What is also instructive is where our players end up. If a guy leaves that you once worried about and he ends up at a shit program that is losing all of its own good players to the portal, that should be a tell that maybe losing him was not that big of a deal.

Agree again. And I wanted to keep LL.

Good tweet. People need to wrap their heads around the fact that quality depth is a thing of the past.

The teams with existing quality depth look worse off than the new money guys this cycle because the new money guys didn’t have any quality depth to get extorted by/cut loose and can focus solely on new adds.

Recruit 10-12 elite high schoolers at positions of need + some cheap 3 star flyers and specialists, hope half stick. Retain starters only, fill all depth and a few remaining positions of need through portal

With the two Michigan OL, you figure it was much easier to stay. Whittingham is a great hire and brought his OL coach from Utah. And I would not also be at all surprised if they didn't plant seeds of doubt about Flood with the shit show he fielded for most of the season. While the money difference reported is substantial, their offers to stay are still a lot and could sell on draft potential.

Look, you and @RGBIII could very easily be correct, and my skepticism is more for the OTF guys who I think are more apt to repeat what the SID wants them to say than to admit either ignorance or poor performance by the Texas coaches selling opportunity here.

That said, we're talking about Michigan and OSU, and I just have a hard time imagining a school like Michigan saying to two starters that they've developed and want to keep "we know Texas has a lot of money on the table--what do you think about staying here for 60% of it?" Why would you take that chance?

And on that note, if that is in fact true, I want Sarkisian to hire whoever it is that is pitching it successfully to run point on our negotiations.

That evaluation risk makes having a strong scouting/recruiting department all the more important.

Shit is fucking costly.

Going forward there is absolutely no reason to play a bowl game if you're not in the playoff.

Turns out the Catholics got it right.

You have guys that have 1 good game like Barnes and Clark, and they don't use that as development, they use it as a platform to ask for 4x what they would normally sign for.

It does no good for us to provide a showcase when it's going to be used against us. No spring game, no bowl game. It's counter-productive.

This sucks. And to be honest, I don't get it. I mean, I get it for Zina. He's been patient, he's shown flashes in limited time, and we go out and chase an Edge in the portal, which is the LAST position we need. We need a fucking QB more than we need another edge. And here we have a relatively cheap player who we have developed, ready to take the next step, and we go after portal guys. At some point, fuck, play the guys you've recruited and developed who seem fucking good.

Didn't Sark decide to do that with the OL last year and a backfired. Damn if you do and damn if you don't. I understand for those of us watching from the outside it just looks like we are screwed all around.

Even if you agree with him...he pulled more players' scholarships than he ever got into the NFL. His "development" was always a numbers game.

Again, ND has 16 players (so far) in the portal. They were not immune to it.

I’m in that same boat. I was talking to myself there as much as anyone. When he left I was pretty confused because I thought he was a decent player setup for a great 2026. The marketplace did not agree.

Based on what my BYU fan friends say, the Polynesian players go to church service, but they usually live off campus and party and have sex like normal college kids, but know to be careful about not being too obvious about it.

That number 1 recruiting class we got has to be stripped down at this point.

I only hope the staff adjusts to the new realities and allocates time and money appropriately moving forward.

You made me curious...

From our 2025 class, we've lost 4 out of 25 (16%), including Barnes who we are trying to get back. A couple more have been reported to be shaky but are still here as I type (Lockett, McCutcheon)

From our 2024 class, we've lost 12 out of 22 (54%), including a punter I don't even remember. Guys still shaky are Kobe Black, Wardell Mack, and Christian Clark.

2023 is harder to say because those guys have been trickling away for a couple years now and there's actually already a couple guys off to the NFL (Hill, Muhammad). Strictly speaking, we've lost 15 of 25 (60%) of that class. Would've been 16 but we pulled Derek Williams back out of the portal.

I agree. Going forward what incentive does a head coach have giving backups some reps if they are going to use that film to play somewhere else for more money?

Apparently asking for a raise and being told yes is no guarantee of anything, fwiw.

I could have left out the Catholics got it right part, that was tongue in cheek.

I stand by the rest of that, no point in playing a bowl game.

Live in the now, man.

Some kind of parameters need to be put in place for this crap. Maybe out of high school it’s a two year commitment rule. This shit is no fun for anyone but the players and a lot of those are overshooting their shot.

I think you're missing the part of the financial incentive of playing in a bowl game. I'm sure the AD expects that bowl game payout.

I don’t even think it’s fun for most of them really. They’re constantly getting told by unqualified agents and other morons to go into the portal and ask for ridiculous money.

It's never going to happen, not until the government steps in to regulate college sports. This is the closest thing we'll ever see to pure, free market mechanics in our lifetime. You gotta embrace the chaos and accept that we are unwilling participants in one of the most interesting macroeconomic experiments of the modern age. Imagine what it was like to live through the Dutch tulip mania - that's us right now.

Let's be fair, this thread is moving fast and is mostly brutal news for anyone that loves Texas football recruiting.

I'm not blaming anyone for skimming or just going to the most recent page.

That guy has a decades long history of not reading threads, including as recently as not reading his own fucking twitter feed properly and posting "Parody Pete Nakos" as legit news. That was a few days ago. Did you miss it? Because maybe you need to read the thread...

What the fuck.

The roster is so depleted for these bowls it turns into a highly-competitive audition for many of the kids who didn’t get playing time all year. Just because someone like Clark enhances his perceived market-value doesn’t mean it’s a failed exercise.

Didn't see it posted, but Melvin Hills signed with UConn (per Bobby).

Absolutely. The inability to pin a dollar "value" on a player, or a position, or a school plus the source of the funds often being billionaires who have their own skewed perception of that value makes this fascinating from afar, though horrifying up close. Someone mentioned ROI earlier and I can't imagine how you would even begin to calculate that given the wide dispersion of even goals for CFB. Clearly not every donor is under the illusion that they can pay for a championship at their school ... what other value are they getting when Troy Fucking Aikman can't even get a "thanks"?!

Good rebuttal. I wonder if it's possible some of the difference is made up via NIL vs revenue sharing, but wasn't mentioned as the full amount RBGIII heard? I'll interject the oft quoted, "I don't know shit about fuck regarding NIL and revenue sharing" here. Other thought not mentioned earlier, but just having the new coach talk one-on-one with these guys may have made a large diference. By that I mean, other than a large meeting with the players, he might have been too busy to have done so hitherto. The danger of losing players then prompts a direct meeting that alleviates concerns and uncertainty may have been a critical factor.
