Part of me wants them to win 8 or so.  To keep Venables around.  Part of me think it probably does not matter much who coaches them given the move to SEC and their second class status in recruiting given their poverty.

I do think Mateer is a hell of a lot better than the garbage they had last year but not some Heisman contender like OU fans think he will be.  If they run him enough to get Heisman type stats, he likely won't last the season.  As a passer, he is nothing special.  He kind of reminds me of Ehlinger

Imagine what Jackson Arnold might look like playing at a school like Washington State with a Washington State schedule. I picture something similar to Mateer.

This guy is a once in a generation buffoon. He has no idea what he’s doing. Enjoy this.

Au contraire- he was senior director of the Senior Bowl. Do you not realize what that means? Clearly, he is better at senior directing than the senior director of the East West Shrine game or the (one has to laugh) senior director of the Blue Gray Game. He has a well earned reputation for being willing to talk to the professional NFL scouts that come to watch Senior Bowl practices.

I have heard from several in the know Sooners that he is a scouting savant. OU snatched him up before the Kansas City Chiefs could.

At one point last year, Washington State was 9-1. they had defeated Washingon (at Washington) which is beyond huge for them. The had humiliated Texas Tech. Their only loss at that point was a high scoring game at Boise State. After everything they (and their conference) had been through, they were in the mix for the CFB playoffs. With the pressure on, everything on the line, and an historic season hanging in the balance, Arbuckle & Mateer delivered consecutive losses to New Mexico, Oregon State & Wyoming.

Typo - they were 8-1

OK, that's some seriously weird shit. Posted in the VY thread, then never left that thread and posted a multi-quote response there. Hit submit, and the multiquote response was posted in this thread. I've never even seen this thread title, much less opened it up. WTF?

Mateer looks like a poor man’s Sam Ehlinger to me.  That’s the best comp I’ve got.  He’s much better than what they had last year when they had perhaps the worst qb room in the P4.  But that’s not saying much.

They played that game at the Seahawks stadium and split ticket share so it was in Seattle but not nearly the home environment of a normal game of that series historically.   And it’s not like the huskies themselves were world beaters last season.

Here's an article about David Stone having an "awakening" and now really coming on as a DT for the 2025 season. I'll be surprised if he has, but, hey, there's nothing that can be disproven until the ball is kicked. The guy was developing a reputation of having a bad attitude before entering the portal. Nagy was fine letting him go sit and collect money somewhere else, but Venables threw a hissy fit and OU matched Auburn, allegedly. After that, suddenly Stone is just wrecking shit.

David Stone 'fighting' for starting job on Oklahoma defensive line after offseason 'awakening'

NORMAN — No one on Oklahoma's roster knows David Stone as well as Jayden Jackson does.

The two were teammates at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. They both signed as part of Oklahoma's 2024 class, Stone as the five-star jewel of the group and Jackson as a four-star prospect who flew somewhat under the radar by comparison. The two defensive tackles are best friends, roommates and self-described brothers.

So, it's notable that Jackson noticed when something shifted for Stone this offseason.

"I've seen a hungry guy," Jackson said. "He kind of had an awakening moment."

That moment for Stone came on the heels of a freshman season that wasn't quite what he — or many — expected. Stone played in all 13 games as a true freshman last fall, but he didn't start in any of them and only logged 94 defensive snaps (fifth among OU's interior linemen) while registering six total tackles, with two for a loss and one sack, as well as just seven total pressures.

It paled in comparison to the debut season for Jackson, who won a starting job in fall camp and went on to earn Freshman All-America honors while starting 10 games at defensive tackle.

Stone put together a strong spring for Oklahoma, but on April 18 he shocked the college football world when he abruptly entered his name into the transfer portal. It was a short-lived emergency for Oklahoma; following conversations with the Sooners' staff, Stone withdrew his from the portal and reaffirmed his commitment to the program before Easter weekend ended.

Since that whirlwind ordeal, Jackson has seen a different Stone over the last four months. The 6-foot-3, 310-pound sophomore has been in the film room with assistant coach Todd Bates more than the rest of the Sooners' defensive tackles this offseason. His daily practice grades have been "phenomenal," Jackson said, and it switch has seemingly flipped for the former top-10 overall prospect.

"That man right there, probably most improved on the D-tackle group," Jackson said. "He had a huge jump, and the coaches have seen that."

    13231156.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320

Prior to the start of fall camp, while speaking at Oklahoma's annual preseason coaches luncheon, Bates spoke highly of Stone's progress this offseason and predicted a breakout sophomore season for the Del City native. Through 14 preseason practices, Stone has done little to make anyone within the program second-guess that prognostication.

He has taken a no-nonsense approach to the season, not only holding himself accountable but making sure his teammates meet the moment daily as well.

