Given that so much occurred yesterday, I think a solid recap by position is in order.

But first the injury updates.

Both Cole Brevard and Nick Brooks went down with injuries during the scrimmage.

Brevard later returned to the scrimmage.

Brooks did not. But was later seen without any ice, crutches, etc., while walking with a slight limp.

Tight end Emaree Winston did not participate in the scrimmage. He injured his shoulder earlier in the week and is expected out for a couple of months.

Wide receiver Emmett Mosley V did not participate in the contact portion of practice but was suited out on sidelines. He is nursing a lower leg injury.

Quarterbacks

- Arch Manning was overwhelmed by the Texas defensive front on the first two drives of the scrimmage. The whole offense was.

Manning finally got things rolling on the third possession, and proceeded to have a workman-like afternoon.

I am told the offense looked better as the scrimmage wore on.

Manning had a couple of completions to both Ryan Wingo and Parker Livingstone that were impressive.

- Trey Owens led the 2s. Not much was said about the redshirt freshman. (And I don’t take that as good or bad.)

- KJ Lacey had one of the superb throws of the day, a touchdown toss to Daylan McCutcheon over Kade Phillips. One onlooker described Lacey’s ability to keep his head up while scrambling as something very rare. Lacey continues to impress.

- Matthew Caldwell performed reasonably well while running with the 4th team offense. He had a couple of passes batted at the line but otherwise operated efficiently and effectively. He was certainly not seeing the level of pressure that Manning and Owens faced.

Running backs

- Welcome back, CJ Baxter! Baxter got the first hand off of the scrimmage. Even though he was stuffed, he continued working with the first unit alongside Tre Wisner. Baxter primarily worked inside and moved the pile in short yardage. But he wasn’t always successful in doing so. Wisner continues to add smart weight to his frame and looked good.

- If there was a revelation of sorts at RB, it’s the scrimmage Christian Clark had with the 2s and 3s. Clark’s ability to start, stop, then redirect is probably the best on the team. If he keeps performing like he did on Saturday, he will have a bigger role on this team than some expect.

Wide receivers

- DeAndre Moore, Wingo and Livingstone were the first three in the game. As mentioned above, both Wingo and Livingstone made good catches downfield. Wingo scored three times on the day. Perhaps the best was a 35-yard play from Manning. Livingstone continues to impress. He is consistent and is finding ways to get open and then making the defense pay.

- McCutcheon had several catches, including the TD on rhythm from Lacey.

- Kaliq Lockett saw action with the 1s late in the scrimmage.

- Michael Terry made a stabbing one-handed grab in 7v7 work prior to the scrimmage.

Tight ends

- Jack Endries and Spencer Shannon were the two starters in the first half of the scrimmage.

- Jordan Washington and Endries started the second half of scrimmage.

- Nick Townsend made a couple of plays in the latter part of scrimmage.

- But Washington was the one who had the biggest impact on the scrimmage with his catch-and-run ability.

Offensive line

- When Brooks went down, Jackson Christian moved to second team right tackle. Brooks had been working exclusively at right tackle during the scrimmage as a back-up to Brandon Baker.

- Nate Kibble was second team right guard.

- The OL was beaten multiple times in the early going of the scrimmage, in both the run and pass games. They played better as the scrimmage wore on.

Defensive line

- Good notes on Colin Simmons, Brad Spence and Ethan Burke. All of them effected the QB at times on Saturday.

- Alex January and Brevard were the two starting DTs in the first half. In the second half, it was Maraad Watson and January.

- January made one of the stops of the day, denying CJ Baxter at the goalline.

- Also heard positive reviews on Travis Shaw.

Linebackers

- Anthony Hill played sparingly. Liona Lefau started alongside him.

- Ty’Anthony Smith had an early sack and showed why Steve Sarkisian has been so high on him.

- In probably the best news at the position, Trey Moore looked good at off-ball linebacker.

Secondary

- Starters were Jelani McDonald and Derrick Williams at safety, Michael Taaffe at nickel and Jaylon Guilbeau and Manny Muhammad at corner.

- Kobe Black was the first corner off the bench and mixed in heavily with the 1s.

- McDonald and Taaffe rotated at nickel. Wardell Mack and Graceson Littleton also saw action there.

