A lot of information and who knows what’s true but some hope - one of our good friends daughters is named in tha note that Cajun posted and we just heard that the east lands and the 26 young girls are stranded on an island but safe waiting for helicopters to pick them up. I worry about posting inaccurate info but hopeful this is correct

We are hearing the same. I know many of the couples with girls in that notice, and I’m currently with a couple that has a daughter at Mystic and son at La Junta (thankfully both accounted for). We heard that news about 30-45 mins ago, just hoping that it’s true.

no cell coverage is a selling point for these camps. make the kids disconnect
if flood gauges hit a certain point, sirens need to be going off or something

My wife works 12 hours a week at Johnson City ISD, and that redneck place tests the flood siren every day at noon.

There are some swift water teams from San Antonio here. And I hear helicopters, but can’t see them given the weather ceiling. We’re going to do what we can from the ground. There’s plenty for us to do, but, unless I have a Zodiac or a helicopter, my hands are tied.

How fucking difficult would it be for town and county officials to get out ahead of the flooding, drive to the camps and tell them to clear out?  This just feels like a huge fuckup.  I get the "cry wolf" concern but at some point the adults have to act like adults.

There are hundreds of campers and camp employees at each of these. How many large busses do you think are available at a moments notice to evacuate an isolated group like this for a 100+ year flood event? Are they supposed to hike up the flooded highway?

I was very good friends at UT with a girl in the family that mostly drowned that night. I think she, her husband and kids and maybe her sister survived. Everybody else drowned — both her parents, BIL and her nieces/nephews. It’s still upsetting to think about.

The bodies of the two youngest kids in the house were never found.

Particularly at night. You can’t. I won’t be critical of how they handled.

Im hearing the major flooding is below the Canyon dam.  Any truth to that?  Too bad for those folks if so.

I highly doubt this.  I live less than a mile from the dam.  It hasn't rained that much here at all.

I was in Wimberley during the Memorial Day flood several years ago, and I can tell you this is easier said than done. That downpour came out of nowhere and the rate at which the river rose was incomprehensible. By the time the weather reports/warnings started coming out there was little first responders and officials could do - though I will say they were all over the place doing what they could.

The camps we’re talking about are all upstream. That’s not to say there isn’t flooding downstream too, but looking at the radar I don’t think you’re getting accurate info.

My daughter is a counsel at a different camp but has a bunch of friends at those camps. She got a text confirming a lot of this. Don’t know how to blur out identifying info so no screenshot but Dick was found w 5 girls 5 miles downstream

6 girls and a counselor still missing 😢

Our kiddos are at Camp OTX outside of Bandera this week. They aren’t near a river…they have a little man made lake that dams upstream of a tributary (at best). They are communicating that everything is fine there and I believe it knowing how it is situated but reading about these other camps is making me sick to my stomach.

The major roads were still open this morning. At least, my daughter went through the area earlier today on her way to Marfa; here is her text at the time:

😭

And, we will never know if warning sirens could have saved lives, just like when the Blanco flooded Wimberley. We will be able to gauge the effectiveness of warning sirens the next time Wimberley floods. And, Texas’ rivers in the Hill Country will flood.

Y'all are right, I was assuming the heavy rain could be forecast & timed to some degree, but this would seem to indicate otherwise (just an example gauge):

La Junta has been adamant that all are accounted for. They would be creating a shit storm if they weren’t telling the truth to parents right now. Let’s not spread unsubstantiated information here. There are lots of parents with kids at these camps that are already worried enough.

The video of the cabin being washed away posted a few times was from La Junta. It was taken down because parents were pissed that the guy was tweeting so much about it.

Waldemar, Loma Linda (Mo Ranch), and Stewart all sit on the north fork (I think)of the Guadalupe.
Mystic, Heart of the Hills, Arrowhead, and La Junta all sit on the south fork. I have no idea if it makes a difference, but I’m pretty sure they collide right at Hunt. Hence, La Junta getting absolutely pummeled.

Tragic. Prayers for all.

Our ranch is 20 miles south of Mystic.

Please don't rush to judgement of officials at the various agencies. The most rain fell west of here, and water levels rose 20-30 feet in minutes. Cell phone service is spotty at best all over the Hill Country, much worse during heavy thunderstorms. Driving on the curvy, hilly, tertiary roads is hard in broad daylight, the faster you go the more nauseous you get. At night, in the rain, with every low water crossing full of running water, it is extremely dangerous, and a tin star on your chest doesn't change that. We drove the backroads from Kerrville to Utopia in 2004, the one and only time, and I've probably driven between those towns 50 times in 20 years.

18" of rain in 24 hours, in the Hill Country is catastrophic.

I don’t know what you’re on about. We have a good friend that went to Waldemar. Her daughter was my daughter’s counselor. Her son is a counselor at La Junta, and a Longhorn. He spent the evening fishing boys out of cabins. He confirmed that video was La Junta.

Hard to get ahead of this type of flooding. Unreal.

Looking back at the radar, this storm exploded and dropped an unprecedented amount of rain at an unprecedented rate at 2am. Sometimes it’s just bad luck and nature.

yeah i don't think people understand. this was literally a wall of water crashing down river.  think tsunami though the river valley.

or for gulf coaster like myself, a unexpected hurricane storm surge with zero warning at 2am.

What’s a bit odd is that the forecasts seemed to totally miss this risk. There was talk of rain, mostly w of 35, but not of any major flood risk. It’s not common for forecasts to miss so widely these days.

Those names are definitely accurate. And they’re not teenagers, they are 8/9 year olds. Just hoping that the information that a bunch have been found safe is true.

can we crowdsource this retard for posting so much disinformation?

Could explain why there are 16 or so girls in the cabin but only 5-6 are missing. I also have good information that one of the missing ones that I know has been confirmed found downstream alive.
