Post Season Notes

With the season coming to a close, it’s time for Jim Schlossnagle and his staff to move on and look to the future. Now it’s all about building on this past season and improving for the future.

The NCAA baseball portal window officially opened on June 1st and it will run through July 2nd.

As of Monday afternoon, I am expecting the Horns to lose at least four players to the portal. One of those has already been announced in outfielder Matt Scott. It is worth nothing that Scott was not on the postseason roster.

The other three names will be along those lines as well. Not difference makers at this point in time.

Now that’s not to say more will not enter, but just as of now, that’s what I’m expecting.

--

Texas will be very aggressive in the portal as well.

A plan has been in place for quite some time and they’re looking to upgrade talent and depth at every position, regardless of which players are currently on the roster. The Longhorns have been watching, evaluating and keeping close tabs on difference makers across the nation.

When I say every position, I truly mean EVERY position.

I do think they’ll look at pitching and 2nd/shortstop very closely, however.

--

Obviously Texas has an extremely talented recruiting class coming in that is loaded with top end talent. The big question is how much of that talent they’ll be able to hold onto.

I’m told that the Horns only feel iffy on two prospects at this time: SS Kayson Cunningham (San Antonio Johnson) and 3B Gavin Fien (Great Oak / Temecula, Cal.).

There’s about a 20% chance they hang onto Cunningham, who is considered to be one of the best players in the nation.

Don’t be shocked if the majority ends up on the Forty Acres, however.

It is important to remember (down the road) that some of the commits in this class are from David Pierce’s time at Texas.

--

Many people have asked about Troy Tulowitzki being retained.

“That’s pretty comical,” a source said.

--

On a similar note, I’ve been asked if Texas A&M head coach Michael Earley was let go, would he have ended up at Texas in some capacity.

I can say with certainty that wouldn’t have happened.

Does comical mean it was ridiculous to ask and of course he will be retained or is it comical in that of course there is no way he would be retained?

Not specifically Texas related but Pete Nakos of On3 mentioned in an article about Brian O’Connor that Mississippi State is earmarking about $2 million in revenue sharing and an addition $1.5 million in outside NIL for baseball.

Purely related to this year's performance?  Or did Schloss not want him in the first place?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but originally Earley was coming here to be the hitting coach and then balked under the bright lights. I think the short time frame to build staff, players, and portal, plus those coaches available (?) came into play and Tulo was retained.

Schloss said publicly he wasn’t going to leave his A&M staff out to dry. Not only Earley but also Will Fox (was in an off field role at A&M similar to what Tulo had here in 2023). Both were coming to Texas. So that didn’t really leave a role for Tulo.

Once Earley left to go back and took Fox with him, the fit for Tulo became a lot cleaner.

Schloss also kicked the tires on getting Tulo on his first A&M staff in the summer of 2021 when Tulo was still the volunteer assistant here. They’ve known each other for a while.

Balked under the bright lights?

Dude got paid to go be an SEC HC with a top returning roster, lol.

We likely don’t need much portal action if you believe we develop.

This is such an ridiculously terrible take. You've been trying to sell the idea of this roster being very talented for a while now, despite a ton of evidence to the contrary. This team overachieved this year for its talent level. It's very obvious to see.

There is no way Schloss thinks this roster doesn't need much in the portal. I expect it's just the opposite. We need a big infusion of talent if we want to be competing for titles, and I think that's what we'll see from Schloss this offseason.

It means the source is comical.

No way we get Cunningham but its fun to imagine a Curiel type top of the order bat on a freshman plus defensive shortstop. Scouts are divided on Fein, the guy tore it up during the Summer during select showcases but was on a shit school team this spring and didn't look like a 1st rounder at all. He's stayed in the teens on most mock drafts bc nobody has had the balls to move him down.

I was hoping ARod could cover short next season because that bat would play so well at short. You don't need to be Andrelton Simmons in this league with so many Ks and flyballs. But goddamn he was rough at 2nd

There were several times in that postgame presser last night where Schloss said we need to upgrade the talent level without actually directly saying the current team wasn't good enough.

He referenced it in the question he got asked about HBP (basically said we don't have enough premium fastballs so we have to throw a ton of breaking balls) and again when he made a joke about it seeming like we were holding the bat by the barrel instead of the handle when trying to swing the last few weeks.

What is “very talented?”  I’ve said we’re likely not upper echelon of the SEC.  If we’re top 10 in talent in the SEC, we’re likely top 15 in the country.  Based on recruiting rankings and results, any non-SEC school has an uphill recruiting battle.  We only have 1 year of that so still working through it.

Again, 42 conference wins the past two years.  No other major conference team can say that.  Is that evidence to the contrary?  That includes losing our #1 pitcher each year.   Lost our biggest bat for the majority of conference this year.