"I can tell he wants it more," senior defensive tackle Damonic Williams said. "After his whole situation and everything like that, he came in here locked in and ready to go. I'm talking about, he's not missing a day. He's not missing a rep, nothing. So, the fact that I saw that growth from him being here as a freshman and him coming here ready to go, (he's) ready to take anybody's job."

That would be quite a feat on a defensive line many are expecting to be among the best in the SEC and possibly the country, especially considering Oklahoma returns both of its regular starters on the interior from last year's defensive line — Williams and Jackson — as well as senior Gracen Halton, who started just three games but played the second-most snaps (402) among the Sooners' defensive tackles, behind only Williams' 416.

As Williams explained prior to the start of preseason practices, Bates doesn't want to have just two starters at defensive tackle — even if only two players can start inside on a given Saturday. While Stone will is positioning himself to be among those four starters, likely to absorb many of the 317 snaps in the rotation that Da'Jon Terry played last season, the former blue-chip recruit is pushing for more this preseason.

"David Stone is, again, he's fighting to be a starter, and he's showing up every day like it matters to him," Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said. "(He) has really taken another big step."

The innate ability and physical traits have always been there for Stone, who has added 15 pounds to his 6-foot-3 frame since his freshman. It's why he was rated as the No. 9 overall player in the 2024 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. But since his weekend foray into the transfer portal back in April, things have started to click more on the mental side of the game for Stone, whom Jackson described as probably the most knowledgeable of Oklahoma's defensive tackles from an X's and O's standpoint this preseason.

Now it's just a matter of putting it all together and carrying his inspired fall camp performance into the regular season, when it matters most, and fulfilling his five-star potential.

"I could tell last year he really wanted it," Williams said. "He really wanted to start, he really wanted to play, everything like that. And seeing that he didn't get exactly what he wanted just then and knowing that he can come back this year and play and start if he truly wants to, if he wants it that bad, and he shows the coaches that he wants it — then I really feel like that lit a fire. He's a whole different guy."

Watching Ikard & Lehman on OU Breakdown right now in the background.  Going through their big training camp questions from a few weeks ago and where things stand now.

- Cornerback - They like the depth but seem concerned about the health of Eli Bowen and Gentry Williams.

- WR - They still cannot identify who there #1 receiver is. They mention a bunch of names without a lot of confidence or excitement.

- Fususi has been practicing with the 1s. He will play a lot this year. He might win LT job over Sexton(who's been hurt). Ikard says that starting 5 is still up in the air, but feels much better than last year at this point. They think they're deep at OL.

- Raving about Mateer's back shoulder throws. Said Mateer and Hawkins both look great.

- They believe true freshman RB Tory Blaylock is gonna be very good and will play this year.

- DL Jayden Jackson looks like the best player on the field at times. They expect David Stone to make a big jump.

- TE Jaren Kanak is gonna have a big role in this offense

I have to confess that I read SoonerScoop. They believe that the 2023 RRS is the baseline for the rivalry, much more so than 2022 or 2024.

That was a game where they played nobody before Texas, worked on tempo and QB draws in practice without ever putting them into a game before Dallas, had the Texas signals stolen, profited from very untimely injuries to Majors and Sanders, and still would have lost had the game been 59 or 61 minutes.

This year, they have to play two important games before Dallas. I expect it to be a game, and sure, Texas could lose, but their hill to climb is a lot taller and steeper.

I have to tell you, the OU WR room is fucking abysmal. Spoilered below is an article from Sooners Illustrated in which they talk to Emmett Jones and he pines for the return of two guys who currently have no timetables for a return - Gibsons Javonnie and Jayden.

Highlights:

-Emmett Jones rated an FCS WR from UAPB as the top guy in the portal, apparently above names like Singleton, Key, Thomas, Barion Brown, Branch, Horton, you name it. No no, it was this Javonnie Gibson guy. Don't blame Jones if the guy doesn't come back soon enough and the WR room sucks again. It's all of those damned injuries again.

-They've come close to simply no longer really discussing Jayden Gibson as a viable option for this season.

-Burks has been both hurt and less athletic this fall camp. They'll still tout him in the media as a wizard who scored 3 tds against Temple and averaged less than 9 yards per catch last season, but they're far less enthusiastic about his output for this coming season.

-I follow OU as closely as anyone and I am having a hard time thinking of names that are actually practicing for them right now at WR. Elijah Thomas and Manny Choice are freshmen getting reps. Some dude named Regan? Sategna is there. It's slim pickings, but no doubt John Mateer will elevate some of these scrubs to All Conference as he marches his way towards the Heisman.

