They'd have to push her through in two to three months during an election season or possibly a lame duck session after losing the Senate. It's going to be hard.

It's either that or potentially lose the seat forever.  If the Senate flips, and you can't get Trump's nominee seated before the New Congress, it's gone until 2020.   Schumer will tell Trump that Merrick Garland is the only nominee the Senate will consider.

If there's one thing we know the GOP loves, it's pushing through something hard during questionable circumstances.

As an aside, the politization of the Supreme Court is shameful. Need to do SCOTUS term limits to start to reverse it.

That's right.  You can use the Kavanuagh thing to gin up your base for the mid terms while also shutting the Dems up on the MeToo front with a conservative female nominee. You tell Collins she's just going to have to swallow this vote, just like Heller had to on Obamacare if she ever wants to get a cush job on K street.

Collins is going to step down before the 2020 election if Mills wins the governorship in Maine this year so she can run against her in 2022.  Collins was *this* close to giving up her seat to run for the governorship in 2018 already.  She wants to go home and serve.

I could see that. LePage has frozen every aspect of Maine politics for the last 8 years. I know she kinda hates it down here.  Which you'd expect from somebody from Caribou.

Yep.  I don't think she's going to swallow any shit sandwiches from McConnell/Trump that would cost her good will and taint her 2022 governor bid.  She might as well keep on the fence until it's off the table (after midterms), at which point the shit sandwich is in the trash or the GOP picks up an extra seat or two, giving her cover to vote against before she peaces out.  If GOP loses the Senate, she's probably announcing her retirement very quickly thereafter.  If they keep the Senate, maybe she strings "will she or won't she" a little longer.

But she is probably the biggest target by the Dems in 2020, then Corey Gardner in Colorado and the McCain seat.

Jeff Flake has a dubious track record of almost always falling in line with Trump.  I don't trust him.  It's perfectly reasonable to criticize him for his track record and question his honesty.

He, along with Ben Sasse and Bob Corker, form the core of the GOP Serious Concern Caucus.

But when Jeff Flake speaks out he's just playing politics and no one likes that.

C'mon man, Flake has the ability to swing the Senate. Context matters.

I do wish Avenatti would stick to his lane though. If he's not making up his new allegations, he needs to show some cards quick. The shameless self promotion was somewhat ok when he was simply representing a porn star who was fine with it. I don't know how I'll feel if he's behaving the same way in his representation of gang rape victims.

I agree. Nomination pulled on Wednesday.

He's at the point where his regular position is now in jeopardy. Probably will remove himself from consideration citing family reasons.

Especially if the prospect is losing to Chellie Pingree, who she loathes personally.

I’m not trying to debate, derail, or defend Flake for his record here.

However, Flake making those speeches on the Senate floor basically saying Trump is acting like Stalin with his “enemy of the people” shit and acknowledging that he and his fellow GOP senators were complicit in Trump’s assault on the truth was a moment of political sacrifice.

He gained nothing politically from doing that so why did he pay lip service to the truth and democracy?

We may never know.

Quote

Montgomery County investigators confirmed Monday they’re aware of a potential second sexual assault complaint in the county against former Georgetown Prep student and Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

While investigators weren’t specific and spoke on background, they said they are looking at allegations against Kavanaugh during his senior year in high school after an anonymous witness came forward this weekend.

This would potentially bring the number to four women accusing Kavanaugh of wrongdoing and comes after Deborah Ramirez, a former Yale college student, stepped forward this weekend to accuse Kavanaugh of exposing himself to her in college, and after attorney Michael Avenatti tweeted out a message saying he represents a woman with “credible information regarding Judge Kavanaugh and Mark Judge.”

When Kav started his own acceptance speech claiming that he was the result of the most thorough and exhaustive search in the history of evar! i knew something was wrong with the guy. Kav is a political hack. He was a fixer for the Republicans who taught other candidates how to beat the process. He was a slimeball who was obsessed with Clinton's personal habits and random conspiracy theories. The guy is the epitome and culmination of everything wrong with the Republican party today and over the last 20 years.

Gorsuch? eh, I disagree with some of his policies but dont have an issue with him being on the court. I wish he wouldnt attend political forums or lunches  and stay above it a bit more but I think that will happen naturally over time.

What do you mean he gained nothing politically?  He's already positioning as anti-Trump for a run to the White House . . . even though he's been in lockstep with Trump the whole way.

He gained everything he wanted politically with those moves.  You are living proof.

The hard part iafter the election is the GOP have no ability to lean on the Red State Democratic Senators who are in tight election races. Regardless of whether Heitkamp and Joe Donnelly have won or lost, they DGAF after the votes are counted.

This. And Doug Jones is basically the only D vote they could hope for after midterms, as he is up in 2020.

I’m in a very minuscule minority that wants a healthy Conservative party with actual values and principles.

Even if Flake was pandering to the intellectual conservatives, it was pandering that we need now more than ever because the Republican Party’s identity has become one of nihilist absolutism.

It’s just ashame Flake is essentially the canary in the coal mine and both side despise him.

The transparency of this smear is it's greatest weakness.  If they pull Kavanaugh, the next confirmation will be a circus too, especially having proved that it works.

McConnell's cravenness with regard to Merrick Garland guaranteed that this was going to be a bare-knuckle fight. He asked for it.

It won't. In fact, his clearly partisan behavior will get worse over time, as it would with any of the alternatives the GOP would put forward if Kavanaugh is withdrawn. The fact that Kavanaugh is even worse should in no way make anyone think that Gorsuch or any other conservative judges are not focused primarily on winning partisan battles. It's just that his long history as a GOP ratfucker makes him exceptionally awful in that regard.

I don't see how Kavanaugh can actually respond to some of the questions related to Avenetti's latest accusations.    It could lead to some unique exchanges.   A senator will ask Kavanaugh if he knows what a train is, and can he describe his definition so that the group can be on the same page.  Then ask about his involvement.

And if he comes up with the standard "I don't recall", that can lead to some followup questions in regards to what level of sexual activity it takes for him to remember.

If some or all of these allegations are true, Kavanaugh's only possible escape is if he blames substance abuse for past behavior and that he's turned his life around to Jesus Christ.  Then beg for forgiveness.   If he still drinks, this may not be an option as it won't seem genuine.

If they were, Brett Kavanaugh would be confirmed already.

Guarantee that Trump and other GOPers are telling McConnell and Grassley that they screwed up by not pushing forward with the confirmation last week.  Trump wouldn't have delayed anything.  And if the purpose was to confirm Kavanaugh at whatever cost, Trump would be right.

Jane Mayer and Ronan Farrow aren't coordinating with Dems in the Senate.

Yes, that's the real exchange.  That got lost in the responses because a few minutes later the story about the second accuser was released.

Depends on if your "friend" spent any time in the Dallas Cowboys bar and wether or not his sancha had an adams apple.

Yeah sorry to derail a thread so chalk full of vetted truths and pithy insight.  But the KEG club thing kept coming up and couldn’t help myself.

Honestly did not mean to take us on a tangent and dropped a dozen clues this was about 90210 characters.  And yes, we are middle aged men but if you dated any girl in the 90s, you’re lying if you say you never watched that show.  Fuck, now I got a handful of posters demanding I come forward with what I know about kavanaugh sexually assaulting someone at the Peach Pit........after dark.