- Xavier Filsaime’s name came up. He had a one-on-one stop of Wisner. After a good spring and summer, Filsaime appears to be moving forward in the secondary.

Specialists

- Will Stone did not have a good day. Mason Shipley was better but not perfect.

- Punter Jack Bouwmeester received praise from multiple folks in attendance.

- DeAndre Moore (1st) and Ryan Niblett (2nd) returned punts. Wisner (deep guy) and Niblett returned kicks.

**

Other notes

- Texas apparently held out some players for portions of the second half. Anthony Hill, Colin Simmons, Tre Wisner, Trevor Goosby among them.

- The OL needs to step up over the next couple of weeks.

- The pass rush, as expected, should be a MAJOR, team strength. Not only is Simmons freaky good off the edge, but Spence is speedy and tough. We also know what Anthony Hill, Ethan Burke and Colton Vasek can bring. Add in Ty’Anthony Smith, and it’s a unit that can come at you in so many different ways.

- Not the best day from Arch Manning. But not the worst either.

- Be aware of Christian Clark. He could give the team a real lift. So could Ty’Anthony Smith.

- January, Watson, Shaw and Brevard have asserted themselves into the DT rotation.

Maybe because Bert sucked at it

I mean, he did kick more field goals than any one at Texas ever. He didn't always suck at it. Sarkisian likes to go for it on fourth down.

I don’t have the stat on hand, but he was really accurate up to a certain distance, and then fell off a cliff farther than that

idk why I found this funny but where do I sign up to pay for this crucial information?

Apparently, he didn't drop them all. From a report posted by Getafix earlier:  Getafix post #1527

— Quarterback Trey Owens had a good performance, connecting with Ryan Niblett, Aaron Butler and walk-on Rett Anderson in the passing game. "Owens was sharp with the ball and looked good."

A few more scrimmage notes

Some more scrimmage notes that have trickled in since last night.

* Offense was bland for vast majority of scrimmage. A little jet sweep looks, but not as much pre-snap motion Saturday as Sark has in game plans and in-game

* Offensive line has somethings they need to clean up. Still need to be more physical in the run game consistently  at G-C-G. The source believes defense will likely carry Texas at Ohio State, then the OL and offense will have three games to gel plus the off week headed into the Florida game.

* Defensive speed off snap really sped up Arch first couple of series. Arch slowed down as the scrimmage progressed.

* Not much under center unless in goal line. Had been working on it more in practice setting vs Saturday scrimmage.

* Daniel Cruz had a good day. Quick and strong. A factor in run game from center position. Took second and third reps it appeared.

* KJ Lacey really impressed. Quick release, escapability and makes good reads. The escapability is something that really impressed, and the why is below.

* It’s just feels like everyone on the defensive front can rush the passer at edge and linebacker. It comes in waves. Colin Simmons and Brad Spence top that list.

* Cole Brevard “is massive”. Just a big guy.

* Not mentioned as much, but both Ethan Burke and Colton Vasek showed well.

* Defensive speed off snap throughout the roster is best one source has seen in Sark's time in Austin. "They are coming, and it happens fast"

Almost the entire defense is going to get drafted.  There are 2 first round locks.  Just about every college offense is going to struggle against that.

IT stuff from this morning. Some of this is repetitive or what we've already heard.

Here’s a comprehensive breakdown that puts all the pieces we’ve heard together.

Game Situations

Saturday’s scrimmage featured a mix of move-the-field drills (between the 20’s), red zone lockout periods, and two-minute drill to close the day. As expected, the defense emerged as the clear winner in each period.

During move-the-field situations, the first-team offense faced the second-team defense, while red zone and two-minute drill matched the first-team units head-to-head. In all three cases, the defense maintained the upper hand, largely due to the defensive line.

It wasn’t pure domination, but it was clear.

Quarterback

Quarterbacks were able to find open receivers at times, but inconsistency hurt the offense. Overthrows and an occasional tendency to feel pressure too early and leave the pocket stalled drives. QB’s leaving the pocket early is another positive sign of the defensive line creating consistent pressure.

Arch Manning did make a number of the throws he needed to hit downfield and avoided turnovers, finishing without an interception.

Matt Caldwell looked like a veteran on one sustained drive.

The QB’s were largely up and down.