And let’s say one of Ole Miss or Auburn or LSU wins it all.  Is that more “a ton of evidence to the contrary” regarding our talent level?  We were what 6-1 against those guys?  Perhaps that terrible, non competitive game against defending champ and their clear #1.  So that leaves Arkansas.  That finished two games behind us.  Clearly all evidence to say we were inferior.

For 2024, Perfect Game says our frosh class was #6.  On a per player basis, that’s 3rd highest.  Only Georgia Tech is non-SEC above us in the top 6 but it took 8 more commits to get there.

In 2023, we were 7th overall.  Only UCLA above us that was non-SEC.  7th in average per player rating, which actually traded 3 teams from the overall rankings.

Just last year Jalin Flores was prep baseballs #83 draft prospect.  That included high school prospects and collegiate guys.  Gasparino was top 50 in his high school class per Perfect Game.  Galvan was the #1 high school Catcher in Texas his senior year.  Borba was reasonably well thought of entering.  Mendoza has now two solid years.  Rodriguez had a very solid frosh year.  As a pure athlete, hard to beat Williams. Add in some good experience and maturity.  The hang up on “talent” in the lineup is Flores and Will just falling apart the last month or so.  And unfortunately, two of our freshmen signees went top 20 in the draft so missed out on them.

But then, I clarified to say pitching regarding the portal.

Rerick.  Reported up to 98 MPH.  A top 60 prospect per Perfect Game.  Top 125 MLB prospect per Baseball America.
Flores Perfect Game top 75.  Volantis roughly top 150.  Navarre too.

That is 4 top 150-ish pitching prospects in one class.  We lost at least 1 to the top 75 picks to  the draft.  I’ll entertain discussion on the other 5-10 teams with more depth there in one class.

So the pitching side, I’d assume you have Volantis, Burns, Flores, Rerick back.  Then a likely good chance that you get Riojas, Harrison, Bing, Whitehead, Grubbs, Saunier, Walker, Navarre (no 152 player), Hamilton (no 295), Howard.  From a group that has the 7th best team ERA in the country.  A good combination of righties and lefties.  Hard throwers and pitchers.  You know what’s missing there?  Incoming freshman.  I’d assume our top flight incoming class has some good ones there.

Now, your little buddy BO&W says there will be no 34 man roster limit so that definitely opens things up.  If that’s accurate, it changes things.  I was operating under the assumption that was the case and that the freshman class would mean not a ton of pitching movement.

I do appreciate the typical, cordial tone of your post.  And let’s not forget the supporting data and analysis that you provided.

-Matt Scott

We basically just have Borba, ARod, Mendoza and I guess Farmer/Williams coming back with any offensive production.
I think we are fine with Borba at 3B (or 1B). I can live with him not being a defensive wizard if he hits .300 with 20 bombs (which he should do with just a little improvement).
Rodriguez and Mendoza are .350 hitters next year and not really sure what to project for Farmer/Williams.  Farmer could take another step and be a .300 hitter with above average defense and a little pop or could totally flop. Does Williams stick with just football or is he going to be a superstar and the next Bo Jackson??
We need to portal at a minimum 1 stud OFer, 1 infielder (preferably a SS) and absolutely have to get a catcher unless our 3 portal pickups are all-Americans, then we can afford to roll with Chamberlain.

As far a pitching, just get another Spencer type Friday/Saturday guy and 1-2 more Ruger/Burns guys and I think we’ll be good. Really think the Wiener-effect helps us with the guys already on the roster.

I thought Tumis showed a modicum of promise last year. I guess he didn't accept the Wiener (pedagogy).

I hate to count on Farmer/Williams as starters next year. Maybe spot starter / replacement in case of injury. Hard to imagine Arod as an indielder (other than 1B) if they felt Borba was a better option at 3rd, even before the injury.

Can all the people behind home plate next year sell or give away their tickets if they are only going to go to two games all season…. Because it looked like the whole section was empty most of the season.

The 2 UTSA guys with best seats in the house last night behind home plate was frustrating.

It has seemed to happen in a lot of the big series/games in recent years. LSU, A&M, etc. Opposing fans with premium seats right behind the plate.

I’m pretty sure there are season ticket holders who haven’t been to a game in years and just cash in a profit selling on seatgeek. They cracked down on that in football a few years ago and need to do the same for baseball.

That’s fine to me because it’s better than a huge amount of those seats being empty which for most games they were.  Ranked weekend series and over half those seats being empty is a bad look.

Was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinnertime we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And Mama hollered out the back door y'all remember to wipe your feet
And then she said I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge
Today Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge…..

Has anyone complained to CDC on Twitter about it? IMO they need to clean house on season ticket holders that are listing on resale sites as well as see who and who isn't getting tickets scanned at the gate. I don't give two shits if you paid for them because if you're missing 90-95% of the season you shouldn't have those seats period. Fuck old people.
