There's a new place that is opening on Saturday out west of town. I went and checked it out last night as a soft open and it's great, good cocktails and a great setup with tons of outside fans and seating plus a great stage and sound system. It's being run by the old manager of Independence Brewing's operation and the food was fantastic from tru bar-b-que. He makes the tortillas fresh pressed for the tacos and they are insane.

The web developer and general tech guy didn't include the website? What is this world coming to?

Yeah they just redid all the tap lines and stuff. The company that came and did that had a bunch of beers that came with the job and that's what it was. The dude knows beer, like I said he was at independence brewing for a while.

I’m glad someone said it. I saw that beer list and busted out laughing. I didn’t want to shoot the poor guy down the second he opened but that beer list is ass. He needs to dump those beers now and replace them. Those beers are used to being flushed I’m sure.

You don't want to risk your life on 290 W for that beer selection?

Instead of paying out of pocket to have the tap lines redone, they let the distributor do it in exchange for putting whatever the distributor wanted on tap. In the meantime, the first impression the bar gets online and in person is weak. In a competitive space, that seems penny wise and pound foolish. Feels like a bad area to cheap out on when your trade is selling, checks notes, beer.

I mean it's not even technically open yet, but yeah.

Its all worth it once you finally arrive and can enjoy those refreshing texas summer evenings as the dust swirls around you.

And you relax 50 feet from a highway with a cold Coors Banquet on draft.

I just noticed there is one obvious omission from their initial draft list--Sam Adams.  That would have been the chef's kiss.

Tough crowd in here. The beer list isn’t that bad. Stash is awesome. McConauhaze is good. I like a lot of St. Arnold’s beers so that’s a good rotation to have. Haven’t tried the Meanwhile Dunkel, but I’ve enjoyed other beers from them. You pretty much have to keep a mass produced swills on tap to appease the non craft beer drinkers

Yeah if you can't find something to drink off of that list you're a snob. Not that I really like any of those but there's nothing wrong with a cold draft Pacifico or Modelo. (if - say - you were dragged there for an event or whatever)

Beer snobs will prefer Mercer St. Taproom a bit further west, but still before Nutty Brown HEB.

I wish someone would open a dive in the old Austin Java between Sunset Canyon and Canyonwood.

Looks pretty good. Is that the original Pieous location?

I count 8 Texas "craft" beers.  They advertise as having 16.

I wouldn't have published that beer menu out of the gate if it's going to change and be more representative of actual Texas craft beers.  It's hard to wash off the initial stink.

This thread makes me miss C Hunt's off of burnet. They had good beers and they had shitty beers, but you could get an ice cold bucket of any of them cheap as fuck. I had hopes it would make a comeback after covid, but I guess that wasnt in the plans. Hell, I haven't driven by the lot in a couple of years, so its quite possible there's a condo building there now. I guess its tough to find any spots in town to sell nothing but cheap beer and still be able to make rent and a profit.

heh - buddy of mine owned Rusty Mule.

As I understand it's the same owner, rusty mule was run by a scoundrel who is now being prosecuted?

is it in the middle of a trailer park, or is that some kind of RV storage lot?

It was an RV park for a minute between bars, there's 50A electric run all over the place so it's well lit and fans galore even outside. Also lots of AC power for food trucks.

I think he owned that lot.

God what a great place. From about 1998-2001 I probably spent 30-40 Friday nights a year at that place. I don't want to do the math on what i spent.  I lived with my cousin at the time and his office was 1/2 mile away. And 2 of the waitresses were good friends.

I drank cheap beer, played pool, ate free popcorn, and let Chester tell me dirty jokes. One St. Patrick's Day I convinced one of my waitress friends to let me put a burned CD with a dozen Irish songs in the jukebox. I put in enough money to play all songs twice.  Natives got restless.  About 8 songs in they unplugged it to reset the system. But they didn't take out the CD for at least another year. Every time I came in I'd play 2 songs off the CD.

I've worked in that area since 1986.  Three different companies/locations, all within a mile or so.  I can't possibly imagine how much beer I drank at C Hunt's.  It had a lot of charm for being a dump under a shed roof in an industrial vacant lot.

Yeah, chester definitely owned the property, and I'm guessing its still in his family. The comment was more about how difficult it is to pull off the "we only sell beer, and its always cheap, no food" icehouse approach, at least in Austin proper. There are fancier places with icehouse in the name, but they dont do much for me.

Mid 2000s I spent quite a few hours throwing washers there after work.

That looks like the recommendations you'd get from Helobious if you asked him about great beer.

Arguably the most brutal(and honest) post ever on Surly.

It’s a good broad list for a wide net of beer drinkers.

Maybe that’s just the tap menu, they could have 8 others in either bottles or cans.

Set on a sprawling 5-acre property shaded by live oaks, we offer 16 taps of Texas craft beer, well-made cocktails, and a rotating lineup of food trucks.

I went up there earlier this evening. Place is pretty cool except the beer selection. Was hooking up with a chick I’ve been banging but she was there with her friends and constantly bitching about her loser asshole husband