Running Back

The running backs avoided negative plays, staying ahead of the sticks, but couldn’t break off any long runs. CJ Baxter stood out, showing patience, vision, and the ability to fall forward for extra yards. His timing on stretch plays was particularly effective.

Correction: He was in his knee brace. Our source must have seen him right after his day was done without the knee brace.

It was an okay day for the backs relative to the competition they were facing.

Wide Receiver

Ryan Wingo and Parker Livingstone looked really good, but the best performance relative to expectations probably goes to freshmen Daylan McCutcheon. McCutcheon had a touchdown on an out route thrown by freshman quarterback KJ Lacey.

IT has Livingstone penciled in as a starter. Dark pencil. Almost ripping through the paper. He’s had a good camp.

Emmett Mosley did not participate in the scrimmage.

Tight End

Transfer Jack Endries stood out in scramble drills, working well with his quarterback to find openings. Spencer Shannon has shown noticeable year-over-year improvement and is on track to start in 12 personnel. He caught a pass on an out route and looks like a reliable target in two-minute situations.

Shannon is a starter in 12 personnel. He’s had the offseason he needed after having a good offseason last year.

Freshman Emaree Winston suffered a shoulder injury; the extent is still unknown.

Offensive Line

The offensive line had mixed results, performing well in move-the-field but struggling against the defensive front in the red zone. They ran stretch plays from a variety of looks, with Baxter showing good patience on those runs.

While they are working in more gap schemes than in previous years, they liked OZ on Saturday.

Nick Brooks is expected to miss some time but how much is still yet unknown.

Defensive Line

The defensive line was the most dominant group of the day. Hero Kanu looked strong, and Travis Shaw was immovable in the middle. He also brought the energy. Cole Brevard had a productive day, and though both Shaw and Brevard got banged up, they returned to action.

Colin Simmons was a constant presence in the backfield and would have recorded multiple sacks if the plays had been whistled dead.

Lance Jackson took first-team snaps in certain packages, while Ethan Burke rotated in at defensive end. Trey Moore lined up at Sam linebacker in base formations.

Pete Kwiatkowski ran base a lot. It is the first scrimmage, after all.

“The D-line made things easier for the rest of the defense.”

Linebackers

It was a relatively quiet day for the linebackers, though freshman Ty’Anthony Smith had an interception off a tipped pass. Smith worked a lot with the first-team defense alongside Anthony Hill. Liona Lefau might have a competition on his hands.

Elijah Barnes had a strong open-field tackle on a red zone screen pass.

Moore’s time was largely spent at Sam in base sets.

Secondary

The tip on Smith’s interception came from cornerback Warren Roberson, who “has been balling” according to sources. Derek Williams had a strong red zone tackle on Christian Clark.

Manny Muhammad continued his standout fall with multiple pass breakups. Jelani McDonald received the bulk of the reps at Star, while Graceson Littleton saw limited action. As you know, Michael Taaffe got some looks at Star.

Special Teams

Kicker Mason Shipley missed one attempt but connected on a 35-yard field goal during the two-minute drill. Punter Jack Bouwmeester had another strong showing, though punting was not incorporated into the scrimmage.

Schedule This Week

The Longhorns’ schedule for the coming week:

Monday – 3:00 p.m. practice

Tuesday – Full pads at 6:30 a.m.

Wednesday – Off

Thursday – Half pads at 3:00 p.m.

Friday – Helmets in the morning

Saturday – Another scrimmage

It's Parker Lewis, but close enough.  Lulz.

I would hope they would look at Graceson Littleton as a punt/kickoff return man.

He was spectacular in his high school video.

Gerry is very high on him as a coverage guy, especially on the fade.

Closing speed is tremendous.