NORMAN — Emmett Jones will look to his left from time to time during practices and see Javonnie Gibson and Jayden Gibson jogging off to the side, and his mind will wander for a moment. In that instance, Jones considers the potential for Oklahoma's wide receiver room once those two are fully cleared to return to the fold.

Javonnie Gibson has been sidelined since early April, when he sustained a broken leg during spring practices. Jayden Gibson has been out much longer, tearing his patellar tendon in his knee last August and then sustaining a setback prior to the start of spring practices. Both have been working their way back since then, though an exact timetable for their returns remains unclear.

"All we got to do is get ourselves in position for when those guys come back and finish this thing the right way so we can position ourselves to play down in Atlanta when it's time to," Jones said Tuesday after Oklahoma's 15th practice of the preseason.

The Sooners' wide receiver room was decimated by injuries last season, as the unit's top five players entering the season missed significant time throughout the year, and in the case of Jayden Gibson, the entire year. Jones worked to retool the position group this offseason, bringing back the likes of Jayden Gibson, Deion Burks and a crop of second-year players while adding five transfers and a couple of true freshmen.

The plan was to reconfigure the position for offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle's system and to withstand the challenge of Oklahoma's daunting SEC schedule. As Jones worked to reshape the room through the transfer portal, he says Javonnie Gibson — a second-team FCS All-American at Arkansas-Pine Bluff last season — was the top player on his board.

"He was the top guy I had on the board because I knew what we needed," Jones said. "I knew where he was from. I knew who coached him. I knew which system he ran. I knew what Arbuckle's going to do here, and I thought it would be an easy transition. Overall, it was just his natural toughness — the upbringing with mom and dad down in the Opelousas (Louisiana) area, just a perfect fit. Like I said, if you think about conference and think about everybody we play in this conference, the schedule we have when it comes to selecting them and guys that are far from divas, and blue-collar guys that are going to battle for you and play the position."

    12992143.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320

Javonnie Gibson fit that mold. A 6-foot-2, 211-pounder from Louisiana, he flew under the radar coming out of high school and wound up at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where he redshirted in 2022 before working his way onto the field the last two seasons. He caught 28 passes for 406 yards and four touchdowns as a redshirt freshman before he broke out last season, catching 70 passes for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns.

Javonnie Gibson was fourth in the FCS in receiving yards, tied for 22nd in receiving touchdowns and 27th in the country in yards per reception (17.36). He also fifth in the FCS in receiving yards per route run (3.21), had six contested catches and an average depth of target (14 yards) that was tied for 21st in the nation.

After arriving at Oklahoma in January, Javonnie Gibson was one of the team's top performers during the spring, living up to the player Jones believed he could be a difference maker in the wide receiver room. He looked the part of a potential No. 1 receiver in the Sooners' offense while developing a strong rapport with quarterback John Mateer.

Then his injury happened late in the spring, and he has been sidelined since, gradually working his way back. He came out of his walking boot this summer, and while he was still rehabbing at the start of fall camp, he has continued to take steps in his progress as he tries to return early in the season.

"That dude, when he comes back, it's going to be trouble for the SEC," cornerback Devon Jordan said.

Jones said it has been a team effort with Brent Venables, Arbuckle, the Sooners' sports medicine and sports science teams when it comes to managing Javonnie Gibson's rehab this offseason. As his position coach, though, Jones said he has treated the Arkansas-Pine Bluff transfer as if he's not injured. That means keeping him actively engaged in meetings and during positional drills, even if he's not an active participant physically, to keep him up to speed.

"He still gets questions in the room," Jones said. "We still call him out in the room. He still has to present. He's still right there with us in the huddle. He's helping the younger guys that are out there on the field at the same time, too, and we're putting him in situations to make sure he's staying up to speed. That's one dude, man, that's just a natural specimen. I can't wait until he comes back with the rest of the guys that we have."

The same has applied to Jayden Gibson, who is "getting more engaged by the week," according to Jones — though just when he will make it back from a significant knee injury and subsequent setback remains to be seen.

Javonnie Gibson, Mateer added, has been among the players staying late after practices for additional walkthroughs to go over new installs — just another step in his preparedness for when he is cleared to return.

"Javonnie's definitely a big piece, and he had a super-impressive spring, as a lot of y'all know," Mateer said. "Everybody's going to be ready, no matter what. He's out, and it sucks…. He'll be ready when he comes back. It's not going to an ease-in process."

He had a heat stroke and they had to take him via ambulance to the hospital. Of course, they’re all saying he’s now perfectly fine. To be clear, I don’t think Wingo even passed out and the dude spent two nights under observation in the hospital and missed a week of practice. Things are handled differently up in Norman though.

They are really believing:

Wow. Deepest defense since 2003 and deepest OL since 2017. The former team played for the BCS championship and the latter played in the CFP.
