day of class, stating something to the effect of: "Well, I'm supposed to teach you kids about Texas government, but I just moved here from New Mexico, and all I can say is, 'We have one.'" Then, I think we just moved on to US government.

You can have a property interest in a lease for purposes of inverse condemnation. I wonder if they've thought through that aspect.

Not a lawyer, but it does seem to amount to a "taking."

Well the "adults in charge" in the current administration are Muppets so I'm guessing they have not thought about that aspect...

They're governing like there will not be a next election.

You only need to start making the case that the next election will be rigged by your opponents so therefore we have to temporarily pause elections. Even Republicans that realize this is bs will not speak up because they will want to remain in power. You might actually get someone like Rand Paul to disagree but he wouldn't actively do anything to stop it.

If Dems overperform in '26, Trump will use that as grounds that the fix was in. Perhaps disband Congress as invalid and that he will get back to us when he has a new plan about future elections.

Counter-counterpoint - we're reverting back to the coastline defense system we used when America was great.

And I'm going to tell you--the measure of the compensation due is really interesting for those of us who do this kind of work.  The government is aboslutely going to argue that the loss is just the value of the lease, which is to say the lease payments that the lessor doesn't have to make.

The problem with that is that the government is depriving businesses of the entire value of the business.  And there is a (somewhat obscure) line of cases starting with Kimball Laundry, which holds that when a taking results in the elimination of a going concern, the just compensation is the going-concern value of the business.  When we're talking about a wind farm, that's going to be in the billions.

So congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer--the Trump Administration not only deprived you of a bunch of government revenue, but is going to cost the government billions in takings liability.

SCOTUS will save us, unless those projects are owned by friends of Trump in which case the gvt will voluntarily pay without court action.

Nah--this won't get to SCOTUS anytime soon.  By the time it gets to the, it'll be the Newsom Administration's problem.

If it did, it would be a helluva thing.

Takings have been a big Bundy-wing conservative shibboleth for a while.  The cognitive dissonance on the court would be audible from here.  Not that that would stop them from ruling in Trump's favor.

I think the Heritage American thing is too online and will burn itself out fairly quickly. Even where I’ve heard it, there’s lots of disagreement on what it means. I’ve seen lots of arguments that “Foundational Black Americans” are in, and arguments that they are out (I don’t think “Foundational Black Americans want to be in the “prestigious” club, so there’s that).

It seems to be mostly driven by the subset of people who in most previous generations would respond as “American” with no modifier to a census, and when asked about ancestry would rattle off a vague, mostly forgotten admixture of northwest European origins.

So there’s a lot of irony and frankly sadness around the movement. A group of people who have long railed against “hyphenated American identity” are now creating their own hyphenated identity. Fairly pathetic shit.

On the flip side, the more extreme wing of identitarian culture warriors have argued that “American” as an identity is mostly meaningless beyond strict legal definitions (at best) or bad and exclusionary/hostile at the worst, and that identity is the salient feature of civic existence, are now confronted with the problem of a subset of people who have always felt they are “just American deciding to agree with them that being American is in fact exclusionary. And since there’s not another club for them to join…….

A policy-led Republican Party had folks questioning if the party was doomed for eternity prior to Trump saving them from the ashes.  Their shit is supremely unpopular when separated from the greatest carnival barker our nation has ever seen.

You can already see evidence of the political dorks positioning for a post-Trump world, and assuming his coalition will carry over.  Bold strategy, Cotton!

The only way I've ever heard that term previously is when people would talk about "heritage indian firms" in the context of tech consulting (e.g. Infosys or Tech Mahendra, etc.)

In related news our new, badly needed frigate is just going to be a Coast Guard cutter painted gray with no vertical launch system. Appropriate for our new ambition of puttering about the Carribean and absolutely WASTING homemade drug boats.