Longhorn camp reports sound very similar to Houston Texans camp reports. That’s great news for the defensive side of the ball, but a lot of question marks on the offensive side of the ball.  In both cases, the fan mentality is tempted to chalk up offensive ?’s to “they’re just facing a great DEF every day”.  Maybe…..but maybe there are short-comings.  Preseason is a time for speculation based on secondhand and third hand reports.  Ohio State and the SEC schedule will ultimately tell the truth

A few scrimmage/team notes from Pete Nakos (ON3)

Spoiler

+ As Inside Texas also reported on Saturday, On3 heard some great things about what wide receiver Ryan Wingo put together in the scrimmage.
+ The Longhorns have been happy with what they’ve seen from running back Christian Clark, per sources. He went down in 2024 fall camp with a season-ending Achilles injury, yet he’s back and will be a factor in the ground game for the Longhorns.
+ There is a lot of excitement about what Syracuse defensive line transfer Maraad Watson has done since arriving in Austin this spring.
+ Stanford transfer receiver Emmett Mosley has been limited for Texas in fall camp, but there does not appear to be concern about his availability for Week 1. &nbsp
+ Offensive tackle Nick Brooks limped off the field during Saturday’s scrimmage and needed help to get back to the locker room. This will continue to be a situation to monitor, but he will be fine, per sources.

Ok... I'm not sure DeAndre Moore is that good of a starting WR.

I'll jump on the CTJ bandwagon that McJaggy is likely being hyped up way to much by the $9.95s write-ups and McJaggy's at best a possession WR and likely Texas 5th or 6th best WR for this year.

Hope one of our other young WRs not named "Wingo" really steps up during conference play.  Gotta plan on the Stanford transfer WR and Wingo having big 2025 seasons too.

Replacing 4 starters, one of which includes the all important position of Center, not really sure what else one could expect less than two weeks into fall camp. Aside from mastering the mental aspects of the position, I do wonder if Hutson provides any physical advantage over Jake Majors. He's reportedly 6'5"-308 lbs vs Majors at 6'3"-315 lbs. Of course, those measurements don't quantify strength, quickness off the snap or physical proportionality.

The overall conclusion remains the same though. We won't know until they play some games against real opponents.

If our DL (lots of talent + lots of experience) wasn't dominating our OL (plenty of talent + limited experience) at this point in camp, that would be cause for concern.

It would be nice, however, if they would stop using that talent and experience to break OTs. Save some of that for Aug 30.

Wingo better go off this year or I will be very confused. Has all the tools to be the next great one. Just not more shoe string tackles. OL is not giving me Georgia game feelings at all. Nope not going down that road. Time for flood to get to work and I sure hope he does and brooks is back pronto

We’re being gaslit about Jaggy McJaggerson. It’s pretty obvious if you are actually paying attention and not just biased towards hearing what you want to hear.

This guy is allegedly super fast, right? So the dude is catching the ball downfield, but somehow not scoring? Right. They can’t claim a TD because others will debunk that who were there. But “downfield” could be 5 yards and then exaggerated for all of his fanbois.

Jaggy is so fast that Arch hasn't been able to adjust to his speed and properly lead him with his passes.

Shoe string tackles? Wingo? The guy was a beast to bring down all season. Do you even watch the fucking games? Between his action last year and the practice reports, what possible reason do you have to think Wingo isn’t going to have an awesome year?

im rewatching the Clemson game in spurts today and Wingo broke 2 tackles at a loss on and end around and hoss’d a first down from a 4-5 yard loss.

The WRs and OL are my biggest concerns. We lost tons of production at both and our WR this year simply doesn’t approach the talent we had last year.

Despite having Arch, our offense could take a step back.

Posted

Wingo’s biggest weakness last year was tracking and catching deep balls. He would always get open but would often look lost with the ball in the air. Now that they figured out he was very nearsighted and he got laser surgery, along with having more experience under his belt, I’m very hopeful he will show a lot of improvement in that area. Physically he is a freak. Also I have no doubt that Arch is going to throw a more accurate deep ball than Ewers did.

If Livingstone's practicing with the 1s, then it's taking away valuable practice and chemistry from other potential wr's.  If he's practicing with the 1s, then he's separating himself.  If he's catching the ball, he doesn't have to be a burner, just needs to be reliable, and the beneficiary from Wingo's extra coverage.  If he maxes out, he'll be surpassed before the end of the season, once teams get film on him and can adjust.  I'd be damn happy with a possession receiver that is a 2nd or 3rd read dump off guy.

As tight end's go, who is the better blockers of the group?  That's what we're going to need early on.  Guys that can chip and release or delay the defensive end, and then catch.  Everybody want's to catch the ball, few want to dig in and fight the biggest, quickest guys on the defense for four quarters.
